Does anyone know what happened to [livejournal.com profile] missmarch? She seems to have deleted her LJ. Is she OK?

Also, oh my mighty and knowledgeable f-list. I have a favor to ask. I recently woke up to the fact I am a modern music ignoramus. And I know most people on my f-list both love and have good taste in music. So please rec me. I am open to anything except country, rap and hip-hop. The kind of music they have on Roswell and Veronica Mars and Buffy would be great (or any bands from those shows, since I love the songs but have no idea what they are. Especially the ones tha play during Logan and Veronica's dance or the 'epic' scene). Any other recs would be absolutely great too. [livejournal.com profile] winterspel, I know you love music. Any recs? Anyone, anyone, Bueller?

Okay, that's strange. She posted a comment on my post TODAY....10 hours ago. I hope everything's okay. :/

I'm a bit of a music ignoramus too. As far as I'm concerned, music peaked in 1995 and it's all downhill since then. It may be worth starting with the soundtracks for those shows (I know Buffy at least has a soundtrack CD released) and then exploring further if there's any particular groups that caught your fancy.

Coldplay has always had the corner market on moody, mellow music. While their second CD had the dickens played out of it on the radio, their third I haven't gotten bored with yet.

Some of MY favorites though are All American Rejects and The Killers, two upbeat bands. The Killers are just addictive, especially "Somebody Told Me". The Frey is also a great band as is Lifehouse, which out of the whole group, I think you might like the best.

I don't really know if she's considered old news yet or not, but I LOVE Anna Nalick. She's famous for "Breathe 2 AM," but I think there are other songs on her album ( Wreck of the Day ) that are ten times better. Her whole cd has been on rotation in my player for a while now.

And because pimpage here is needed, there's always my Manoel Felciano. His stuff isn't actually released yet, it's floating around for free download on his MySpace, so if you'd like, I'll send a song of his to you. I'm thinking "Another Day" because it's about Penelope waiting for Odysseus and it's beautiful and different and you might like it and any more subordinate clauses will make this a run-on sentence. :)

I hardly ever listen to the radio - artists more hit me by word of mouth, so suggestions are always a wonderful thing!

And this one, which I actually posted in my journal without even seeing this post, but then didn't think about linking directly to you...! In any case, if you're curious, here 'tis:

Wake Up

I say this song is my favorite of his, and I'm not exactly sure why. It's sweet and catchy, which is exactly what it's intended to be, and it just makes me smile. /spam

I'm going to have to also rec Anna Nalick, The Killers and Lifehouse. They are awesome.

If you like TV soundtracks, you absolutely cannot go wrong with the VM soundtrack and the Grey's Anatomy one is also AMAZING. It's a great way to get a taste of several different sounds without buying a whole lot of music.

Personally, I would have to rec SNOW PATROL, JOHN MAYER, THE REINDEER SECTION, DAMIEN RICE, PANIC! AT THE DISCO, OUR LADY PEACE (anything from the Clumsy album is awesome), MATT NATHANSON, ARI HEST, RON SEXSMITH, TEITUR, and DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL. Right now Snow Patrol hasn't left my CD player for 2 weeks and nothing's changing on that front. I freaking love them so they're my first pick. I have more female artists that I love too, but for some reason, I can't remember their names right now. I'll get back to you!

Snow Patrol are AMAZING. I was hesitant at first, but really really awesome - mellow, romantic, rocking, sad... it's everything you want from music. And the lyrics are also gorgeous.

Our Lady Peace is a great band. I'll second that one.

This is probably predictable to anyone doomed with me on their f-list ;) but - Muse would be my first rec. That is, if you can stand really over-the-top, theatrical rock. They're classically influenced and all about the gradiose, virtuoso epic-type junk, which I know isn't for everyone, but needless to say I nearly bleed this band. Absolution is probably their most accessible disc.

Other favorites of mine are Mute Math - very melodic and chill, but more upbeat and kinetic than bands like Coldplay - Switchfoot, who have a great deal of heart... and Franz Ferdinand, if you wanna go neo-retro. Those are all good bets, I'd say. :) A lot of good (and fairly recent) stuff out there, surprisingly.

Music res... wow.
Ok, you can first check my last.fm to see the bands that I listen to the most. Death Cab for Cutie is my beloved. Um, what kind of mood do you want for your music? Because I have chill indie-rock recs, obnoxious British rock recs, some Latin recs, then some far more upbeat popish recs and also some straight out rock recs.
Youth Group is another band I'm in love with these days, in the first category. Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins are also awesome, and sometimes overlap with the upbeat popish category. Sufjan Steven's album Illinois is also amazing. Stars has a cool album called Set Yourself on Fire. You may know Sigur Ros from your time in Iceland already, but they're really cool mellow music (even if it's not in English)
Obnoxious British (or other UK countries...) Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Cheifs, Maximo Park, Hot Hot Heat and the Arctic Monkeys.
Latin recs... Juanes. Probably the most accesible (but I'll admit I like Shakira singing in Spanish). Also, Mana.
Upbeat popish stuff... Five For Fighting, Tilly and the Wall, Tegan and Sara, The Thrills (sort of... they're upbeat and depressing at the same time)
Straight out rock... Right, you probably know REM and the Red Hot Chili Peppers already, but I still love them. :) The Goo Goo Dolls have a new album, and I love them quite dearly.
Random stuff: Metric, The Dresden Dolls, The Faint (techno-ish dance punk), Panic! At the Disco (similar), Flogging Molly (Irish Punk... so much fun)

Right. That's enough for now. Tell me which ones you like, and I'll give you more recommendations in that direction. I listen to WAY too much music. I've been listening to some new indie stuff that I rather like, too.

There's some good and interesting music up there!

As for me, it's three in the a.m. and I'm just getting home to see this, so bear with me for not giving this more thought. My best advice to you at this moment is to check out my '2005: My Year In Music' post that I wrote a while back. It was all music that I was into last year that is a combo of older and modern stuff. Also, I must, must, must recommend the Veronica Mars soundtrack & the Garden State soundtrack, just off the top of my head, as they are both terrific collections of great tunes. Also, you must visit The Music of Veronica Mars for a listing of all the music played in the show - there is a lot of good stuff in there and last I checked, there were even some legal downloads in there.

As you know, my taste is quite diverse. Right now I'm addicted to Japanese pop and rock, but tomorrow it could be gods know what. ;) If I can think of anything more coherent later, I'll let you know, but this should get you started. :)

I can give you really elitist music recs, of the kind that will get you approving head-nods from well-versed hipsters and djs and record store clerks, but I'm not actually sure you'd like all that many of them. :-P

Ok, that sounds very tantalizing.
I've always wondered though... what exactly are hipsters?

I don't think I can be too much help here... but I do have Buffy and Roswell soundtracks so if you need them, tell me.

I second everyone who recommended Coldplay. Always a good choice.

I could give you random pop recommendations, but I find that when it comes to pop, people either hate or love certain bands/singers, so it's hard to tell what you'd like if I don't know what your tastes are...

I find Coldplay pretty boring - *very* Beatles derived, and kind of Boomer comfort-food, IMO.

I'm listening to Death Cab For Cutie (smart lyrics!), Flogging Molly (Irish hardcore), Goldfrapp (sexy smart dance music), Franz Ferdinand (retro-80s dance pop), and Train (more with the smart).

Snow Patrol, Goo Goo Dolls and Anna Nalick, too -

Okay, I'm back! I have three soundtracks, one for each season of Roswell, but to start, here's my "Ultimate Mix" along with the episodes each song was in (these are from the original TV version, not the DVD). All the artists on this mix are awesome in and of their own right and you can't go wrong with any of their other stuff (usually):

Here with Me by Dido
Run by Collective Soul (ID)
Crash Into Me by Dave Matthews Band (Pilot)
Save Yourself by Sense Field (CDB)
Everything by Lifehouse (MITC)
Colorblind - Counting Crows (Missing)
Let Me In - Save Ferris (HW)
Walk On - U2 (Departure)
Closer - Better Than Ezra (Control)
Everything - Jill Phillips (HTOHL)
Made to Last - Semisonic (Monsters)
We Haven't Turned Around - Gomez (HW)
I Shall Believe - Sheryl Crow (EOTW)
Perfect Memory - Remy Zero (Departure)
Fear - Sarah McLachlan (Pilot)
Shining Light - Ash (Grad

I agree with most of [livejournal.com profile] sinclair_furie's taste in music.

Death Cab for Cutie is not my best beloved, but if you like them, check out the Postal Service as well. They are both led by the same guy, and the lyrics are really clever.

I love Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins - again, both share the lead singer, and they are all awesome live. Rilo Kiley I think is more pop-like, while JL+WT have a more gospel/country/ballad feel.

SAY YES! TO SUFJAN STEVENS. He is my best beloved. And don't just stop at his Illinois album. His debut, A Sun Came, is my personal favorite, although by listening to the music you can tell he's a developing artist. There's also Enjoy Your Rabbit, an instrumental experimentation on the different animals of the Chinese zodiac, Say Yes! to M!Ch!Gan, and Seven Swans. He's got some really different influences (Chinese/Celtic/gospel, anyone?) and clever literary references (Carl Sandburg makes an appearance in Illinois, and there's also references to Flannery O'Connor, William Wordsworth, etc. on other albums).

Sigur Ros is an Icelandic band, but they sing mostly in a made-up languange they call Hopelandic. They're very... well... they aren't for everyone, but give them a try.

And if you like Flogging Molly, then definitely listen to the Dropkick Murphys.

My random picks: A.F.I., Nine Inch Nails, Billy Joel (always a Long Island favorite), the Beatles (classic!), Bjork, Brand New (some of their lyrics are priceless), Bright Eyes, Cake, Cat Power, Counting Crows, Damien Rice, David Bowie, Donovan, Interpol, Jack Johnson (love Jack Johnson), Manu Chao, moe., Nick Drake, Rasputina, Regina Spektor (raised in Russia and a classically trained pianist), Seu Jorge, the Shins, Talking Heads, Weezer, Wilco, Xiu Xiu, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

FERRIS.FERRIS BUUEELER. Okay. Now that I have recovered from my compulsive Ferris Bueller rant, let me get down to recommendations. Hmm-I love Dar Williams, John Meyer, and two of Goldfrapp's Cds, not to mention soft indie rock like Iron and Wine and Kings of Convenience. Hem and Nickel Creek are good too, although Hem is better overall. Jazz is what I listen to least but in that genre Michael Buble and Kenny G rock-particularly Michael Buble. Have fun with all your new "modern music". Note-most old music is better but a lot of modern is still fabulous.
