Four episodes in, and the OTP has progressed to investigating murders together.

While holding hands and walking in-step. Crime-fighting FTW!

Also, it has just occurred to me that Chae Rim is supposed to be successfully masquerading as a man. Despite the bust and makeup. Ahahahahhahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!

It makes me think of Damo where I didn't even get she was cross-dressing and everyone thought she was a man, and was puzzled for eps and eps. Poor Si Lang, vision problems must be horrid!

Also, have a MV:

I put Alec Su's and Chae Rim's Warriors of Yang Clan aside after two eps, even though I loved it, because I was in cdrama overload at the time and because I couldn't find any subbed eps past ep 25 and this is a 36-ep drama. But the overload is gone and I found eps 26-36 on youtube (to download though keepvid. Though if anyone else knows anywhere else I can get it, please let me know) so on with the show!

And am now, on ep 3, wondering why on earth I ever stopped! This is an OTP designed for Mousie's heart expressly because basically they flirt through battling each other with swords and spears!

Seriously, you cannot tell me this isn't foreplay. Just look at them:

And this is how they look AFTER the fight.

For those who have no idea, btw, Warriors is pretty much a love story between Yang Si Lang, a member of a legendary fighting dynasty and possibly the unluckiest Yang brother ever (and that's quite a competition) and Pan Yu Yan, the rebellious daughter of the super-evil Prime Minister, who has it in for the Yangs. So yes, their families are sworn enemies ON TOP of the fact that he's the famous Fourth Brother who, as per legend, gets captured in battle against evil enemies who killed his family and gets amnesia, forgets who he is, gets a new identity and joins them. Can you say AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANGST!!!! At least this one has a sort-of happy ending, unlike the misery fest that was Young Warriors, from which I am still scarred.

Anyway, enjoy the cuteness, OTP. The angst monster will come for you soon enough. It's funny, because normally I find Alec Su as attractive as a piece of toast, but he's RAWR here, with the long hair and the Yang family name, and the sword/spear/every-other-weapon-known-to-man skills. And Chae Rim usually is blandly OK with me but here I adore her.

Because I am an obsessive individual (this livejournal is a years-long testament to that fact), the very fact that I am in the middle of and loving Young Warriors of the Yang Clan ensured I'll check out Warriors of the Yang Clan, the other drama take on Yang story that is available with subs and which stars Alec Su and Chae Rim. I have just finished the first few eps of the latter.

Short verdict so you can know if you want to read on - I like both but prefer YWotYC (I am going to refer to them as Young Warriors and Warriors, for my own sanity).

Both dramas deal with the same basic legend - the Yangs are a family of tragic, famous Song dynasty warriors who get betrayed and killed in battle except for Sixth Brother, who avenges his family, Fifth Brother who becomes a monk, and Fourth Brother who gets captured by the enemy and, losing his memory, joins them.

This said, naming the Alec Su version "Warriors of the Yang Clan" is a bit of a misnomer. Unlike Young Warriors, which is a sprawling family epic, with equal focus given to Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh brothers, their OTPs and their parents, Warriors is strictly about Yang Silang - the tragic Fourth Brother - and his doomed love affair with the evil Prime Minister's daughter. The drama isn't really hiding it - when you look up the stars it's always Alec Su and Chae Rim, as opposed to Young Warriors which lists a long list. I suppose the title "One Sexy, Angsty Yang Warrior With The World's Worst Luck" was too long.

This is both Warriors' strength and weakness. If you are looking for an epic, tragic romance with an awesome OTP (their first meeting is a battle!)

Then this is probably much more your bag than Young Warriors which, while it does have romance, is basically a period family drama wrapped in an epic wrapper.

OTOH, I like that Young Warriors has politics, I love that the backbone of the character interactions and relationships are complicated family bonds. I love that it showcases many different characters and their OTPs and not just focuses on one. Because it's an ensemble piece, Young Warriors has an overall stronger cast - in Warriors, everyone outside of Four and his OTP basically fades into the background. Compare it to Weng Jia Ming , Amy Chan, Yuan Hong, Hu Ge, Eddie Peng, Chen Long, Peter Ho, Liu Shi Shi, Lee Jia, etc. There is no comparison. The latter is a hell of star-studded and powerful cast. Overall, I would compare the two to a period epic novel vs. a period romance novel. Whichever one you prefer will depend on your mood.

A special note on Alec Su. I have never found him particularly attractive before. He looks too boyish for my tastes. When it comes to him vs. Peter Ho who played Four in Young Warriors, I am basically the anti-[livejournal.com profile] ockoala - I swoon for the latter and can't be bothered to give the former the time of day.

Until Warriors. Umm, this is embarassing but I literally yelled at the screen at the above point "I want to do him!" Ahem. Clearly, give a man a Song dynasty hairdo and a spear, bloody him up and imbue him with deadly warrior skills and a bucketload of angst, and I am a goner.

First, to cheer self up after angst in ep 21 of Young Warriors of the Yang Clan, here are almost exclusively happy caps from eps 19/20/21 )

And speaking of Yang brothers, since I am the type of person who likes to retread things until they are dead and skeletal, I plan to check out Warriors of the Yang Clan (not to be confused with YWotYC), the twdrama starring Alec Su and Chae Rim and focusing almost exclusively on Four and his OTP, who in this version is Minister Pan's daughter (!!!!). I was browsing youtube for clips to get a better feel and found this. brb, loling (and swooning just a bit) forever.

I guess the importation of Chae Rim meant they simply had to have the infamous 'kdrama shower scene' or as close as they could get to it in a period cdrama. My interest = peaked. LOL. Though I have to admit Alec Su is very "neutral" for me - I don't find him sexy but I don't find him unattractive either. So it will all depend on how I like his character. Seeing his tendency to take baths with ladies nearby, I'll probably like him a lot :P

last but not least, finall found the gorgeous ending theme for Jade Palace Lock Heart. So good! Both the song and the clips they picked.

Thanks to his careful hoarding and care, Four's emo lake has by now become emo sea. Loved when Lady Doctor told him he needs a shrink because he clearly needs a whole team of them, the snarly angry woobie. His mom has a lot more patience with him than I would if that was my kid - love your family or hate them, either one is fine, but make up your mind and stop wallowing! Yes, yes, major trauma etc - go hit something and feel better, stop snarling at your family for abandoning you in childhood. Yes, they did, but nothing you can do about that now and it wasn't on purpose. Of course, now his family found out who he is, so he's never ever escaping them. Heh.

Also, by period cdrama standards, that counts as X-rated nudity, probably?

Man, his OTP is not only gorgeous and sane, she's also perhaps the handiest OTP for any Yang to have, seeing that she comes with her own medicine kit and knows how to treat sword wounds.

I am not sure how acupuncture cures poisonous sword wounds he got from saving his father's life (awwww! conflicted woobie!) but apparently it works as he's shortly back to consciousness and some fun lashing out and self-loathing. (Has Sorrows of Young Werther been translated into Chinese? Because I bet it would be his favorite book, except that it was written after this story takes place).

In other news, I am definitely seeking out the Alec Su/Chae Rim version of the Yang legend after this because apparently that one is all Four, all the time, and as this is my favorite part of this drama so far, the thought of an entire drama of this makes me giddy with glee.

Have a MV from the Alec Su/Chae Rim version:

Yes, yes, I know I am shipping Four and his OTP. Yes, I know what that means - it means the usual "cdrama shipping = punching self in the face" angsty screaming from yours truly is coming down the line. I just never learn, do I?
