It's going to be my birthday tomorrow and I don't know what I feel about this. On one hand, it's always great not to have keeled over, OTOH birthdays make me feel old. I am going to be twenty-eight and that feels old old old old (yes, I know it's nonsense). I was three years old when my Mom was twenty-eight. I can remember her being twenty-eight. Scary. Even scarier is the fact that I don't feel my age. Twenty-four maybe. Or younger. I remember being twenty-one like it was yesterday, I remember being twenty-five and thinking it was old. I don't even want to imagine how depressed I'll be when thirty hits.

Yeah.

Enough of self-pity though. I dreamt last night that I was watching Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna in the theater. My dream self is just as big a fangirl as my real self. Actually, seeing that I am considering spending the evening of my birthday in a movie theater, watching Fanaa, I think my dream self has a ways to go.

In other movie news, I bought the Director's Cut of Kingdom of Heaven and can't wait to watch it.

Now to completely switch tack. Has anyone else read Elizabeth Peters' Night Train to Memphis? It's one of my favorite books and I always read it when I am tired or need cheering up. Peters is best known for her Amelia Peabody series (which are good and I adored Ramses and Nefret but she should have stopped with He Shall Thunder in the Sky, which really tied up all the storylines). NTTM is not a Peabody book and is the first Peters book I've ever read. It's the last book of four or so in a very loose series of stories about Vicky Bliss, an art historian amateur sleuth and her mysterious and shady and snarky on-again-off-again lover John (real name John Tregarth, alias Sir John Smythe. He has an odd sense of humor), who also happens to be an extremely accomplished antiqueties thief. You don't need to have read the previous books to enjoy NTTM (I hadn't at the time), and in any event NTTM is by far the best of the bunch. Vicky, the narrator is tough as a bulldozer, clueless, stubborn and hilarious. John is a fictional descendant of such characters as Lymond and Sir Peter Wimsey. The OTP is snarky and angsty and good. They actually remind me of Logan and Veronica from Veronica Mars a bit, personality-wise.

And speaking of VM, crazy people on TWoP are continuing to puzzle me as they are all currently bemoaning the lack of passion in L/V kisses. They are all "we love the ship but JD and KB don't know how to kiss passionately." Maybe it's me, but that's kinda insane. A kiss is a kiss, unless there is some weird biting, and L/V kissing is totally swoony, but not only that, all their make-out scenes are scorching hot. Argh. Seriously, these scenes are as hot as scenes with people keeping their clothes on can be, and I've rewatched those scenes a bit too much for sanity :P

And I am continuing my watch of Chobits which is adorable. Chi is extremely lucky she ended up with Hideki. He does not treat her as a personcom, but as a person. He can't help it. When she shuts down because of insufficient battery he freaks out, even though she is (others think) a machine and can be recharged later. He ends up carrying her, climbing embankments, to get her some energy summplies, and when they fall off a height, he automatically positions himself so as to break her fall and so as the impact of it will hit him and not her. When he finds her half-dressed after a 'job' (long story) he takes off his shirt and puts it around her, even though she is not regarded as a person. He takes her to a bookstore and when the choice is between a dictionary he needs for studying or a book she wants, he buys the book she wants as a present. When she earns money and wants to give it to him, even though he is broke, he insists she keep it as it's hers. Chi is supposed to be a computer, but Hideki treats her as a person. And you know what? She is one, and his actions bring it out and it's all wonderful. But Hideki is also lucky he ended up with Chi. Otherwise he'd be very lonely in the big city, and have no one to cheer him on and to care for.

And I close with the ridiculous Bolly fashion.

28 is not ooooold!!! Waaaaah! Because If 28 is OLD... I old plus 4 and that doesn't make me happy! :P I'm totally goofy, I know! I totally understand what you mean, I don't feel my age either :(.

Anyway, I hope you have a fabulous birthday tomorrow with your family and friends. And many happy returns! :)

Thank you! That cake looks yummy and so chocolatey (my favorite thing)!

Yeah, I know it's not old. I am being mopey for no reason, and I can't even blame it on PMS :).

Happy Birthday tomorrow! Have fun. And not feeling your age is a good, good thing!

And on the costume front: those cowboy outfits? There is no universe in which they look good. No even one occupied solely by the blind.

Thanks!

There is no universe in which they look good. No even one occupied solely by the blind.

If these pics had a wider districbution, the universe would be occupied by the blind, such blindess induced by the photos. Ugh. Makes Hirthik's pleather look good.

Makes Hirthik's pleather look good.

That thought actually did stray through my mind. Compared to some of the others the pleather looks quite restrained. And I never thought I would type that statement.

ROFL. But yes, when you consider some of the outfits. Or even Anil barechested, pleather begins to look inviting...

Oh Dear...Kriish doesn't look very good at all...

Hey! That is so crazy about your dream because I dreamt that I was watching KANK too the other night. How wierd is that...at least your not the only mad one though! :) Only one more day to go till the trailer :D :D :D :D :D

Hope you have a good birthday!!! The actual age doesnt matter - the fact that your as fangirly as me (19) doesnt make you old at all ;)But seriously! Just enjoy yourself and squee for me when you see the trailer *sigh* I probably won't be seeing it for days unless it comes up for downloading from the net :(

Word. There's all kinds of post-renewal-tension-release crabbiness on TWoP these days. But people who say KB and JD are not scorching up the place in their scenes are ON CRACK. Jeezum.

Date: 2006-05-25 11:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
I do NOT understand the crabbiness. Surely, they should rejoice about the renewal and the fact that L/V isn't left hanging. How can you not see the chemistry anyway? People are insane.

And they suck. Generally. Even some VM fans. But apart from the general fandom equasion popularity enough to survive=asshats+ barbiefans, I think it's just leftover stress and general "no new episodes for four months" angst bleeding out. Things will chill soon.

I hope. O_o

Maybe the chemistry is searing their eyeballs which is why they can't see it?

I've been puzzling over the whole "maybe JD, KB, and CC don't know how to kiss but boy was that Hannah scene hot" vibe as well... Honestly, I think everyone's just running out of things to talk about.

So you've got me searching eBay for Chobits. And I'm not an anime person. (The closest I ever got was Akira, which I actually liked, but that's beside the point.) Is it dubbed or subtitled? I'm totally interested... is it worth $25 or so?

Date: 2006-05-26 01:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Chobits is really really cute. The DVD I had is both dubbed and subbed (as is going to be any DVD that is either legit or from a half-decent pirate). I prefer subtitles because I like the voice acting.

I am certainly enjoying Chobits so I think it's worth it. It's a light show so far, not too heavy on over-dramatics, but it's lovely. it also has a lot of sex-related jokes which might or might not be off-putting depending on your views on the same (accidental groping or what not).

The Logan/Veronica kissing thing will only make sense when you come to realize that the people on TWOP are generally stupid. They are the worst kind of fandom people. So sure they're right, and so secure in that knowledge that their opinions become across as particularly stupid.

Date: 2006-05-26 01:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] muffinkath7.livejournal.com
Need to add: this isn't meant to insult anyone who does post at TWOP. I just found them to be very "know-it-all"y there. I much prefer the VM people I've friended here on LJ. :) There is so much less negativity in journals.

Date: 2006-05-26 01:26 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
I agree about the negativity thing. People at TWoP are a bit too into themselves and 'OMG how cool are we' vibe. But with their latest chemistry talk, I am beginning to think they are blind as well...

That is such a pretty icon!

I love the V/L kisses that we've gotten and of course, the chemistry is fantastic. I commented over there about Logan/Hannah kisses being pretty hot, because someone was criticizing JD as a kisser and saying that he and CC didn't have a lot of sexual chemistry, and I didn't think that was fair. CC has never had much sexual chemistry with anyone on the screen.

JD and KB have great kisses, but they haven't had a lot of long deep kisses yet on the show. I look forward to some next season. *g* I think that's what some of the posters were agreeing on. Now, people that say their kisses are lackluster or fall flat make no sense to me.

Date: 2006-05-26 04:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
The reason the deep/shallow kissing thing didn't even cross my mind is because I don't expect deep kissing unless it's a very heavy uninterrupted make-out scene that will potentially lead to sex. I.e. I can't imagine exploring someone's tonsils with my tongue unless there was some heavy duty, prolonged making out and we haven't seen much of that for L/V (hope for next season?)

Mmmmmmmmmm. L/V.

And speaking of that, your icon is adorable!

Happy birthday! And as so many have already said, 28 is not old. It's the perfect age. :)

You got the KoH director's cut already? Boohoo, I've got to wait till September or something, I think, for the region 2 set. Not good. Meh.

Thank you!

The director's cut is SO worth it. I liked the original cut just fine but after seeing this I am mad on Ridley Scott's behalf because now the theatrical cut just looks butchered compared to this which is so much more character driven.

I'm going to be 28 next month, so I understand. It's like, how did I get so close to 30 already? I can remember thinking 21 was old. I certainly don't feel my age. I haven't accomplished any of the things I wanted to do by now.

I haven't seen the comments on TWOP, but that is weird. I get the feeling people just invent stuff to bitch about if there isn't anything.
