One of the things I always loved was Alfred Noyes' poem The Highwayman and Loreena McKennitt's song rendition of it...

I am not really in a drama mood right now...I kinda feel like digging out my Sir Walter Scott instead. No idea why, but I want something period and English. Maybe I'll finish Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton's Paul Clifford (which would make the most awesome mini - why are there nowhere near as many English period shows as are Korean ones?)

I've been reading The Count of Monte Cristo recently--no clue why, or what itch it's scratching, but it's a lot of fun. Those itches are weird, though, where you're hankering for something specific and nothing else will do. I wonder what triggers them?

Thanks for sharing the vid! Love both the singer and the poem but I've never seen this music video before.

I used to be obsessed with it ages ago :)

I know! Basically, I just finished these novels set in 1715 UK and now I want more of the same. I'd prefer a mini but there is pretty much nada. Boo!

Try Stevenson's Kidnapped and Catriona, perhaps? Kidnapped has nothing of the romance but Catriona, which is harder to find in print but available for free on line, has a pretty decent one. I'd thought I reviewed it when I read it back in February, but apparently all I said was "I read a good bit of Robert Louis Stevenson's Catriona over dinner, and it is fantastic. Whoever said Stevenson couldn't write women needs to read this book. (Also, I've got to admit to a small measure of glee that so far they all seem to agree with me: David Balfour is a stud!)"

Rafael Sabatini also has some awesome stuff if you're in the mood for swashbuckling, though I can't remember anything in particular about the Jacobites.

Oh yeah, I read both Kidnapped and Catriona in Russian translation ages ago. Loved them. (Catriona more than Kidnapped because am a shipper).

I adore adore adore Sabatini. My favorite of his is the little-known Fortune's Fool (set during Restoration) but I love all the ones I got my hands on.

Also, Samuel Shellabarger (Captain from Castille and Prince of Foxes are two of my fave things ever) and Jeffery Farnol (Definite Object is my ultimate pleasure desert-island book).

I haven't yet read Fortune's Fool, but I've been working my way through all the Sabatini I could download to my Kindle. Scaramouche has been my favorite so far, just for the glory of its opening line: "He was born with a gift for laughter and a sense that the world was mad." Apparently Sabatini had that line engraven on his tombstone, too.

I haven't read the other authors you mention--must get on that without delay!

Jeffery Farnol was very prolific and his stuff is hit and miss but when he's on, he's on.

Shellabarger = my obsession.

Fortune's Fool is one of my fave books ever. I love Scaramouche, but not as much as I do Captain Blood.

*Happy sigh* I love Loreena McKennitt's music, and I'd kill to see her live. You have very kindly reminded me that there's obviously plenty of her stuff to watch on Youtube (thanks for that).

I've even taught dancing to her music - and I'm a bellydancer. :D
