Byung Hee had a kind of otherworldly beauty to him, a strange beauty that went with his manic energy. But I chose Do il as prettiest because he's just plain gorgeous. I get giddy everytime he does one of his "i'm too cool for this" hair flips. Even though the one I have impossibly filthy thoughts about like the most is Ji Hyuk. If only I had a Ji hyuk living next door. mmmm. I ship Soo ah/Ji hyuk like burning now but its a good thing Byung Hee died because in the first two eps my OTP was Ji hyuk/Byung hee. and if he had stayed alive I would have really been torn on who to ship with Ji Hyuk. and would have more than likely wished Su Ah would move to Jeju Island. Looking forward to Ye Rim and Ice prince. Could turn out interesting. I guess Ha jin and Kyung Jong dont need love interests because they are clearly each other's love interest. (I want flower boy band icons SO BADLY but i cant find them anywhere)
I am SOOOOOOOO watching this. I hadn't watched a Kdrama since Tree with Deep Roots ended. Couldn't get into any of them. Then, this came along... It owns me. I'm already eagerly awaiting the DVD release.
So many cute boys.
A cool heroine. Thank god, she's not a moron.
I do wish Woo Kyung would disappear into some hole in the earth.
And Hyun Soo and Ye Rim. Right on. (Can't believe Ye Rim is only 20 though.) TLC all the way for the angry puppy.
I love this show! Ji Hyuk's my favorite, but it's almost a three-way tie with Byung Hee and Hyun Soo. I miss Byung Hee so much! Such a fun, brilliant character. And Hyun Soo totally won me over with his anger, determination and role as caretaker to his moppet sister. But of course, Ji Hyuk is completely endearing and I pretty much just want to watch him at every moment. Actually, I feel that way about all the band members -- I love them all and just want more and more. Like, what's the story behind Ha Jin and Kyung Jong? How did things get so bad that Do Il basically lives at the pool hall to avoid his gangster father? What was behind the comment that the rest of the band is basically there because of Byung Hee, Ji Hyuk and Do Il?
It's so nice to have a kdrama to love again. And it's awesome the way the characters change and grow. I love that the OTP is embarking on their romance officially as of episode six just because they both like each other -- and the kisses looked natural and heartfelt! When you contrast it to the way kdramas normally drag this stuff out way way too much, it's super-refreshing to just watch a good romance develop. Although honestly, it's all about the bromance for me here. It's really great to just love spending time with these characters.
Ji Hyuk is my favorite - he is so good and unostentatious about it and clearly doesn't think he has much worth - but I love all of them. I agree, I miss Byung Hee - he really was not like any other kdrama character out there. And I started out paying no attention to Hyun Soo but I love him now - it's the combo of anger and guts with the fact that he actually seems to be the principal caretaker to his moppet sister and a really good, uncomplaining one at that.
Yes, this is a rare drama where I think any of the boys could be the main character - they are all so interesting and magnetic. And I like that their backgrounds are there because they form who they are but it's never front and center the way it would be in makjang - we know Ji Hyuk seems to come from a very dysfunctional family that has some money (who don't seem to care he lives by himself while still in high school but just want him to sign over his inheritance rights. Also, JH is so very level-headed, how bad must have things been for him to leave?), that Do Il's father is a gangster and Do Il pretty much doesn't live at home (and I think his quiet and collected demeanor is probably reaction to his father's likely opposite), that Hyun Soo's parents are in the entertainment business as pretty much people to kick around (no wonder he has so much anger bottled inside him) and he's the one who's raising his sister, but we don't really get more than dribbles. It gives the drama its delicate, real, understated tone but it also leaves me so curious and wanting more - to know the details of their backgrounds (for a lot of them, the band is their second family because their initial families are such failures).
I also would love to find out how the boys got together, too.
I agree, the whole Ji Hyuk/Soo Ah relationship seems so natural - they are good, caring people who have fallen for each other, and they progress without drama - just caring and open hearts.
I don't really get a sense of low self-esteem from Ji Hyuk, actually -- I think he's confident in himself and his abilities, it's not just bravado. If anything, I think it's his rival Seung Hoon who has doubts about his worth -- he recognizes that everything has been handed to him and seems to wonder if he could earn any of it on his own. Particularly in terms of music, he keeps challenging Ji Hyuk, who's just all "whatever, dude. Do your best and we'll do our best."
I so miss Byung Hee. I love the series as it is, but I really wish we could watch a whole separate series with Byung Hee as the one of a kind lead. He was an awesome character. I totally getcha on Hyun Soo - I couldn't even pick him out of the group for a while, but he started to stand out when he was the only one who didn't automatically go along with Ji Hyuk as the new leader, and really started to shine with the guitar playing focus. Now I'm totally into him! And I think you nailed it, it's not just babysitting, he is actually the one raising his little sister, which is why he's MIA a lot but the others just accept it. Man, nothing gets me more than the "parental responsibility put on the teen sibling" thing. Can't wait to see more.
As for Do Il, another thing that stood out was that he was the one delivering the beating to Pyo Joo in the alley, with the others standing back as if to leave it in his hands. He's totally intriguing -- he won't or can't live with his father, but he's at the pool hall, which is still his father's world, if the minor fringes. I really want to know more about him, although it's difficult to tell so far if the actor is capable of delivering a more should the writing call for it.
Getting to watch a kdrama romance where the characters just get together because they like each other, without any forced relationship ("we have to pretend to date! but I don't really like you! except I really do! but I won't say anything for 6 episodes!") or other unnecessarily tedious delays and misunderstandings, is total heaven. I think dramas too often forget that the relationships itself is the interesting and satisfying part, not the getting there.
I guess I didn't really mean self-esteem in a traditional sense but more like his place in the world - in a very class-based, structured society, it should be a no-brainer that Soo Ah would prefer Seung Hoon (who I actually really like - he's like a less weird version of Rui) to him. JH is fairly pragmatic and he knows what his societal 'worth' is, as someone who is one step from dropping out of school and not in any way high society as he is (I mean, who knows what his family's status is, but he clearly rejects it). I don't think he'd be comfortable making the first move on Soo Ah, for example, not until much later and he knows the world views him as dispensable (unlike Hyun Soo, he's not burning angry about it, but he is not exactly resigned to it either). Am I making sense?
I agree, an alternate universe, BH-centric drama would have been heaven (and possibly what Marry Me Mary should have been like).
Re: Hyun Soo. For the first two eps, he blended with KJ and HJ for me, but by now, I can't believe I ever mixed them up. Of them all, he's the angriest and probably the biggest cynic but he clearly has his own brand of loyalty (see concert). And yeah, the fact that he's a teen boy who pretty much has to raise his baby sister on his own (and seems to do a great job) kills me. I am really curious how his potential relationship with Yerim is going to go - that kid needs TLC more desperately than any of them, IMO, and that's quite a feat.
Re: Do Il. I get the sense (no idea justified or not) that the reason he's so controlled is, in part, because he may go really off the rails if he loses it. He is a gangster's kid after all, and a fairly notorious one at that - he's had to have imbibed something of it. I don't think he broke with his family entirely the way JH did (because that is hard!) even of he distanced himself, so perhaps that is why the pool hall.
So far, JH and SA feel so organic, both in being forthright and in their uncertainties. I actually prefer watching relationships not the 'getting there' part and dramas rarely focus on that, so thus far, this is heaven.
Oh i dunno about our OTP embarking on romance officially because although I still need sub to be sure, it seems like SoAh is doing a bit of backpedaling after that kiss. And according to the preview for next week, there will be a confession from JH. Which makes me just about batty, because hello? Why another confession? "I wanna be w you" is a very clear confession from her. And kisses/hand holding are very clear acceptance from him. Apparently I spoke too soon when I said I still know what it feels like to be teenagers.
No I mean, he held her hand again in ep 7 and asked why she's been avoiding him, reminding her that she told him she wanted to be w him. So she took her hand back and told him she said it because he was having a rough time. Which, can't be taken at face value of course but she's clearly having these "omg it's all so sudden, I dunno what I want" thoughts. So I think it's unfair to JH to be getting a confession and then cold shoulders so soon after.
Um, I'd say you are right. They BOTH do some backpedalling in eps 7-8, SA first (though a bit later she actually admits to SH that she likes someone else) and then JH. I don't think neither really knows how to handle the situation so they waffle about it some and get miffed about one another too. But it's JH who then finaly decides to do something about it because he's going crazy, LOL! The confession actually looks like another fab moment.

Date: 2012-02-21 06:47 pm (UTC)I am not much of a slasher so I didn't ship BH/JH other than as friends, but since they both liked the same girl, that would have been...awkward.
I am ridiculously obsessed with HS/YR and that barely gotten started. If anyone needs some tlc, it's the angry puppy.
It's pretty clear HJ and KJ are an otp :P
timescout plans to make icons.
Why is everyone not watching this?!
