I have just discovered that

a. Ady An and Feng Shao Feng starred in a drama together as an OTP
b. It is a period drama set at the turn of 20th century
c. With looooooooots of angst and dramatics and makjang craziness - evil cowives! (only in a period cdrama - it's my biggest hurdle to checking this out, though I have much less problem with it in purely period context than when a modern person travels back into the past and decides to follow that sort of thing a la A Step Into the Past. I may get over it because supposedly he only loves Ady. We'll see), OTP interlopers! attempted murders! scary hairpieces!
d. He's hired to seduce her but falls for her and misery and make-outs follow
e. THERE ARE SUBS

If you know me, this is sort of like a fanfic-type dream come true. (Even cooler than my discovery that Ady played Peter Ho's OTP in a period drama which also starred Blue Lan and which has subs - someone is saving her pennies).

It's called Four Women Conflict and here is a pretty dramatic MV:

Here is another, which is a little less dramatic but still impossibly pretty:

There are both official dvds and youtube-subbed (I think) links available.

I sense an obsession about to start. If I ever finish the rest of my insane backlog that is.

In news of other potentially interesting dramas, I never realized that Vincent Jiao was one of the two protagonists in Wind and Cloud 2. I have a big crush on him. Hmmmm (it also stars Peter Ho, my current obsession, but his haircut in that one is scary so that detracts. Yes, am very shallow).

Disciplining your children a la Kang Xi - is your kid mouthy? Behead him. Is your kid annoying you? Behead him. Didn't finish his milk and won't eat his vegetables? Behead him.

Seriously. WTF!

I am now firmly convinced Four is not the biggest psycho in the palace. I could not wait and am watching ep 10 on viki )

In other news, Four, why are you so pretty?

Yup, he's officially my favorite Yang brother. Especially now the angst has been mostly cured and his issues are under control and he's just very self-contained and competent and awesome.

Also, they keep saying he's the only one who could give Five a run for his money in battle so just like Six, I am madly curious who'd win if they went mano-a-mano.

All the wuxia watching has caught up with me and I am going to bed at this ungodly early hour. But not before leaving you with one last for the night Young Warriors of the Yang Clan post.

I think the reason I love it so much is because it combines the family drama with wuxia/period epic - we have battles and politics but within a family framework with its interpersonal relationships and conflicts. Romantic relationships are important in YWotYC, sure, but in narrative importance and impact they are secondary to the sibling and parental relationships. I especially love it because the Yangs are such a close and functional family - they are not perfect and they have conficts but they are good people genuinely caring for each other. I am by no means a wuxia expert, but a lot of them seem to feature a parentless/lone existence for the hero as his background as a handy shorthand for both his suffering, loneliness and independence (I always think of Yang Guo from ROCH with dead parents and horrible childhood being abused by evil monks). But YWotYC is full of wuxia heroes who are a product of a loving, close, well-adjusted family and function within that paradigm. The closest the drama comes to the loner/outsider background for a Yang is with Four but even there the driving point of his narrative is that he initially had a loving family and how he moves on past his abandonment to become a part of one once again. This family-heroic combo is basically irresistible to me.

Anyway, enough of my blabbering, a few caps from eps 23-24. Mainly Four, but a bit of Six too )

ETA: I lied. Am currently watching ep 24. Oh, I am such an idiot but the scene with Papa Yang and Four when Papa Yang tells him how much he missed him and how guilty he felt made me cry. Papa Yang, ILY. And also, this was something Four desperately needed to hear.

Also have a MV made by the awesome [livejournal.com profile] calixa which showcases how, despite their prowess on the battlefield, the Yang men are utterly hopeless when it comes to wooing.

There are so many reasons why that made me scream. So many. Because this scene of Four forbidding Five from going on a suicidal mission alone and telling him he'll come with is the moment he both claims and accepts his birthright and his place in the family.

Bonus (Four and Papa Yang before the mission above). God, how I love this family.

I have just discovered that Fan Bing Bing and Wallace Huo did a pre-modern drama together called Red Snow where they play a star-crossed OTP - she's a woman married against her will and he's a butler in that household for secret reasons.

The MV looks very pretty:

And there are subs.

I have just bought Four Women Conflict with Ady An and Feng Shao Feng and the Ady An/Peter Ho drama Legend of a Hero so can't afford to buy this for a while. I am going to be patient and see if I can find subs elsewhere.

This cdrama addiction is dangerous.

And speaking of Ady An, have opening credits from Four Women Conflict. Pretty and melo, no?

Yes, I know how this drama ends. Yes, I still bought it. Yes, I plan to binge.
