I have apprehensive apprehension
Dec. 20th, 2011 07:54 pmFlower Boy Ramyun Shop wasn't my thing but I wasn't ranty about it or anything.
But now I learned it is only the first of a series of dramas centering around Flower Boys. There is an upcoming one about a rock boy flower band and so on (janitor flower boys?).
UGH.
I mean, what can I say about a drama which has no driven narrative point or even a need to make you laugh, but is pretty much a drama to make you buy things and which has no selling point in any promos or in its entire existence, other than 'pretty androgynous boys! look at them! and buy our stuff!'
Not every drama has to have something profound to say. I've enjoyed plenty of fluff. But the utter lack of any animating principle other than "cute people selling stuff" belongs in a commercial and nowhere else.
Plus, I have this horrifying fear of kdramas turning into jdramas and turning into a sea of shrill material with the depth of a puddle geared not to strain the meager talents of various pop idols. (There are still good jdramas, of course, but the amount of the jdrama of the kind I mention is ubiquitous). Ugh.
This has been your rant of the day.

Date: 2011-12-21 01:25 am (UTC)That said, a drama full of pretty boys and no plot is no fun. Or, it could be fun, but. . .with Korean dramas - I want a plot. The synopsis for this drama is literally: Shut Up Flower Boy Band is centered around a high school band known as Eye Purification. The drama depicts friendship, love of youths and their passion for music. Yeah. . .
Interesting, it comes out the same day as Dream High 2, which follows idol stars who are about to have nervous breakdowns and troubled students from Kirin High School of Art.
If I had to pick one, I'd go with DH2.

Date: 2011-12-21 01:22 pm (UTC)At first, the outrageous situations actually worked for it. The funny and idiotic situations were a good start. But now... it's ridiculous!
After about 4 episodes of ridiculousness I had enough. But here I am, watching episode 13 and still hoping that they'll prove me wrong and start showing some semblance of plot. Pretty boys fighting over a girl? Not enough to make a drama. And it's not even believable when the girl is such an idiot.
Urgh... more idol dramas coming up. Will this mark the end of my drama obsession? :(
