Had a long and exhausting day today and didn't do anything fannish except watching ep 5 of Operation Proposal, which continues to work for me ridiculously well. I am so invested in Baek Ho's quest, it's not even funny. I wonder if it's because he'd normally be a secondary guy, or because his chemistry with Yi Seul is so lovely, or because he's a flawed but very decent person.

Nah, it's because YSH looks at his leading lady with all his heart (and heartbreak of hopeless longing) in his eyes:

Oh, and because the drama gives me scenes of total perfection like this (she's drunk and crying about the wreck of his baseball dreams and all he is concerned about is not the wreck of his dreams but as to whether if he did succeed, would he have had a chance to win her heart).

Darlings! It doesn't hurt that I want Coach to go DIAF.

I haven't had a chance to watch today's ep of SUFBB yet (PLEASE DON'T SPOIL ME!!!) but as I am waiting for subs, have this delightful pic from the photoshoot Sung Joon and Jo Boa, SUFBB's OTP, did recently:

(You can find the rest on dramabeans)

Random tangential thought - in a minor way, Ji Hyuk/Soo Ah remind me a bit of my otp in Dream High, Hyemi/Jin Gook. I dumped the drama when it became clear it was going to become Sam Dong-centric and go SD/Hyemi instead (don't get me started), but for a while there, I shipped Hyemi/JG like crazy, what with the whole princess-fallen-on-hard-times and her street-kid black knight thing they had going on. And this is a little like this, only 10000x better.

Was reading an article on dramabeans about Kim Su Hyun's increased popularity after Dream High and came across this phrase:

"he was that good [to make her think he was dubbed by a professional] — better, even, than some of the cast’s idol singers, I thought."

There are multiple pages of comments agreeing with that statement.

And all I could do was boggle. Sure, looks and charisma are subjective, but vocal quality is much less so.

And Kim Su Hyun? Kim Su Hyun? As a great singer - wanted by companies for his singing, praised by dramabeans and commenters as better than professionals? Have I fallen into some parallel universe? I literally laughed when I read that.

I have nothing against KSH. He's a talented, hard-working guy and deserves his success. He was certainly the best actor out of the young cast and, while his looks aren't my thing (too young!), I can certainly see why people find him attractive.

But singer? Singer? Heck no. Sure, he's not bad for an amateur. He's actually amazingly, shockingly good, for one. Key phrase being "for an amateur." To compare him to Wooyoung, IU, Eunjung or Suzy is pretty much insane! (Taec being a rapper and not a singer, I'd give it a "fair enough" pass). I don't follow kpop and first found out about these people's existence from the drama, so I am no offended idol fangirl. I just find this beyond bizarre.

In fact, my biggest problem with Sam Dong ending up as K was my suspension of disbelief - the guy clearly can't dance much (when he replaced Wooyoung in that solo, I cringed), his singing isn't up to par with his castmates', and he doesn't have that raw on-stage charisma that the idols in the cast actualy do - that charisma is a large chunk of why they are picked to be idols!

Now, I don't have a problem with that being a fact of life, as KSH is an actor not a member of 2PM. His job is to act, which he does excellently and better than all 2PM members combined, I suspect. But to buy him as super-idol K (out of all those kids!) required quite a suspension of disbelief on my part. And to believe he's good enough to be a professional singer/idol without further extensive training and is better than his idol castmates at it - I am sorry. I can't. My disbelief stretches only so far.

OK, enough of my blabber. Proof is in the pudding, as they say. Here's a vocal 'battle' between Wooyoung and KSH. Compare the singing skills between them, please:

And here is a "real" singing superstar, Lee Seung Chul, doing the same song:

Case closed.

1. If there is anything cuter than Yang Mi and Feng Shao Feng (a.k.a. my current obssession Qing Chuan and Eight a.k.a. period Makino and Domyouji in JPLH) singing together on some variety show, I have yet to see it.

I don't care about the weird background/dancers or the fact that FSF, while he sounds nice for not a professional, should stick to acting. I don't care. Because OH THE CUTE, IT KILLS ME. I want to squish them into one adorable ball of squee. When is the JPLH sequel coming out again? Not that I finished JPLH itself yet. Though I should probably stop haunting withs2 for more Jade Palace Lock Heart subs - if I check every few hours, the status won't change.

Semi-related, from browsing on-line, I noticed people either really love JPLH and think upcoming BBJX is not their cup of tea, or really dislike JPLH and really look forward to BBJX. There is not much overlap. Hmmmm. (Disclosure - I am fully in the former camp).

2. Speaking of cute couples I adore, I continued with twdrama Endless Love with Wilbur Pan and Sandrine Panna.

I saw the first three eps, fell madly in love, then got sidetracked and was waiting for a lot of dlable files/subs so I could binge. Well, I started the binge, am on ep 4 and still - I have no words for how much I love it. As [livejournal.com profile] ockoala is to Happiness is a Sunny Day is [livejournal.com profile] dangermousie to Endless Love. Most of my love is motivated by my ridiculous, irrational, protective love of Wilbur and Sandrine's characters - they are such lovely and realistic people (I especially love Wilbur's character - I feel ridiculously emotionally overinvested in him) - and their explosive chemistry. Nobody does a romantic drama quite like twdramas. I know this one is going to break my heart before giving me the inevitable happy ending, and I am ready for the ride.

A few more unspoilery caps of the two )

And speaking of the two of them, even though I posted this MV before, I love it so much, it merits a repost. I dare anyone watching it not wanting to check out the drama.

3. I only had time for one ep of Young Warriors of the Yang Clan today. I finally understand why some fangirls ship Lady Blacksmith with Yelu Xie.

They do share a great deal of chemistry plus Yuan Hong is a good-looking and charismatic guy.

But I am still on the Five/Blacksmith ship. Seriously, hotness or not, Yelu Xie is sworn to invade and destroy Blacksmith's country, likely killing scores of her friends and acquiantances in the process. Not to mention he's palling around with the guy who killed her parents and has no problem with said guy offing tons of innocents to help him invade. Good boyfriend material he's not. Also, Five is not only righteous and upright but totally adorable.

A couple of caps )

4. Dream High ended today. I completely lost interest in it during the second half (I think I am just too old for those types of stories). But I do plan to check out the concert special tomorrow. Singing and dancing yay.

5. The first two eps of The Holy Pearl are subbed on viki.

6. O-M-G. Unless I am very much mistaken, the below is Yu Yutong-centric MV from the 2009 version of The Book and the Sword a.k.a. the only Louis Cha novel I've read. Talking to [livejournal.com profile] hamster428 reminded me how much I liked the guy - he was basically my crush from the book. I mean, the scholar/fighter/flute player/likes to cut himself is a combo made just for moi.

I know that Jiang Hu is subbing this. Off to look as soon as I finish Yang Clan. Qing hairstyles bother me less and less.

7. And speaking of wuxias on my short list, my raging obsession with Peter Ho shows no signs of abating so I got my DVDs of Men and Legends out and plan to get on them after I finish Yang Clan - it will make a nice counterpoint to The Book and the Sword. Turn of the century! Dylan Kuo and Peter Ho! OTPs! From what I am aware of, Peter Ho and his OTP, who's a plucky reporter, are cute for most of the run of the drama until they get hit with the angst hammer and are beaten into bloody bits with it. Ah, yes, it's a Peter Ho drama all right.

A couple of MVs )

8. Despite my misgivings, I decided to give the first ep of Midas a try. We'll see how it goes. Oh, Jang Hyuk, see what you make me do!

OK, this is getting very long, so good-night, everyone!

In case you haven't noticed, I've been less and less invested in Dream High and after today, I am forced to conclude I am done with it.

It's not a bitter break-up, more of a "it's not you, it's me/we have grown apart/I will always remember you fondly" school.

There are two main reasons. The first is simply unfortunate timing - in the middle of DH I discovered Jade Palace and Three Kingdoms and rediscovered my love of period cdramas and thus went of the deep end on them. And due to my innate preferences, it was hard for me to feel particularly invested in a bunch of modern teenagers, when contrasted with the adrenaline and sacrifice and stakes of period epics. I am honestly surprised DH lasted as long as it did with me - I always prefer epic, period and angsty over modern, light, and teenager-centric. I was never too invested in it emotionally because it is not the kind of drama I go emotionally insane over. So sooner or later, something was going to come up to supercede it.

The second reason does have to do with DH's direction. Starting with ep 11, the drama started focusing a lot more on Sam Dong and I have never found SD particularly interesting or compelling. The more they dwelled on his amazingness (which is made even more confusing by the fact that KSH cannot sing or dance as well as his idol costars and the drama's insistence that he can was really beginning to bug me). In fact, the near-universal fangirling for him mystifies me (it looks like he will end up with Hyemi and I really think it's due to fan love - the earlier parts of the story were clearly setting up Jin Gook and Hyemi as the OTP). In fact, the more people fangirl him, the more he irritates me. So the Sam Dong show was losing me as well.

On the plus side, this gives me time to check out Mike He and Janine Chang's Happiness is like a Sunny Day so it's all good.

Goodbye, drama! It's been fun!

Pretty self-explanatory - some scenes I really liked but about which I haven't posted before and related thoughts.

Enter at your own risk - 150+ pics behind the cut )

And now I really am going to bed...

Also, for everyone for whom a cdrama based on a dense 14th-century classic is their idea of hell, I do plan to catch up on newest episodes of New Tales of the Gisaeng this weekend. Shockingly, if I could pick only one airing kdrama to follow, it would be that one. Yes, even over Dream High. I don't deal well with shipper uncertainty.

Sorry for being relatively MIA for the last few days. What with Baby Mousie's birthday party, family visiting, Valentine's Day, it got a little busy. But now the family went home (boooo, I love having Mr. Mousie's parents around), the party is over (it was a big hit - 9 of her friends came and she had a blast. She's been muttering "Happy Day, Heehee [corruption of her name]" ever since and demanding cake). And V Day is behind us - it was our 11-yr anniversary. We got a babysitter and went to a dinner and a movie. Munchkin was verrrry grumpy at me this morning for 'ditching' her but eventually condescended to forgive me. Oh, and Mr. Mousie gave me an amazon gift card among other things, which I have already partially used to acquire for my kindle a book on the Tang Dynasty as well as a book on the Incas I've been eyeing for months.

Anyway, back to dramas.

1. Dream High

2. Jade Palace Lock Heart:

Jade Palace Lock Heart ep 8 )

3. Haven't had time yet to catch up this weekend's eps of New Tales of the Gisaeng but seeing that I am only watching one storyline, it won't take long. I honesntly cannot imagine any circumstances under which Saran will become a gisaeng, but supposedly she will, so I am very curious.

4. Is The Duo done with its childhood scenes yet? I want to check it out but only once adults come on the scene.

5. The first ep of the Inuyasha-type The Holy Pearl is about halfway subbed so I am going to check it out. Apparently they credited Inuyasha so it's all cool :)

ETA: Just finished the first ep and I like. It helps that I always found Gillian Chung immensely likeable on-screen though she isn't much of an actress. It's fun, animeish fantasy - not a serious materpiece or anything, but quite enjoyable. Plus, horned dude is hot.

6. The list of unsubbed cdramas that I really really would love to watch if only subs were out there is as long as my arm, but I am adding another one to it: The Conquest/The Warriors, starring Chen Kun and Sonija Kwok as star-crossed lovers in the Warring Kingdoms period (I think). There's slavery, angst, shippiness and other good things. Have a MV:

7. I've pretty much lost interest in Bu Bu Jing Xin, the upcoming period/timetravel drama with Liu Shishi, because [livejournal.com profile] fishcake gave me some details on the plot and it has some really big dealbreakers for me, but I have to say the design looks gorgeous. Hellochloe posted some new stills on her blog. Go take a look :)

8. Great news! Jiang Hu picked up cdrama Iljimae for subbing! You probably know them from Legend of Condor Heroes 200, HXM's Shanghai Bund etc. They are really really really good! It will probably take them a while to get to it seeing that they are busy subbing the monster Three Kingdoms (which I am dying to watch), but when they do, it will be excellent excellent subs!
