Is there any way to make my LJ non-LJseek/google etc searcheable short of flocking it all?

Also, I've been getting some spam as anon replies. Any way I can screen only anon replies or will I be forced to screen all replies? Any ideas?

1. Go to Manage Settings [http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/]
At the very bottom, find a section called "Additional Privacy Options". CLICK ON "MINIMIZE your journal's inclusion in search engine results" option.

2.http://www.livejournal.com/manage/comments/ --> Comment screening --> Screen comments from anonymous commenters

Hey, dangermousie, just to a word of warning that the first option helps, but that's all it does. I check several blog aggregators to see if my LJ comes up (because I don't want to be found this way at all), and unfortunately not all of them respect the "minimize" request. You won't see new posts appear on LJ Seek, that's true, but you may very well see posts come up elsewhere (bloglines, technorati, etc.). As far as I know, there's no way to completely stop your LJ (or any public LJ) from being searchable. And even if you do flock it all, blog aggregators will likely still have old links up for ages, or forever, even if those full posts are no longer public. It's very annoying, and it's one of the reasons that I now post all community posts under f-lock because most community mods never check the "minimize inclusion" option which increases your searchability, esp. if you link to your personal LJ.

Plus, as far as I can tell, it does nothing to stop your non-flocked posts from being put into syndication aggregators w/out your say so (heck even for me who has like no reading list compared to the big names on my flist).

Exactly - the reality is that any public post is "fair game" even with that "minimize inclusion" box ticked, so I think very carefully before I post unlocked nowadays (which sucks). Someone as popular and prolific as [livejournal.com profile] dangermousie probably has feeds all over the place because there are most likely many interested people who pick up her posts through various aggregators.

Thanks! The thing is, for me it's not a privacy issue: I don't post anything outside the cut unless I don't care the whole world knows about it (so I suppose the whole world knows I am obsessive :D), it's more not wanting to be spammed and a little paranoia as a result of lj strikeout of '07 ;) I don't post anything objectionable but who knows what will be a target next.

Ehhh, I'll probably uncheck even the minimize search button eventually. If someone in Papua New Guinea wants to read that a girl in the US is obsessed with drama, eh...that's nothing to hide.

I do boggle at people who post pics of themselves outside of flock.

That's OK, it's at least going to minimize things. For me it's because:

a. I started getting spammy replies. Three is enough, IMO, and while screening anon posts is enough to at least take care of some problems, if I am minimized in searches, it's also less likely.

b. It's the recent strike-out scare where the group apparently google-searched LJ. Now, nothing I've ever posted is even remotely likely to get me into LJ's bad graces and get me deleted but who knows if next time they'll get poed about fanfic or links to subs or who knows what.

Most likely it's a knee-jerk reaction on my part and I'll uncheck even the 'minimize search' button because I only post fannish stuff and like some of the replies I got through people google-searching or whatever, but for now, I am a bit jittery.

Thank you! I don't mind people being able to see stuff (it's all fannish meanderings anyway) but minimizing does help.
