This morning continues pretty good: the sky is shinily blue, I am wearing my favorite sweater/skirt combo (corded, form-fitting turtleneck of black-gray-pale pink and down to the ground a-line skirt, dark brown with a few thick, roughly patterned black/gray/pale pink stripes). Plus my favorite black boots, and I got complimented on my looks this morning by metro guys :D

I think I am now in that point in my drama cycle, where I madly crave jdrama (just as a few months ago I was in kdrama cycle, and before that twdrama). So a lot of this are rambles about potential candidates.

Anyway. Since this is long, varied, and rather rambly, I am going to cut, to spare the flist.

Various, relating to Japanese entertainment )

And now, about manga )

Other dramas of the world, unite! )

Basara

Mr. Mousie and I spent the last part of the evening watching first four eps of the Legend of Basara (the anime). It's AWESOME.

The story takes place in a future Japan, reduced to a barren desert by a catastrophe at the end of the 21st century. The main character is Sarasa, a girl whose twin brother, Tatara, is prophesied to be the "child of destiny" who will bring back the country's wealth and abundance. When Tatara is killed by the Red King who has sworn to eliminate Tatara, Sarasa pretends to be him in order to keep the downtrodden from losing hope and to achieve revenge on the Red King. Oh, and one day she meets a strong-willed, charming guy named Shuri at the hot springs and they fall in love. What they don't know, they are the person the other has dedicated their life to killing. Shuri is the Red King.

See this AMV:

That reminds me I only read first 6 volumes and must read more. Except I need to refresh myself as it has a really complicated plot.

Why Basara?

1. Complicated plot, politics, and war and alliances.
2. Grim post-apocalyptic world that doesn't feel unrealistic. In fact, in a lot of ways, it's a medieval society that is not glamorized for once.
3. Incredibly strong heroine, who is neither Mary Suish, or prettified, or weak, or anything but herself.
4. The hero, Shuri, who is a complicated, ruthless, intelligent individual, who you end up liking and understanding, even though he has done some really horrible things and not in a 'poor hot woobie of shoujo manga' way.
5. A cast of complicated characters.
6. A totally star-crossed love story.
7. ANGST.

Had a very long day today, saw fjords and other places of unimaginable (almost) beauty but I am brain dead so about it later.

For now: BASARA!!!!!!

I had through volume 6 and finished those on the train. I confess through volume 3 I was rather disgruntled. Is this what the fuss is about? I didnæt like the art style, I mildly liked Sarasa and Ageha and wanted to drown everyone else, Shuri included, which considering he is the male protagonist, is a problem.

But somehow, with volume 4 it all clicked for me and now I love it and want to get more. I still find the artwork rather rough, and wish the story had less fighting and beards. BUT. It's interesting, a lot, and I love Shuri as a character (though would want to stay far away from him) and Sarasa and the two of them together and can't wait until they find out the truth. Yeah, I got proper meta later.

Also, spoiled self for ending of Dog/Wolf and yay. YAY. Awesome. alexandral, you will love it.

That movie, the one where Julia Styles hooks up with the Prince of Denmark is suddenly a lot more amusing when you are watching it in Swedish TV and when you visited the palace in Copenhagen day before yesterday.

Heh.

Also, my newly purchased Basara manga make awesome hotel reading. What, you can't find a towel or your blow dryer isn't as strong as you'd like? At least you aren't captured by enemies in post apocalyptic desert Japan and your significant other isn't actually the enemy you are fighting.

Mmmm...Swedish pastries=best thing ever.

Good night!

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore, I just bought first ten volumes of Basara.

I am feeling better, thanks everybody.

I finally caved and got Little Fairy which is a wuxia/fantasy/fairy-tale Chinese drama about a mortal man falling in love with a goddess who is temporarily banished from heaven. I was dubious as to whether to get it, despite finding Ariel Lin adorable as a button and having nothing against Hu Ge (the male lead, I had no opinion on him as I've never seen him in anything). I am not big on fantasy in dramas, incredible wuxia jumps being about the most I can usually tolerate. However, tricksy [livejournal.com profile] calixa lured me in by promising manpain. Lots of manpain, and torture/slavery/attempted suicide/screams of despair (I take it her family isn't keen on him).

Yay. Let's see how it goes.

Oh and a bunch of scans and vids.

Here are one of my favorite secondary OTPs of Fruits Basket, the hyper-dramatic, crazily oblivious Ayame (think a grown up Tamaki) and Mine, his shop assistant. They run an 'exotic clothes' stoer together. If they have any kids, I bet they will rebel by being stodgy accountants:

Little scene the above scan is from )

I need to find the scans with the semi-hugging.

Here are some Capital Scandal vids. Hats, angst, dancing!

Vids )

And after seeing Partner yesterday, which deserves its own post, as I laughed so hard I almost died, here are some Govinda vids.

Somewhere between volumes 3and 4, the Red River manga went from 'I like' to 'must feverishly mainline more.' I am now on volume 6 and basically bought out every volume (through 17) available in the local Borders.

As I mentioned earlier, RR is a story about a Japanese high school girl, Yuri, who gets catapulted back in time to the land of ancient Hittites. There she gets involved in the politics and wars of the time and also catches the interest of one of the Hittite Princes, Prince Kail (a real historical figure which amuses me to no end).

Why is it so awesome? Unlike the usual shoujo this isn't just 'does the cute boy like me?' No, it's more of 'yeah, the cute general Prince likes me. Now how shall I return back to my time? And how will I survive the Queen who seems to want to have me as a human sacrifice in her black magic rituals so her son could inherit? And how will I be involved in the battle between Hittites and a neighboring empire for dominance? And deal with political backstabbing?'

It's really great. How to explain it? Think Fushigi Yuugi, only if Miaka annoyed you (I adored her but I know some don't care for her) you'll like Yuri as she learns sword-fighting and comes up with clever schemes and rescues herself as often as she yells for Prince Kail to rescue her. Though if Kail is like anyone in FY, he is much more of a Hotohori than a Tamahome. My favorite scene is where he gets himself invited to an enemy town and makes a grand entrance with concubines all over him and an air of an utter idiot :P

I also don't mind the whole 'she is staying in the past' thing as she does want to get back to her time but she can do it at a particular time of the year so she has 10 months to go (Kail promises her to get her back to where she needs to be by accelerating the war. Roses? Candy? Passe. Beating the enemy in 10 months so your OTP can return to the capital and depart back to her world? True Love). Even the usual cliche of 'he wants sex but she isn't so sure' doesn't bug me as it's clearly a cultural thing. He is a guy from 3000+ years back. To him it's pretty simple. They love each other and she's his officil concubine and why not. She is all 'I am a high school student.' Heh. This not being the awful Haou Airen he is all 'blah, this sucks, off for a cold shower' and not 'rapey now.'

Oh, and good news, [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore. Since I fell in love with this despite the artwork, and the artwork is actually very similar to Basara, I decided to get all the Basara volumes out there, now that I know that a good story can overcome my dislike for this particular art style.

I bought a whole bunch of books actuall, manga and non, including Matt Ruff's Sewer, Gas, Electric: Public Works Trilogy, a boo about vampires in Austin called Tantalize, Jasper Fforde's Fourth Bear etc etc and two first volumes of W Juliet.

EEEEEE

Oh, and I stole this MV of Summer x Summer from [livejournal.com profile] autumn_yaar. I think I just added a drama to my currently airing roster back again :)
