One of the things I always loved was Alfred Noyes' poem The Highwayman and Loreena McKennitt's song rendition of it...

I am not really in a drama mood right now...I kinda feel like digging out my Sir Walter Scott instead. No idea why, but I want something period and English. Maybe I'll finish Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton's Paul Clifford (which would make the most awesome mini - why are there nowhere near as many English period shows as are Korean ones?)

Youtube is the best thing ever! I just found the title song of Phantom of the Opera in Russian! Performed at a concert by two Russian pop singers (I guess that would be the term) at a concert. And one of them is Alexandr Malinin, who I am unhip enough to really really love.

The phaaaaantom of the opera is here...in Russian )

OMG! Further cross-culture shock. Muslim Magomayev singing 'Love Story' in English! (His 60s song 'Beauty Queen' is one my faves):

Song here )

In case you are wondering, I found Malinin singing his normal stuff on youtube. It's awesome.

Alexandr Malinin )

And since I am on a Russian song kick, here are some more songs, sung by Lev Leshenko, 1970s (???) singer. I am old-fashioned so I really like them as I grew up around them. Plus, I have a huge thing for WWII songs and some of them are.

Songs here )

Oh God, I love Soviet songs. I can't help it. I just got a whole bunch of burned CDs of them.

More here, I'll be ETAing them for a while )

One of my favorite songs 'Prekrasnoye dalyoko' from the movie 'Visitoress (yeah, it's the feminine of visitor' from the future' based on a novel by a famous Russian YY and adul scifi author Kir Bulyichev. Gosh, I still love him, and I loved the movie and the song (the boy lead in this one gets tortured to protect the girl. Are we sensing a pattern in my fictional boyfriends from childhood.) I still sing this song all the time, and I remember singing it from childhood. I have so many associations with it and even my husband recognizes it. And they played it at our wedding.

Song here )

Not a Soviet but a modern MV. I really like it.

here it is )

is "Love Can't Happen" from Broadway adaptation of "Grand Hotel" (if you ever want to read a depressing but good book, read Vicki Baum's 1930s novel or the watch 1932 Best Picture winner).

One of the saddest things in the story is the quite doomed love between an aging ballerina and an aristocrat who had been reduced to crime to pay for his lifestyle.

Well, one of my all time favorite Broadway songs is the one the Baron sings to the Ballerina. Just because, the lyrics are behind the cut.
