Rant on MW rants )

So, I checked out the first ep of the new romcom with Choi Ji Woo and Yoon Sang Hyun, Can't Lose.

I am afraid it's not for me in the least. I am not predisposed to like lawyer dramas or divorce-related dramas in the first place, but it's more than that. The first ep set my teeth on edge - everything is so 'cutesy', so over-the-top, so shrill. Everyone is mugging like expressions are going out of style and the characters make me want to give them prozac (especially the female lead. I also find her unlikeable, but that is a separate issue). The poster pretty much encapsulates the vibe - if the poster appeals to you, you'll probably like the drama.

Granted, I watched it raw and may be missing some amazing dialogue that would put it all in a new light, but I don't think so. I bet it will have its fans - it seems well-made - but this is simply not a genre that appeals to me. It's not that it is a bad drama - it is just of the subtype - the wacky loud romcom - that I almost never go for.

In other news, I got my hands on Laura Kinsale's The Shadow and the Star. I mean, the hero is an English virgin ninja. This is so wtf, I have to read it.

They are (in no order):

My Girl
Delightful Girl Chunhyang
Myung Wol the Spy
Goong
Full House
Coffee Prince
Last Scandal

Marry Me Mary came close but ultimately derailed in a spectacular fashion.

That's seven out of gazillion made and gazillion watched. I am not including kdramas that had romcom elements but were not romcoms - Capital Scandal (period/spy/romcom), Prosecutor Princess (revenge/procedural/romcom), Secret Garden (melodrama more than anything, but with fantasy and, at a stretch, some romcom elements), Pick the Stars (family drama/melodrama with a few romcom elements). No idea if Who Are You is considered a romcom or a hybrid or something else entirely, but it's also on the list. But even if you add in the hybrids, it's still a vanishing number. Funny thing is, I adore twdrama romcoms.

Clearly, chances of this kdrama genre striking gold with me are slimmer than slim. But it still beats office dramas - unless you consider Worlds Within one, the sole one I ever loved was Sapuri, and that's not even a kdrama.

ETA: LOL, I just realized that all seven named have scads and scads of angst. Ah, self, so predictable!

But I just can't seem to get into Protect the Boss mania. Don't get me wrong, it is an enjoyable watch (with the liberal use of ff button, I confess) but I don't love it, don't pine for subs, don't scour the net for spoilers. I feel no urgency to watch it at all and if I found out tomorrow I wouldn't be able to watch another ep ever, I wouldn't care.

I think ultimately it's too light, fluffy, kooky and cartoonish for me. I just don't see any of them as real and realistic people and so I can't seem to get emotionally involved.

I feel left out :(

I was wondering whether the episode count would be cut down to 17 because last week there was only one ep, but apparently not! It's still set for a full 18 eps - they are going to show 17 and 18 back to back!! Mmmmm, yay! I feel sorry for the overworked cast and crew but am selfishly glad I get more of my darling show. (It joins a small and exclusive list of kdramas I loved this year - Secret Garden, Gloria, City Hunter, New Tales of the Gisaeng, Can You Hear My Heart, The Princess' Man).

In other news, netizens prove that they are still their crazy selves because they have been apparently lodging complaints about ep 13 behind cut as spoiled something in ep 13 )

You know, it just occurred to me that MWtS is pretty much a romance novel masquerading as a romcom. No wonder I like it! Btw, my preferred ending would be KW/MW and CR/IA, all in South Korea, all making Hallyu commando babies. (I must be the sole shipper for Ryu and In A left :p).
