See this trailer for the upcoming HBO show based on Game of Thrones, G.R.R. Martin's fantasy epic set in a quasi-Medieval world:

Shivers.

Shivers.

And I speak as someone who's never read a word of the novels.

Based purely on the trailer (a) this looks so much my thing - it makes me think of Icelandic sagas I used to love (someone adapt Laxdaela Saga into a show already) (b) I am going to love Sean Bean's character so very much. I always go for the honorable ones (sorry, [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns, I know you are a huge Jaime fan but Ned Stark seems much more my type).

Oh I love Ned too but I think Jaime gets the most amazing arc in the novels. I didn't love him until the third book, by the way! And I wanted to ask you what you thought of this new trailer since everyone else I know who's seen it is a huge fan of the books. So glad it worked for you!! Yay!!

It looks epic and very much my thing. I love those big epic sagas and really with the Western TV did more of those types of stories, whether historical or in fantasy format (I don't mean teen cheese-trainwreck that is Merlin, I mean genuinely smart and epic). I love when China does those but I'd love even more if American TV did since I am even more familiar with those tropes. (Seriously - why has nobody adapted any sagas into a TV show?)

Re: Jaime. I am pretty spoiled thanks to your awesome explanatory post plus wikipedia and he sounds like a very interesting character but getting past incest plus attempted child murder is a big big thing. Not sure if I can, but we'll see once I watch.

I don't think the first season of the tv show is going to change your mind about him. I hated him until halfway through book 3 :p. But there are AO many great characters that I feel sure you will almost certainly live at least one of them!

And yeah for once, "epic" is not an overstatement for this series.

Are they planning to make a season for each of the books? How many books are there?

I can tell I'll love Ned, so even if I don't care about anyone else, I'm in. Plus, it can't possibly be as depressing as the Chinese epic I am watching right now so...

There will be five books (by the middle of July, yippeeeeee!) And I guess the plan is to make one season each for books 1 & 2, and then (if things get that far), they'll probably split book 3 into two seasons (and they might do the same with books 4-5, depending on how far the tv series gets.) Apparently the producers of the show are the only two people besides Martin himself who know how the series ends. (I really don't want them all to be in a car or a plane together :P)

it can't possibly be as depressing as the Chinese epic I am watching right now

Hmmm, well, I'm not watching the Chinese epic, but I have had some pretty sad moments in these books. Actual tears, throwing of things at walls, etc. :D

LOL re: planes.

That is a lot of material. If I like it, I hope it happens :)

That makes me even more interested. I love my depressing stories.
