We just watched The Illusionist and run, don't walk to see it. It's my favorite HW movie this year, so far.

It's clever and fascinating and drags you in and the acting is amazingly spot on (Edward Norton has the SEXIEST voice btw). The cinematography is gorgeous and what the movie gets spot on is the look for both people (none of which look like 21st century people transposed into period costumes. E.g. Jessica Biel looks like old photographs) and places: the feel of the movie is sepia-toned and Victorianly-right.

Go. Watch it.

Also, I am now going to imagine Norton as the protagonist of Carter Beats the Devil, one of my fave books.

I heard of it a few months ago(some actor I was curious about at the time is in it...dunno who...) but can't recall what it's called.

I shall see if I can find info.

Oooh, so glad to hear good things of it. I almost saw it last night, but we were just a little too late to the theater and saw Little Miss Sunshine instead, which was "good" but not Edward Norton in costumes and magicking good!! I seriously love Ed Norton. Unfortunately every time I see "illusionist" I get "The Final Countdown" in my head. Which would be Arrested Development and completely unrelated to movie.

What's Carter Beats the Devil about?

Yeah, it's wonderful.

CBtD is a novel I read on my honeymoon (and it still managed to keep my interest!) about a fictional turn of the century illusionist, Charles Carter. I adore that book.

Cool! I thought the ads for that one looked good.

The ads for "Black Dahlia" and...the one about the death of the first actor who played Superman look intriguing too.

Yeah, I really recommend.

And agree on Black Dahlia and Hollywoodland (the Superman thing) do look excellent!

I'll second that

God, you're not kidding about "running" to the theatre! It's only playing in 3 places in LA and even though we were an hour early to the Arclight the 8 pm show was sold. out.
So desperate were we to see that film that we killed time until the next show...it was worth it. I haven't been that staisfied with a movie in a long, long time. Score, screenplay, acting most of all--lovely!

I know, it was perfect. I knew I was going to love it from the opening shots and that feeling held up until closing credits. And people applauded at the end.

We saw it at a showing that was going to let out after midnight on Sunday (thus metro is closed etc etc) and the theater was very full!

All these Edward Norton films NOT getting Finnish releases gets no love from me. I mean, sure we get Devil Wears Prada but any films I might actually want to see? Naw, wait until DVD, if even that.

Might probably have to check this one out illegally. Edward Norton is just that great and he had a little pause and I missed him then.

Yeah, it really is worth checking out, even through 'unusual' means :)
