I am obsessed with a drama about high school kids who want to dance and sing for a living. If I had any sense of shame, it would probably be kicking in right about now, but luckily I am utterly lacking in that department.

Clearly, they got their confetti )

I think the reason I like DH is not because it's particularly original (not even the most rabid fan can argue that), but because the pace is brisk, the vibe is fun and not mopey, our ensemble cast is almost preternaturally likeable and, above all, the story is proven success - I mean, who would not root for a team of outcast misfits to win through against nasty teachers, bad parents, and envious "good" students. Everyone loves an underdog story!

Also, because I have too much time on my hands, I was thinking of the fates of everyone once the drama ends and here is what I'd want. Obviously, since I am not the writer, any resemblance to actual fates of characters is purely coincidental.

Sam Dong: He's the superstar K, of course. Oh, and he bought his Mom the biggest house in that village :)

Baekhee: She's got the talent, the drive, and the ruthlessness. Of course she became a big star. Nowhere near as big as K, of course, but her albums and concerts do very well in Korea. She's a solo act because she'd never fit within a group, but that hasn't hindered her career. She goes through men like tissues but there are no serious relationships. She does plan to get married some day, to an appropriate choice, of course, once her career starts slowing down. She'd probably better off with some therapy but that's a no-no in Korea, of course, plus she'd have to admit there is something wrong in the first place.

Hyemi: She debuted with a pop group and did well, but when the group disbanded, Hyemi shocked all her fans by deciding to go train for opera after all (I know the drama is all about pop >>> everything but hey, this was her lifelong dream, I think it would cool if she got it). After her training, she started singing opera professionally in Korea. She's very well-regarded and even got to perform at La Scala and the Met a few times. Of course, opera being much more of a niche in Korea, her recordings sell a fraction of copies of Baekhee's but she's happy with that. She and Jin Gook have a relationship which sells magazine copies and annoys his fangirls.

Jin Gook: He became quite popular after his debut, though probably not as popular as he would have been if he was single (or pretending to be). Having an illegitimate but famous entertainer son cost Evil Daddy the election but there was little Evil Daddy could do to show his displeasure publically.

Jason and Pil Sook: - they performed for a while but ultimately neither one had much drive or interest (or issues) to dedicate to clawing their way to the top. Instead they became the favorite teachers in the best performing arts school - Kirin, of course. Of course, they are together, to the displeasure of a large number of male students who have hopeless puppy crushes on Pil Sook. It's a good thing Jason is so laid-back :)

Teacher Oh Hyuk: - seeing that his class produced so many famous performers, of course he was the next choice to replace the current evil principal when he finally overstepped his bounds and was kicked out.

Clearly, I need a life.

I've started to watch fancams of DH filming. That's it. I. Need. To. Stop.

Also, the soompi thread for that drama is somewhere I try to steer far from. Not only are the character wars full of flamey ragey fun (suprisingly, the shipper wars aren't too bad, but the 'Baekhee=awesome/psycho; Hyemi=awesome/bitch' wars are craaazy), but I get the feeling I am old enough to be any of the participants' mother. Their discussions of life and romance, regardless of their shippy preferences, make me grin nostalgically and a bit worriedly.

Anyway, my slate is pretty open - other than DH and and Gloria, I am not really following anything actively (I decided I am going to wait for My Princess to finish and then binge). So I decided to check out Joe Cheng's newest, Channel X, in which he's a news anchor accused of the murder of his fiancee. It looks gritty and good about 5 mins in!

And it's the twdrama Endless Love, starring Wilbur Pan and Sandrine Pinna ([livejournal.com profile] ockoala was right - Channel X really doesn't work, so I switched).

Twdramas were my first drama love and I always keep coming back. There are a lot of silly and shrill ones out there, but when they get it right, they get it so right and hit me emotionally the way no kdrama or jdrama can hope to do. Twdrama love stories, done right >>>> everything.

And EL is a love story, perfectly done. The protagonists put the new meaning into star-crossed. Sandrine is a rich young woman and Wilbur is a poor young man who fall in love. However, the differences in status are the least of their problems - it turns out that her family is responsible for the ruin of his. Finding that out, he walks out during their wedding day. And the story goes from there...

Have a MV:

The best part is that viki has Russian subs so I can finally watch something in Russian. Mmmmmmmmm.

But does anyone know of any downloadable subs? I prefer dling to streaming - English or Russian subs are fine.

Btw, someone on my flist mentioned this - I can't remember who you are, but thank you, I would have never checked it out otherwise.

You guys, he does underground extreme fighting to earn money to take care of his mentally handicapped father!

(Also sells fake brand clothes on the street and delivers milk, but that's a little less sexy).

Mmmmm, twdramas, ILY.

Btw, is Sandrine Pinna Caucasian or at least half-Caucasian? She looks entirely white.

I like that her character is totally crushing on him without realizing it yet. Heee. I mean, he bandaged her foot and got her a lollipop and was cute while doing so. What more can a college girl want? I also like that she's spoiled and thoughtless but not too much or too bad about it - sort of in a 'she's young and has been petted all her life' kind of way.

Finished ep 1 of Endless Love, and yup, it's total obsession time.

[livejournal.com profile] ambergold, have you watched this? It seems very much like your thing - very shippy, some yummy angst, lots of kissing, happy ending.

I don't find Wilber Pan objectively good-looking when I look at stills, but he's quite yummy in action. Or maybe I just really love his character, especially since he seems to lead a life usually reserved for heroes of particularly miserable kdramas - totally broke, having to fight (and throw fights and get beaten) to earn money, with a dead mother and a senile father, with no time, money or opportunity for friends or dating, and little enough time for sleep between all his jobs. Maybe he was a serial killer in his past life. I just love that he's such a sweet person despite it all, even if he does seem to have quite a bit of justifiable bitterness and anger about his condition.

And also, nobody does OTPs the way twdramas do - when done right, twdrama OTPs are by far my favorite.

Oh, and have another MV. I am obsessed with this one:
