OK, I am kinda tech illiterate. However, the only way I can get DVDs of certain doramas with subs is to dl them and then burn them. However, I have no idea about how to do that (heck, I am kinda unclear on how to dl anyway but I'll figure it out). Do I need software installed? What kind? Heeeeeelp (in case anyone is wondering, I really want to watch Tokyo Juliet, Love Scar etc).

Alternatively, I guess I can ask some kind soul to dl and burn them for me and I could pay them for it, but I don't think I'd have much luck (and I have about four of five doramas I can only get that way, that's a lot of burning :P)

I am massively tech illiterate but downloading is simple if you have a fast connection. And there are lots of free programmes out there or ones that you can use on a trial basis. Nero is one of the trial ones which seems to be easy (I've used it but I also have one that came with the computer so I don't use it a lot).

Maybe you have something on your computer at the moment? Roxio? Or something like that?

We are getting our house connection upgraded next week (as I don't want to dl on work comp) which is why I decided I might be able to burn. I have no idea about those programs. Are they for dl or burning? I guess I can scour the comp and see...

Thanks!

Nero and Roxio are for burning. I am not sure what you will need for dloading these things - are they bittorrent? - in which case you'll need that (it's handily available on www.bittorrent.com).

Do you have any dvd tools on your computer at all? If not, your best bet is just to do a google search for open source/free dvd burning software. Just be sure that it isn't loaded with spyware by looking it up on a few forums and seeing what people have to say about it.

I have no idea what they are. I think it depends on the dorama. It's kinda annoying because these things (at least with subs) are even more obscure than Bollywood and anime so it's a real pain to have to do all this. I'd gladly pay someone a handsome amount to do it for me and just send me the burned copies, but alas, even by browsing ebay I can't find that many of those.

Why don't you email me the links that you've found for them and I will look and see what they are? My email is lesbiassparrow at yahoo.com.

I watch everything on my laptop, played off a couple commodious external hard drives. But you can download and burn to disc using the software mentioned above or Sonic is another one. See what program is on your computer already. If you have a DVD burner on your machine, you likely have a software that will burn, or you can get one if not.

If you use [livejournal.com profile] jdramas, you don't need anything but a fast connection - and everything there is either hard or soft subbed in English by requirement. Check their tags to see if they have what you want. Otherwise, you can always request a particular drama and someone might just upload for you. Read their rules, definitely. I highly recommend using the YSI download manager, which I believe you can download off the comm, and if not, I'll send it to you. There are tutorials there on how to do just about everything, and if you want to download via torrent the megafaq at d-addicts answers just about any other question you could have about everything involved with acquiring and watching dramas.

It's not that hard, but if you're serious about it, there are definitely some things involved. I have high speed and I have a download schedule of stuff that I'm acquiring that I do every day, usually twice or more a day. Once I load up my YSI manager with 600-700MB worth of download, which depending on the size of the episodes can be 1-2-3 episodes, I just leave it alone until it's done.

Maybe some kind soul will download for you, but I know I have enough stuff to do every day and my connection is often eaten up by both my own uploads and downloads that I'd never have time or bandwidth to do more than I'm doing already.

Being a fan of asian doramas definitely required that I research and learn a few new tech things, but for me, it has absolutely been worth it. Good luck!

Thanks for all the info. It's really really useful. I think I just got a bit frustrated last night that it was so complicated, because this is by far the most obscure thing I've ever liked :)

i'm not much of a techie ( i love gadgets but i dont have the patience of learning everything about it though), but one thing i dont like is torrents. torrent files make me cry, and it makes my laptop go sick big time.

so yeah, its so much easier when there are direct links using YSI, Sendspace, megaupload.

as for burning, some files are in .avi format, so it still needs to be converted to a format that makes it play off the regular dvd player. i just dont know what the name is.

some help i am. LOL.

but i'm sure theres a kind soul that knows that....;) if not, i'll try to find out from Je, she's such a tech geek (well she is, she is a part of the subbing team in some dorama forums! LOL)

Hi, there are various sites out there with detailed step-by-step tutorials for converting .AVI files to MPEG2-DVD - doom9.org (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm) has guides to all sorts of converting/burning/adding subtitles etc, videohelp.com (http://www.videohelp.com/guides) also has detailed guides on how to convert and burn to DVD using both freeware (like AVI2DVD) and paid software like Nero.

Do you mean burn them and being able to play them on your dvd player as a regular dvd? or just burning them to store them as data?

I have a super cheap dvd player (it cost me 45€) that plays most video formats (like mpeg, avis, xvid, divx) so I just have to burn a dvd with the files and them pop it in the player... and press the "play" button. Also if they videos don't have the subtitle embedded and it's another file, my dvd also allows to select the subtitle file and then the video and it displays the subitiles!

Burning to play them on DVD player. I am not too fond of watching on my comp.

Thanks!

Oh! I know how to do that as well! :)

First you have to convert the files in a VCD mpeg format (or SVCD mpeg2 format, or DVD mpeg format, but I prever the vcd mpeg format because it's size is smaller and still looks okay on my tv). To do that I use a program called Canopus ProCoder, which is farily easy to use.
Then when the files are in the right format, I make the dvd with a program called DVD-lab PRO, which allows to make a sort of menu and stuff. This program generates the dvd files than then I burn using Nero. :)
