dangermousieI have been reading Fruits Basket scanlations again, as my desperation eagerness to find out what happenes overcame my instinctive dislike for scanlations (reading manga on line gives me headaches literally).
And I was enjoying it a lot. And then we came to chapters 105-106 and I died and went to shipper fangirl heaven. My thoughts processes could be summed up as something like OMGHARURINOMGOMGOMG. With a healthy doze of 'stab Akito in the face, someone.'
Fruits Basket has a lot of storylines, some of which I love, some of which I am blah about (Yuki and the student counsel never really grabs me. I like Yuki. I like student counsel guys, but I find myself skimming those pages to get to the next Kyo or Hatori or what not bit). But the one story that gives me palpitations and makes me make weird noises at my book (or computer as the case may be) is that of Haru and Rin. The only one that has a chance to knock the hyperventilation to even a higher notch is any time the mangaka gets into Kyo issues. Because Kyo >>>>> everything. Ahem.
For the two of you who are actually reading this post though you've never seen/read any Fruits Basket, Haru and Rin are one of major FB otps. They are both cursed by different Zodiac spirits (ox for Haru and horse for Rin), and have been best friends since they were children, when Rin's abusive parents finally sent her to the hospital. When they were callous to her even while she was sick, kid!Haru (who is two years younger than Rin btw) happened to be there, and having a protective streak a mile wide and hot buttons about injustice, he was the only person who stood up for Rin. They've been friends ever since and he's protected and saved her repeatedly when she was falling apart.
Haru'a basically been in love with her ever since they were children and once they grew up he confessed his feelings to her and they went on ahead and had a secret relationship despite the threat of Akito, the psycho head of the family who is emotionally, physically, and borderline sexually (or maybe not so borderline) abusive and possessive of the male zodiacs and goes berserk if any of them enter into relationships. On the outside, Rin is tough and brittle and gorgeous. But deep down, like a lot of abused children, Rin feels damaged and unworthy of someone as 'good' and loving as Haru (I adore Haru because he can be totally spacy but he is incredibly mature and completely kind, but he has the 'Black' part of his personality which is totally snarky and destructive) even though Haru would completely fall apart without her. Anyway, even though Haru doesn't know until later, Akito finds out about relationship and goes berserk, especially since Akito hates Rin the most, as the prettiest of the female zodiacs. Akito corners Rin when she is alone and plays his favorite game of whose fault was the relationship. Rin is desperate to protect Haru who's always protected her and says hers, ending up being pushed out of second story window for her trouble. While in the hospital, she breaks up with Haru to protect him, but Haru seems incapable of giving up. And Rin is also trying to feverishly find out how to break the curse of the zodiacs because she wants to save Haru from it and is willing to do anything for it. Her latest attempt got her Akito's attention again and she's disappeared, though everyone just thinks she's in a hospital. Until the events in the scans below. *dies*
Here are the scans from chapters 105 and 106 and 107 (volume 18) which made me die. Haru finds out the truth and confronts Akito (and Akito almost dies, YES). And Haru and Rin. *swoon*

SEQUENCE ONE:
Favorite Sequence No. 1, aka 'events leading to Akito ending up almost dead'
1. Haru finds out Rin still loves him (from Hiro):
2. Kureno finds out Rin has been locked up and gets the key from a servant to rescue her (oh God, I love Kureno so much. Way braver than me, seeing what Akito does to people who disobey. Though the fact he is in his late twenties and has been Akito's 'boy thing' for so long, but Uo is the first time he's fallen in love and felt like a person? *stabs Akito in the face*)
3. And this is happening at the same time (the Hiro revelation and Kureno rescue) so intercuts:
4. This intercut between Haru and Rin is gorgeous:
5. OMG OmG omG. Haru is stalking to confront the super scary Akito, because he is driven almst insane by finding out Akito pushed Rin out of the window, and that Rin suffered this to protect him. Akito, bitch, you don't mess with the One True Love of a really protective guy, seriously. You might be God, but he just might snap (serioualy, I love how he can totally stand up to Akito for Rin when Akito has been so vile to him and he just took it because of the stupid Akito is God thing):
6. HELL YEAH. And I love that he isn't 'Black' here. It's normal Haru. Just pushed to the wall:
7. At this point he still doesn't know about Rin and cat's room. *waits for the storm*
8. I want to stab Akito in the face. The way Akito asks Haru whether he is kind to Rin because he pities her. *stab* (But I wonder if because Haru is a favorite, Akito is giving him a way out. Akito desperately needs to believe Rin (or any other woman for the zodiacs) is unlovable):
9. You go, Haru! Of course, the last person to say something like that ended up half-blind, so I hope you brought some weapons with you:
10. Yay! Haru figuring out Akito is at the root of Rin's disappearance:
11. Ummm, Akito. Why the fuck should he care?
12. Oh God. I have rarely wanted to murder Akito more than here, when she tries to somehow twist it into Haru's fault bad things happened to Rin:

14. Eeeee, he is remembering her nightmares:
15. Akito does abuser logic again. *stabs*
16. And Haru snaps. Oh yes, please strangle her:
17. Dude, flashbacking to childhood and how he wanted to protect her is....guuuuh:

20. Oh Kureno! I love you. I love it when he tells Haru to go and not look back and just go to Rin. (Is it because you cannot go to Uo, Kureno?) After all, Haru is still young and Kureno has what, 10 years on him?
21. OK, the fact that the first thing Rin said was 'Haru' is... *dies*
22. And meanwhile poor Rin is in the hospital:
23. And Haru is breaking down eeeeeek! Because Rin is hurt and he is thinking it's his fault and eeeeee!
SEQUENCE TWO:
Haru and Rin finally get back together! This sequence starts after Rin is in the hospital, after being rescued by Kureno (Uo, your man did good!!!!) remembering what is happened. She is delirious and wandering around.
1. Rin is tricked by Akito's equally horrible mother. If Rin fetches something from Akito's room, Akito's Mom will tell her how to break the curse (Guuuuuh, the whole 'push your loved one away to protect him/her while still fixated on them' is such a thing of mine):
2. And Akito finds her and chops off her gorgeous hair and locks her up in the dark horrible 'cat's room' (where Kyo is supposed to spend the rest of his life when he turns 18 btw). And being a horrible sadist asks Rin whether she prefers to stay in that room forever or to be let out and then Akito would blind Haru (Akito has a horrible eye fixation btw, what is with that? First he blinded Hatori in one eye, now this?)
3. There is no doubt which one Rin would choose:
4. Meanwhile, while Rin is still falling apart, Akito's Mom mocks Rin to her servants for being useless *blood boils*
5. OMG. *cries* (OK, I confess. It's not just a cute little emoticon thingy. I did cry). Rin gives up figuring out what's real and decides if everything is a dream, then she'd like to dream about Haru:
6. *dies* This is probably my favorite panel:
7. *cries some more* She is apologizing:
8. 'If you don't return to my side, I'll be lonely.' Oh Haru. Did I overuse *dies*? Too bad.
9. Did I mention the sniffles I had reading this? Yeah, I am crying over a flipping manga:
