This is my OTP for Chinese Paladin 3.

Indeed.

He's a warrior monk, she's an immortal earth goddess who loved him in his past lifetime. But now there are swords! I admit I am on his side of this. I mean, lady, it sucks he doesn't remember you but you guys were dating in the previous lifetime! It's not too surprising! Especially since the monks sealed his memories of past life just in case he does remember despite all probability. And you know this! So this guy is a monk in this life and has no idea who you are! It's not surprising he doesn't immediately stick his tongue down your throat! And you are so consumed by your issues, you are completely ignoring what he's telling you - namely that the demon you are protecting is harming his friends! You don't believe him or take it in, even. Chill, lady, it's not his fault he has no idea who you are, and in any event, I am spoiled so I can tell you you guys are going to get your star-crossed love soon enough.

OTP OTP OTP OTP )

And speaking of OTPs, I am glad to report that modern-day Hu Ge and LSS treat each other as devoted siblings but no more. In fact, LSS is even matchmaking Hu Ge and Yang Mi. So cute! But their past life - seriously, the death scene was almost as romantic as the OTP death scene in Three Kingdoms and that one involved the official, triple-sealed OTP there.

One of the reasons I am loving Jade Palace Lock Heart so is that after all the depressing or downright dreary dramas I am watching, this is such a light, charming, delightful ray of sunshine. But still with the period trappings, weapons and live-and-death dangers I like.

And, of course, the OTP. Much as I enjoy all the intrigue (Four is definitely my psychotic crush), the reason I obssess about this so, the reason I am so enthralled is the relationship between Eight and Qing Chuan - the push and pull of it, with both of them being so strong-willed and so very period Makino and Domyouji (this reminds me of my early days of fandom - it's as if I discovered an AU fanfic of Hanadan and its actually really good). This is all underpinned by the off-the-charts chemistry between Feng Shao Feng and Yang Mi. Every time they are on-screen, she fighting her incipient attraction and shoving him away with all her might and he bulldozing over any obstacle in his pursuit, I want to grin from the pure joy of it.

I will have you no matter what. I will believe in you no matter what )

In other news, I believe this is a MV for Book and Sword 2009 and I must get m hands on this drama ASAP.

And flist faints that I am watching something that is not a period cdrama.

But I really liked the first ep.

Make no mistake, TB is definitely makjang. A darker, more grown-up take, but still...It also reminds me of my favorite old-fashioned melos, with a saintly strong heroine and a completely ruthless and ambitious evil other girl, multiple birth secrets, revenge, men as pawns to the ladies etc.

So if you are looking for a romcom, this is probably not a drama for you. But as it is, it appears crisply written (it drew me in with the first five minutes) and, at least, if the cast has got to do some emotional acting, they got a bunch of heavy-hitters with Han Hye Jin as the protagonist, who seems saintly but with a spine of streel (she's secretly raising nemesis and hero's baby, people!), Kim Min Jung as her former best friend and now nemesis, Joo Sang Wook as a man involved with both of them, and Seo Do Young as the marginally saner second male lead.

More importantly, this got me emotionally involved. I am already rooting for the heroine to demolish her nemesis, to kick the male lead in the face, and to triumph over everyone.

KMJ is a truly underrated actress and I love seeing her on my screen again. Once again, she was barely on-screen (most of the ep was childhood flashback) but even in those minutes she left quite an impression on me - of selfishness and awfulness but also a certain kind of desperate mental fragility. Oh, she is going to be fun and complex to hate!

The male lead. I sort of hate his present-day character already even though we've only seen him for two minutes. I am spoiled from the trailers/promos because he was seduced away by the nemesis and while the nemesis is evil for doing it because she knew heroine liked him and probably did it because of it, it takes two to tango - he's the one who enthusiasticaly shoved his tongue down nemesis' throat after all. And even now he doesn't seem to want to look for heroine but is nemesis-fixated. His childhood self was kinda sweet though and if Giant is any indication, JSW is perfect at playing bastards you start out hating only to make you love him madly later. Good casting, drama!

Seo Do Young hadn't had much to do yet other than to be gorgeous but I am just glad to see him on my screen. I have no idea why he as leading man didn't take off - Spring Waltz is my favorite romantic kdrama of all time - but I'll take seeing him any way I can get.

So yes, first ep is definitely good and this goes on my "watch watch watch" list. I'll probably try to hoard at least first 5-6 eps to binge but we'll see how long that resolution holds.

Now I am off to try to find some version of Royal Family subs.

Yeah, judgmental 'best friend', why don't you go die in a fire? Seriously, you see the lady you consider your best friend being mauled by a guy and automatically assume she's committing adultery and won't listen to her explanations and decide she's the worst evilest blah blah blah.

First, even if she has been, she's your friend! She comes first, ahead of some man you barely know. Second, listen to her freaking explanation, witch! And then she tells it to childhood love so of course he misunderstands. Ugh, witch. And childhood love goes and tells heroine how disappointed and ashamed he is in her blah blah he's not her friend any more and that now he can't blame her husband for beating her. Ugh, prig, go die! How about you trust her or listen to her explanation or stop freaking judging her? You and former best friend deserve each other - go hook up and preach at each other noon and night. Yeah, and then they learn the truth and are very sorry and are also so sorry she was so depressed and abandoned by her friends she tried to kill herself. Whatever, freaks, I hope you roast in hell. I am glad you never get her, childhood love, because you suck! And her best friend sucks worse! I love watching her pine for childhood love who is only fixated on Lanyun.

And then childhood love promises to get her a divorce and marry her (rapist has been disposed of by that point) but when her disgusting husband, who beat her and let her get raped, was all "but I loooove her, can I have her?" he just bailed. Ugh, first love, you really suck. There are no words for your sucktitude.

Oh God, I basically hate everyone in this drama except for heroine and Playboy, who asked her to marry him, again (because he assumed she turned him down earlier due to not wanting to deal with rapist's potential rampage and now the man is gone), got his heart crushed to bits when she told him she loved someone else, and took it like a man, wishing her a happy life and leaving her the hell alone, like she wanted.

Also, seriously, whoever made this has some sort of a whipping fetish. Heroine has already been whipped twice and from vids, Playboy gets whipped at some point too. At least they keep their clothes on? That's a small mercy?

Man, this is written by someone with issues. Honestly, I am enjoying this but all that unending heaping of misery on heroine has basically made me detach and numb for my own self-preservation because it's so over-the-top. I mean, past a certain point, it just makes you suspend disbelief that the character isn't just sitting in the corner rocking back and forth and banging her head on the wall (same reaction I got with Ou Chen in Summer Desire - past a certain point you just can't believe a character will go on being functional). I understand that they have to make her married life hell to justify her committing adultery (even emotional adultery) due to societal mores deciding what is acceptable for the heroine and what is not but still - tone it down.

I am glad the rapist has got punished though and became an imbecile. OK, that sentence basically encapsulates the awesome, glorious, addictive awfulness of this drama. Now I know how [livejournal.com profile] lesbiassparrow felt when she watched Stairway to Heaven - I feel dirty yet I cannot stop.

I am beginning to think Playboy got his irresistible reputation and got into so many women's pants simply because he treated them as human beings.

Heroine: "Yun [childhood love] has left me. And I don't love my husband. I don't know what I should live for. I just want to end my life."
Playboy: "Live for yourself."

This. Frelling THIS.

And then he tells her by her logic he should be offing himself too because she doesn't love him, but he's very much still here and she can do it too. And he tells her she should treasure every day in her life because even if her childhood love doesn't love her, in the future she can meet someone she will love who will love and protect her, and if she doesn't love her husband, she can make money and repay the bride price and leave. It is all possible as long as she's alive.

Playboy, I just might be in love with you.

The scene where scumbag Yun just ditched her (because her abusive husband begged him, barf) and she runs out and sees Playboy there and asks him to take her away, and he does - and takes her somewhere peaceful and beautiful and keeps his hands to himself and then tells her the above - all about her wants and needs and (to use a college term) self-actualization as opposed to trying to force his love on her in psycho fashion or alternatively tell her about wifely duty like a prig? Seriously. I literally started clapping. I totally love him now. He's the only man in this whole benighted town she lives in that I do not want to murder because he's the only one who (a) treats her as a human being with thoughts, wishes and will of her own (b) actually listens to what she says (c) puts what she wants above what he wants (d) motivates her to live her life for her own benefit, above all, and that doesn't have to include him unless she decides it does.

Scene in question )

And that totally brings her back from despair and she makes plan for how she can work and repay the bride price and she makes a wish in the temple (?) and she's back to herself. YES.

Though Puppy Killer just returned to the scene and this can't be anything good. Lady, why don't you go after Playboy's two wives - presumably he's had sex with them at some point, and I don't think he's even got as far as holding hands with the heroine. Yes, arranged wives v. luuuuurve but still - priorites! Not to mention that trashing the business of the woman he loves as a way to see your ex (because he's going to rush to check on her) is really not a productive route to rekindle your relationship.

ETA: Bwahahahha, Puppy Killer, I kinda love you and your crazy. When Playboy tells her for the umpteenth time that he is sorry but he only loves heroine and he won't be Puppy Killer's lover because it would be a betrayal (which makes me wonder - if he won't have sex with sexy exie in order to be true to his OTP, does it mean he's not sexing up his wives either? It seems so. No wonder they don't have a baby yet), Puppy Killer tells him fine, but before they part, can he hug her. So he hugs her and she arranges for the heroine to walk in at the same time. Puppy Killer, there is a kdrama waiting for you somewhere! No wonder Playboy tells her she's insane.
