TOKYO (Reuters) - Buddhist sutras are probably the last thing one expects to hear in a dim, smoky jazz club, but climb the narrow stairs up to Sound Music Bar Chippy in Tokyo's Edogawa Ward on the right night, and it will be Sanskrit, not saxophones, that fill the air.

Dressed in black robes and unceremoniously squeezed between a drum set and piano are Gojun Ichihashi, Shunkou Masuda and Hogen Natori, three Shingon Buddhist monks who come to Chippy once a month to chant sutras and remind patrons that Buddhism can be a part of daily life.

"I wanted a place where people could come after work, have some sake and experience Buddhism," said Natori, who first had the idea for the sutra sessions while listening to jazz at Chippy five years ago.

Buddhist temples, which once served an important role in community networks, have been criticised as only coming into people's lives for funerals and memorial services.

Soaking in the ritualistic harmonies while lounging on Chippy's dark red velvet sofas and downing beers, the mostly middle-aged bar-goers did not disagree.

"I don't go to temples unless someone dies," said Osamu Yamane, 68, who was hearing the monks perform for the first time. He said that, while the singing reminded him of his dead grandfather, he would likely come again.

The monks are currently the only Buddhist act in Tokyo's night clubs, but they invite their colleagues to take up song.

"If everyone did this, Buddhism would be much more popular," said Natori, 48. "Maybe after I turn 60, I'll climb mountains and become a sacred monk. For now, I think leaving the temple and going out to the people is the best way."

You know what I really like? This drama has hilarious OTT moments, but it also (unlike most cracky dramas) has a rather desperate heart: Jia Di is under a horribly crushing burden of her useless family, on the edge of ruin, forgetting to dream. And Huo Da's sweetly earnest attitude to secondary girl, and his fear of rejection, and his conflict with his Dad, also ring true.

How come this only gets better and better?

Meta on ep 4 )

And here is a picspam. Huge. Featuring yummy Rainie/Mike, and bunches of Kingone shots, for [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore

Ep 4 picspam of Mike, Kingone, and Rainie. Who let me near the screencaps? :P )

I thought it would be fun to post 'drama confessions.' Unpopular opinions or oddities that you always thought, pet peeves, etc. Here are mine:

1. Hana Kimi-Japan. So doesn't work for me. Not the worst show ever made, but falls incredibly flat in comparison to the delicious Taiwanese version, which is both funnier and with more heart. I don't mind changes in the storyline from the manga, but they didn't replace it with anything better. OK, maybe I do mind...

2. MatsuJun. Wonderful actor, but seriously, NOT GOOD-LOOKING. He can be hot through intensity and make the character hot, but in abstract? No way.

3. I like Ariel Lin. But she is not the only actress in Taiwan. Why is she in every other drama ever made?

4. And also, what is with little child figures of a number of Taiwanese actresses. I adore Rainie Yang, Ariel Lin and the star of Magicians of Love, but seriously, how about a looking-like-agrown-woman star?

5. Drama clothes. Half the time they make me laugh and the other half to weep. Though I suppose that's not an unpopular opinion.

6. Every wuxia drama ever made could be cut down in half and no one would notice. Yet I still love them.

7. People complain that every Korean drama has a love quadrangle. It's largely true. And I totally love it and want the variations to continue!

8. So much lipgloss!

9. Stop weeping! And weeping. And weeping. And running in the snow! Kdrama hero and heroine, please! It's making me chilly and dehydrated.

10. Sometimes people survive serious illnesses, OK kdrama? Also, sad endings do not necessarily mean good ones.

11. Jdramas, give me proper kisses! Go watch Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake until you learn.

12. Not every older woman wants to hook up with a student or someone junior to her in position and status. Seriously. There some competent, same-age gentlemen out there who would like a gf like that. How about making a drama about it?

13. Visual shorthand of seeing someone not really there to indicate thinking of them is really really REALLY old.

14. Johnny's Entertainment boys, please have a meal! Or a dozen!

15. Korean dramas, would it kill you to be 12 episodes instead of 16+? Most of you would only benefit.

16. Crazy RPShipperers, just because these people co-starred doesn't mean they should be a couple! Writing how you wish they'd hook up, or how they totally are, is insane.

I am watching episode five of Why Why Love and it's official. The OTP of WWL is cuter than ponies.

ETA: Oh, Kingone. Stop making me swoon and breaking my heart. I am fine with you not being with Jia Di, because you are not compatible, but I am heeeeeere to help make you feel better :) Seriusly, Huo Yan is so much more my RL type. Sort of like the better adjusted version of Vic Zhou's character in Silence. And he is also a damn good and patient older brother.

*swoon*

He MUST get a starring role now. Please, TPTB!

ETA2: Rainie bossing Mike and Mike allowing himself to be bossed by her is ADORABLE.

ETA3: Skating down the ramp in your wheelchair, with the girlclutching your neck and umbrella forgotten? Wins.
