Largely about It Started with a Kiss
Sep. 22nd, 2006 03:06 pmOh no. I am moving this weekend have discovered that my DSL service won't transfer until Ocotber 6. That's almost two weeks. I think I'll die of deprivation. Good thing I already have so many things dled/bought to watch (All of Sang Doo, Chun-Hyang, Sam Soon, BDNM and the rest of Long Vacation) otherwise I'd go spare.
Silence ep 8 subs are out!
In other news, I am in the middle of ep 9 of It Started with a Kiss (schedule has been very busy lately) and I am so madly in love it's not funny.
Oh my. This show is CRACK.
Poor Zhi Shu! He is so ragingly jealous but he doesn't realize it. I love the bit where he overhears XQ talk on the phone to Dreads Guy (henceforth abbreviated to DG) where she is pretending to be mushy with him because DG wants to impress annoying princess girl who is after ZS (henceforth abrreviated as PG). And XG doesn't see him but OMG. Coupled with PG's earlier comments about XQ and DG, ZS is totally horribly hopelessly jealous. And he is acting out towards XQ (tells her the food she cooked is awful) and picks on her about her underwear choice and yet he doesn't realize why. I love his sitting there going, utterly confused "What's the matter with me?" LOVE. I am also amused that XQ has rather a thick skin and sort of shrugs off his acting out as ZS is just being ZS.
And the more he protests he is not interested, the clearer it is that he is totally smitten. When he says even if they were on the same bed he wouldn't be interested? Heeee. Liar. Why DID he think of that scenario, huh? :) That's because he would be interested. Very. (OMG, I need ISWAK smutfic. The boy's got to be as clueless as she is about sex stuff anyway, however many articles he'd read on it).
And then he plays tennis against DG like he wants to murder dreads guy. Seriously hurt him and rip him to shreds. And that only escalates when Princess Girl yells "Xiang Qin's" (though they aren't) encouragements. And then he asks princess girl out on a date because XQ is 'canoodling' with dreads guy and he clearly wants to show her it means nothing to him. He is totally raging and confused and a bit freaked by what it all means. He is acting like he is five and it's adorable.
But of course DG and XQ follow the date into the theater. In an utterly hilarious scene, XQ uses nefarious methods (such as spilling popcorn) to separate ZS and princess girl whenever princess girl tries to hold hands or whatever (significantly, ZS shows as much interest in her as if she was a plank). But what I really like (and why I adore XQ) is she ends up telling DG that if ZS really does prefer princess girl, he will have her support. She really is genuinely in love with ZS and he is damn lucky to have her. She might not be as bright as princess girl, and she lacks poise and is a dreadful cook, but she loves him with all her heart and she puts his well being ahead of her own, and that's a damn rare thing to find in anyone. If he uses that vaunted brain of his, he'll never let her go.
And as the scene in the restaurant after the movie proves, princess girl is boring and annoying. When she and ZS are together, there is just dullness. Also, she clearly doesn't know about the real him or cares. Basically, she won't care what he is like as long as he is brainy, personality doesn't matter. She is in 'like' (because love would be too strong for her level of interest) with a projection of self not ZS. She has already put him into a preconcieved file and even when he says things that don't fit with that neat pattern she ignores them, as when he tells her he doesn't know what he wants to do once he graduates. Unlike XQ who has no expectations of him and just likes him for himself and who was all encouraging about pressure of Uni and who is probably the only person he felt comfortable to tell that to. Their whole conversation shows that.
And then DG and XQ bump into gangsters (who DG thinks he hired to enact a 'I am so brave' scene for princess girl's benefit but in reality are real). And princess girl and ZS are there. And OMG! ZS grabs XQ's hand, without a second thought, it's purely instinctive. And they run and XQ thinks 'maybe he made a mistake in the heat of the moment' (did she watch Meteor Garden recently or something?) but come on, if that was the case he would have noticed and dropped your hand, clueless girl!
And she asks him about it. And I love that the first thing out of his mouth is 'Would you rather it was dreads guy?' The boy is so jealous. And when she tells him no (I love that she doesn't play games) but asks ZS wouldn't he prefer to be with princess girl? So he tells her up until the movie theater (where he noticed her) he thought she and Senior (DG) were together but now he knows the truth. And that's as close as he can come to admitting he was so incredibly jealous (because for one, I don't think he realizes it himself).
So she tells him that she is sorry but she couldn't bear his going on date with Princess and OMG OMG OMG! The delighted look on his face!!!!! It's like he let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding and he actively has to work to keep his face under control. And he asks her out though not in so many words ('where would you like to go?'). I am officially dead.
And they end up on one of those rental boats in a city park lake (I find it interesting when he lets her pick because he says he doesn't know where fun places are). But he is still clueless about his feelings. His 'wondering why on earth I asked you out' (when she asks him what he is thinking about) isn't meant to be hurtful, I think it's genuine. He is so confused.
And then climbing out of the boat they keep falling into the water. And I think the whole falling into the water thing is planned by him. In any event it's hilarious. And then he keeps pulling her back in and she is 'you are doing this on purpose, aren't you?' and you can actually see him grin quickly and hide it. EEEE. I repeat. EEEEEEEEE! She actually makes him be spontaneous and have fun and lose control. And that is why she is good for him.
Also, soaking wet ZS is hot.
In case you are considering whether It Started with a Kiss is worth your time, I present some pictorials.
The reason I love this OTP. Their first kiss exemplifies it all. It's in the middle of an argument, it shocks him almost as much as it shocks her, and it's both hot and funny!

Date: 2006-09-22 08:12 pm (UTC)But I am going to watch my three episodes now - and who needs sleep!! I will wait until Silence finishes and then watch it for I like it so much that my heart can be broken otherwise. ISWTK doesn't look like it can have a bad ending.
"The Hospital" apparently has some semi-nude scene , but I think it isn't Jerry. :(

Date: 2006-09-22 10:19 pm (UTC)Talk about a waste! :P
The MU thing is weird and has happened to me before. I finally caved in and bought a month premium only to discover that I won't have DSL for two weeks which is really annoying (especially since I just bought a new external harddrive and was going to engage in an orgy of downloading).
I really hope you like ISWAK *anxiously bites nails* I rec giving it a chance even if it doesn't strike at first because it's a long series (20 eps) so it takes its time to really get going. I liked it from the first five opening minutes (you'll see what I mean) because it was just so deliciously light but I didn't REALLY fall for it like mad until sometime in ep 7. It's pretty good about character development.
Plus, the OTP makes me grin from ear to ear. Admittedly, I am biased because the male lead is over 6'2" (188 cm) when the female lead is under 5'3" (160 cm) and I am a sucker for a tiny girl big guy OTPs.

Date: 2006-09-22 10:43 pm (UTC)His mother makes me laugh and laugh.
I knew I was going to like it from the moment she was holding out the letter, prepared for every possible response and he just walked by her. And she fell, with her arms still stuck in the air. I knew I was going to love it and not just like when he paused what he was saying to someone else to come back to her and ask her 'Don't you have anything better to do with your life?' and that theme tune started playing. I was gooooone.
Someone on jdramas started uploading HD ISWAK eps recently. They won't be in the memories yet, but they'll be under the tags. I think at least the first 6 eps are in HD so I rec getting those first as dl is faster...

Date: 2006-09-22 10:46 pm (UTC)Also, the idea of no you for 2 weeks is depressing(you'll iss my end-of-Damo squeeing or sobbing, whichever it is...) but when I moved back in December, I was told 2 weeks, and it only took a few days. So, you know...maybe...did you get Verizon, by any chance?

Yup, it's Verizon.

Date: 2006-09-22 11:14 pm (UTC)I love their interactions so much, the way he can be so snarky and exasperated, but really, he's just ROFLMAO underneath it all. Plus, the irrational jealousy is always a good thing in this kind of fluffy, light-hearted drama... Ooh, I can't to you get to the other stuff... heeee!

Date: 2006-09-22 11:42 pm (UTC)I know! I've been having very busy day and to get home and be able to watch even a bit of this takes all the tiredness away and makes me grin like an idiot.
the way he can be so snarky and exasperated, but really, he's just ROFLMAO underneath it all
Exactly. I just love how she is a never-ending source of amusement to him (in a good way, not nasty way) because before her he was all so serious and studious and everything. He has a very good, understated, dry sense of humor actually, but it never got brought out before he met her. I am still cracking up about his 'where now, homeless child?' when she can't find her father. Not that the line is particularly funny, but the way he says it is so...so...so... *can't think of a good word* It's an odd thing to say, but she makes him enjoy life rather than just move through it undisturbed but not living.
There will eventually be a tiny bit of angst (otherwise it wouldn't be a twdrama!)
Oh no. *anxious* I learned my lesson with 'Full House' where I was 'I want more angst, more angst is going to be here, yay' but when the angst hit (and it wasn't even that severe by dorama standards, let alone K-drama standards), I couldn't deal with it because I'd fallen for the characters so hard and was 'I take it all back.' So here I am not even wishing for it :P

Date: 2006-09-23 12:10 am (UTC)I love that part, and I have never been able to figure out why. It's one of my most-rewatched scenes of the series (and I have rewatched SO much of it, it's almost an addiction) and it's just that one line that always gets me... He's so... teasing, yet serious, yet exasperated and bored, but also kind of expectant, because as soon as she's all kinda flaily about not knowing, he's like, okay! Let's go to my house! But not, because he's all about the repression and the facade that he's eternally annoyed/put out by her, when really, he was almost eager to take her home. Hee!

I know! His excuse of course is so transperent you could you it for a mirror ("my Mom will chop me into 8 pieces if I leave you here." As if he didn't want to take her, he'd be scared of him Mom. Yeah, right.) But he is so busy pretending even to himself that this is all this is.
I think ZS is king of little suppressed grins. I love 'em. My favorite is when she asks him if he is pulling her into the water on purpose and you see him smile really quick and you realize yes he is. He is just so amused around her.

Everything I talk about is always subbed as I know about 10 words in Japanese, Korean or Mandarin combined.
Do try it! *tempts*
