Fushigi Yuugi love

I am undoubtedly easy, but I fell for Fushigi Yuugi. Maybe it's the fact that FY doesn't really take itself seriously all the time but has moments of sheer post-modern glee (the bit when Tamahome, Miaka and Yui pause in the middle of deadly danger to debate puns is priceless). Or maybe it's the really beautiful character designs. Or maybe it's because I know that if I was 15 and catapulted into a strange medieval-type world I wouldn't do half so well as Miaka. Sure she yells for Tamahome (but hey, why would a 15 year old modern girl know how to fight? At least she tries) and she is a little clueless and she isn't a genius (though she isn't dumb). In those circumstances, I don't think I'd do better. (I do like Miaka and think she is sweet. She is literally willing to die to save those she loves and she certainly tries her best to fight and she is funny. Of course, this now means I have to hide from katranna and crumpeteer. And katranna knows where I live, too. Oi). Or maybe I am just a sucker for heroic fantasy. Or maybe I am just sappy enough to like Miaka/Tamahome (when he tells her how he feels in ep 11, I admit I kinda...melted. And I am not afraid to say it :P).

In conclusion, there is an even more pressing reason why I love Fushigi Yuugi

Why?


Tamahome. I can see why Miaka is smitten:













Hotohori. The most gorgeous of all of FY bishounen. I just can't pick between him and Tamahome. If there was ever a call for an anime threesome.













Mitsukake. Seriously, what is with this world? Are there any ugly people?






Tasuki. Red hair!







Nakago. Yes, he is evil evil evil. But on the plus side, he's pretty.






Shallow, me?

P.S. With some tweaking this would have made a really good fantasy live-action show.

I do have some sympathy on why Nakago turned out the way he did, because really, his childhood would have screwed up a lot of people.

My threesome choice would be Hotohori and Tasuki. There's just something so endearing about fiesty Tasuki.

Don't worry, there are enough people in the world who want to strangle Miaka that I don't feel alone.

The mangaka (manga artist) is famous for drawing extraordinarily awesome 'bishounen' (pretty boys). With reason :)

If you like this, another one of her mangas has been animated: Ayashi No ceres (Ceres: Celestial Legend). It's very good though a lot more disturbing than FY. Think an anime, mystically heavy Buffy. It's awesome. Plus, Toya (the main male character in that one)=SEX.

Ceres has a huge body count.

The main characters (good guys, not talking about bad guys) are:

Aya
Toya
Aki (Aya's twin)
Yuhi (Aya's bodyguard)
Chidori (girl who crushes on Yuhi)

Chidori and Aki die. Yuhi and Aya are alive. And Aya is pregnant with Toya's baby. It's a rarity in anime, but there it is :) In Fushigi Yuugi, in the sequel 'movies' (which I don't care for but people differ on them) Miaka and Tamahome actually have a kid too, so while rare, it does happen in anime. Toya's status is...uncertain. I can't really explain why without spoiling everything and going into a much too detailed an explanation, but he believes he has a short time left to live only (though that shot of them on the bench is from the very end). I was very upset about that, but found out that in sequel novels, it's been 3+ years but he is still around so I calmed down.

I am definitely doing a picspam post.
