Drama pet peeves

I thought it would be fun to post 'drama confessions.' Unpopular opinions or oddities that you always thought, pet peeves, etc. Here are mine:

1. Hana Kimi-Japan. So doesn't work for me. Not the worst show ever made, but falls incredibly flat in comparison to the delicious Taiwanese version, which is both funnier and with more heart. I don't mind changes in the storyline from the manga, but they didn't replace it with anything better. OK, maybe I do mind...

2. MatsuJun. Wonderful actor, but seriously, NOT GOOD-LOOKING. He can be hot through intensity and make the character hot, but in abstract? No way.

3. I like Ariel Lin. But she is not the only actress in Taiwan. Why is she in every other drama ever made?

4. And also, what is with little child figures of a number of Taiwanese actresses. I adore Rainie Yang, Ariel Lin and the star of Magicians of Love, but seriously, how about a looking-like-agrown-woman star?

5. Drama clothes. Half the time they make me laugh and the other half to weep. Though I suppose that's not an unpopular opinion.

6. Every wuxia drama ever made could be cut down in half and no one would notice. Yet I still love them.

7. People complain that every Korean drama has a love quadrangle. It's largely true. And I totally love it and want the variations to continue!

8. So much lipgloss!

9. Stop weeping! And weeping. And weeping. And running in the snow! Kdrama hero and heroine, please! It's making me chilly and dehydrated.

10. Sometimes people survive serious illnesses, OK kdrama? Also, sad endings do not necessarily mean good ones.

11. Jdramas, give me proper kisses! Go watch Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake until you learn.

12. Not every older woman wants to hook up with a student or someone junior to her in position and status. Seriously. There some competent, same-age gentlemen out there who would like a gf like that. How about making a drama about it?

13. Visual shorthand of seeing someone not really there to indicate thinking of them is really really REALLY old.

14. Johnny's Entertainment boys, please have a meal! Or a dozen!

15. Korean dramas, would it kill you to be 12 episodes instead of 16+? Most of you would only benefit.

16. Crazy RPShipperers, just because these people co-starred doesn't mean they should be a couple! Writing how you wish they'd hook up, or how they totally are, is insane.

That is annoying everywhere. Especially the pigheaded people who keep insisting that they have such good chemistry they HAVE to be sleeping together/attracted to each other. When my reaction is:

(1) Most aren't
(2) Even if they are it's none of your business

Jeez, somehow I think these people haven't heard of the tons of real life couples who have terrible/boring chemistry on screen.

See, I don't care for RPFic, but as long as people know it's just fantasy, whatever, do your thing, it's not harming anyone.

But when you are beginning to believe it should/must/is happening? Insane. And drama fandoms are SWARMING with people like that.

It doesn't help matters that some costars in dramas do hook up (Taiwanese stars Vic Zhou and Barbie Hsu are a couple, so are Korean ones Lee Dong Gun and Han Ji Hye) so the crazies get all agog every time people are cast.

Twdrama people, why so desperate for hot male leads you're fully willing to hire foreigners whose Chinese skills are more or less lacking? Can't you just put your own existing hot guys on a more grueling schedule? We won't mind if Vic Zhou did 3 dramas a year.

1. See, I liked the TW version, but when I go back and rewatch (and after watching Ella in another show?) I've decided that if I had to do a comparison? Absolutely hate it. But we have pretty different sensibilities about drama kinks and stuff, so that's not a surprise. The Jdrama is just sparkling summer fun to me, and I know there's weaknesses to it, but the stuff (IMO) it gets right? So makes up for it. Funniness and heart is relative, but I also just think the majority of the time, the acting is better in the J-version than the TW adaptation.

2. I love him. *G*. Through all the horrible hair and odd dentistry in his chibi days, I think he's prettier now. Though he needs to stay away from hair extensions. FOR REALS.

1. i cant make any opinion yet since i've only seen ep 1. and havent even finished taiwan version! :(

2. i think thats why i fell out of liking matsujun. his..appeal to me wore off a bit already. and its probably because i think the same way as you do now (dont kill me Arashi fangirls).

11. half of the time i get frustrated with jdramas because i react badly on kissing scenes its too chaste! i mean, come on! i dont know though if they tone it down because they (producers/directors of jdramas) have to....

1. Haven't seen past the 1st episode yet but I have my doubts how much I'll care for it. Taiwanese version nailed it so well.

2. MatsuJun grew on me. I don't think he's a hottie w/a body but I'm so attached to his characters from KWP & HYD that i love him now. Guess I can't be objective.

5. AMEN! I think I've mentioned this before but there was this episode of Slow Dance & I swear the girl's shirt had a lacy bra sewn to the outside. O_O

1. Exactly. Generally, I prefer Taiwanese adaptations to Japanese ones (probably because I love TWdramas more than Jdramas in general) and HK was one of the best.

They are always such disappointments. (With the exception of Pride)

Kisses in God Give Me More Time were incredible (and plentiful) and the Pride kiss was amazing, but other than that, yeah...I can't think of any other ones!

1. didn't watch the tw version, didn't read the manga, find the j-version so so. Hasn't followed up on the promise of the 1st ep, I am only watching it for shun.

2. I don't even think he's a good actor. But he's certainly a strong personality.

5. I like fashion. Even when it's silly.

11. I keep thinking there are sensual moments that make up for the bad kisses. But even those are few and far between.

12. I dunno what the older woman younger guy thing is all about, but it definitely expresses something integral to j-culture. Kind of like all those tv shows of mom-less families in the US. I guess the
being attracted to an unsuitable guy" is the drama. Or maybe it's some kind of PSA to get the birthrate up.

14. heyyy, not just je--shota's pretty frail too. it's part of the reason I like oguri shun. he grew up and filled out.

I don't know if I have any dorama pet peeves. I have this personality quirk where I like repetitiveness in genre. but if I think of any I'll let you know.

Exactly. He is the only one of the younger guys where he doesn't look like he is malnourished. I keep thinking that Sano must be eating all the other guys' lunches in HK :)

2. Yup. He can be cool, hot, adorable, whatever, but he's only "nice" looking. Which makes the Kindaichi end credits bizarrely addictively...in a WTF? way...

12. But then there wouldn't be half as many roles for the JE boys(the reversal in that is a huge chunk of Gokusen's popularity, IMO...because she ISN'T interested-yet-because such a thing would never occur to her.)

13. Hmm...I haven't seen much of this...that, or I'm thinking of something else...

14. Yeah...this is why I can't remotely cruch on any of them. i'm 5'1" and overweight and could squash them...

This is why I like the cdrama and some kdrama ones, and Oguri Shun and Abe Hiroshi...people I'd be more worried about crushing me than my crushing them.

One day, I will watch a drama where:
1) Ady An gets the guy.
2) Ady An lives.
3) The guy lives.
4) It doesn't suck.

I had hoped I had found this combination in Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain, but not only does the trailer bore me to tears, but I can't find anyone with a single nice thing to say about it(I was actually looking into it at the same as SSWRB, and with SSWRB it was all "SSWRB is one of the best adaptations in years even if it's not perfect" and FFoSM was all "OMG this sucks, it's horrible, I feel so bad for this actress why can't x performer get a more deserving role?")

The Legend of Hero with Peter Ho (not to be confused with Fan Bing Bing's The Legend and the Hero) sounds promising, but I don't know if they both live through it, yet...

1. so agree on hana kimi, i pretty disappointed in it. not a good build up on the story as it so random. Not only that but the main story bore me so much, i rather watch the side story.
2. I kind disagree with this. Matsujun look more and more handsome as I look at him. NOt the convention blow in your face kind of handsome. But the more you look at him, the more he become better until... When he act, I can't take my eyes off him. He a very great actor.

i stop watching kdrama because of the same quadrapole storyline. Kind of boring. I like Ariel Lin better than Rainie yang as i think she act so much better and not tried to be cute. I currently love jdrama right now. kinds of agree on the kissing part. If it a love story, throw me bone here. I don't expect full blow kisses but give me some.

2. I agree with you about Matsujun being a good actor, which definitely adds to his charisma, but I have to say, even when he's basically emaciated, I think he is really really hot. I guess I can't separate the way he acts from his purely physical appearance? Gokusen!MJ and HYD2!MJ especially nice looking IMO. *flaildie*

As for mine... well, I might make a post about it, now that I've started thinking about it.

1. Chef Dramas: I just am just so not interested. Not at all. They don't need drama, they have food.

2. Korean family hierarchy. I have seriously had my fill of controlling grandmothers, heartless fathers and manipulative mothers with their hearts set on arranged marriages for their kids. Is this actually happening over there? Maybe it's just because I can't relate that I find it tedious and overdone?

MatsuJun was hot in Gokusen and Hanadan2, but still...IMO he was hot and not good-looking. But ehhhh, doesn't matter as long as he is still so intense.

Strangely I have to admit Hana Kimi Iikemen Paradise grew on me .. but I don't see it as an adaption of the manga but an alternate universe, with this mindset I can live with it :)

Additional pet peeves for me would be:
17. I hate the whole JE concept. I'd boycott the whole shebang if not for such talented men such as Kimura Takuya, Katori Shingo, Okada Jun'chi, Yamashita Tomahisa and Ikuta Toma.

18. The battles of subbing groups lately. If a one-(wo)man show is subbing and timing quicker AND churns out better English subs, then all hail to that person. I really am disgusted by some so-called established subbing groups who show off their hybris lately. Just because you have been subbing various dramas lately, it doesn't mean you have dibs on anything that takes your fancy and start bitching if someone else is subbing too.

Oh, I agree. JE is beyond creepy and disturbing.

Re: sub groups. I missed that but yikes, that's horrible. People should sub what and how they want! I always go for the quickest, even if once it's complete, I'll delete and redl the highest quality.

Yup ... but not so according to the allmighty fansubbing groups ... e.g. there is still the last ep of a dorama everyone is waiting for and although someone else has already translated it and all, according to the subbers (probably buying more time to get their release out first) these subs should not be made public, as they are not their own. They demanded of the person to retract their subs AND start to translate eps 1 to 10 first. It is ridiculous.

I've seen stuff on soompi that is not d-addicts (people there are releasing subs for Dog/Wolf which aren't official but way faster). No idea if subbers would come to soompi to fight though. Ugh, these people are being way unreasonable, as I remember four separate subs for Hanadan2 and nobody died!

I really think that drama makers are the kindest people in the world and are ctively employing blind people as their designers as a make work project. That's the only explanation I can come up with.

OMG...yess!!
1. Sorry HK Jap! I love Nakatsu and Kayashima(ghost boy) but besides that...PASS! I'm really annoyed that great dramas like Coffee Prince and Time between dog and wolf(up to episode 7!!) are being neglected because of fanservicey dramas like Hana Kimi...please...go for something with more substance than 50 naked boys!!

2.OMG YEH?!! I mean...he is great in Hana Yori Dango...but ewww! If I saw him on the street and stuff I wouldn't think he was hot!

I won't do 3-9 because it's basically what I think(though yet to watch Wuxia)

11. Jdramas your kisses are pathetic at best. The best kiss IMO was from ProDai and that wasn't even because of the actual kiss but rather because it was unexpected and cute and OMG!...I will stop or I'll start ranting^_^

12. OMG YEH! MNIKSS made me a little uncomfortable(Eventhough the OTP rocked) because KSA is 8 years older than Hyun Bin...and all these dramas like Forbidden Love, Anego, Kimi wa Petto...umm isn't there an older guy who they'll like. I mean personally I would NEVER date a younger guy...no matter how old...and wouldn't you want a mature guy...not someone who resembles your younger brother?!

14. A dozen?! Lol...I think Kame alone needs twenty to actually make him visible^_^ They are all so cute...but I really dislike the 'underfed' look...I prefer Korean mean in terms of looks...they look more manly and actually fed:P

15. Yesss! I know wuxia dramas are long...but some Kdramas make me go ugggh! And that's why I prefer jap dramas in length...short and sweet

16. Yeh, totally true...YEH and Gong Yoo are not sleeping together just because they star in a drama...ok yeh...It would be cute if they got together and I'd be happy...but seriously! Just because you act in a dorama doesn't automatically mean your going out

21. Why does every japanese guy look like a girl?! Sorry...but not all of us are lesbians...I'd like to see some more 'manly' looking guys...you know...so I won't feel guilty perving on them
