I have started the anime Wolf's Rain, which I know is a huge favorite of [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore and [livejournal.com profile] crumpeteer.

One ep in and I have no idea what is going on, though it's clear Kiba will be the main character, but I am so so SO sold. A fantasy/postapocalyptic society of some sort. Characters hunted for their otherness. Gorgeous animation. Looks like a complicated story. Yay.

Anyway, are there any ships in this one? Fine if not, but if there are, I don't want to ship the noncanon thing :)

Also, if I was capable of a 'walk of shame,' this would be it, walking to the checkout counter at a bookstore with a book with this cover. Luckily I am not. Yeah, I am rereading all of Absolute Boyfriend. Seriously though, I really like AB because it's both incredibly shoujo and yet at the same time it pokes fun at the shoujo trope: of course the heroine's boyfriend will be drop-dead-gorgeous, willing to risk life and limb for her smallest whim, utterly loyal (Night refuses advances of girl who kept stealing all of Riiko's potential dates), talented, devoted to extreme measure. Yeah, he is all that. Because he is a robot programmed to do that! Heh. And it makes Riiko overlook the very real and very cool, if very flawed Soji. Of course, Night develops a personality and the whole thing is quite shoujo, but I do like that there is that layer there.

Also, because I was in a bookstore, I flipped through the Battle Royale manga. Bad idea. The novel was one of the most brilliant things I've ever read, but also one of the most scarring. It gave me nightmares (not literally) for weeks and I am never rereading it again. The manga's art is gorgeous and in a way it's a little less diturbing because you are not in the characters' head, but it's still horrrific. But I still ended up reading most of vol 12 because it all dealt with Sugimura and Kotohiki, and Sugimura's story was always the one that hit me the worst in the whole book. He spent the entire Game just searching for her in order to make sure she was safe, and did not kill anyone, only for it to end the way it did...I think he was my favorite character and there was crying from yours truly. The manga is actually much kinder in that regard than the novel and rather more bearable. Still ends horribly for everyone but at least it's just tragic not 'want to bash your head against the wall to make it better' horrific...ehhh, anyway, I am getting incoherent again.

I am sure everyone has seen the promo S4 Battlestar Galactica photos.

My thoughts )

In other news, this is something that I was thinking about in response to one of [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore's posts. I realized I am rather weird in my fiction preferences in one respect: I've seen a lot of comments by people through the years that in order to really enjoy book/movie/whatever, they need a character they can identify with. And I realized that I not only do not need it, I prefer not to have a character like that. Because if there is one, I either get distracted by personal issues or bored because they aren't 'new to me.' I know I generally read/watch to get away from things in everyday, but that is pretty odd. I prefer to have no one to identify with, even if I do usually want characters to like. As I posted in the comments, 'my favorite narratives/characters are never that [identifying-with]. My favorite books are either Lymond Chronicles or Remarque's Three Comrades and I have no identification with any characters in them, male or female. My fave shows are BSG and Farscape and I really have no character who is 'like me' at all in it and don't identify with anyone. Even for my dramas, I don't really identify with most anyone in my fave dramas at all...'

To use the freshest example, I am adoring Hello My Teacher, but even though Bori is an awesome awesome heroine (smart, and optimistic, and kickass), I don't identify with her at all. And I adore Tae-In (ep 7? best confession of love ever. I loled so hard) but it would be a bit odd for me to identify with a 19-year-old troublemaker/gang leader from an abusive family with a dorky sense of humor. So yeah.

Anyway, is anyone else like this? Preferring to have characters to like but not identify with or as a POV character?

Also, checking for Hong Gil Dong subs is torture. But reading Kitchen Confidential is not.

Then don't be forward, ye hussies. Take off your shoes, go back to the kitchen, and wait.

I love Yahoo!answers where someone posted the following question:

Should you pray for a husband or wait?

Okaaaaaay.

They got the following answer which is so perfect, it's reproduced in its entirety:

yolanda, you should do both. Pray for the man God has prepared for you and wants you to have.

The problem with many women who wind up in lowsy relationships is that they have the wrong criterion for a man. And know little about what they should expect in a truly Godly man.

You should know that if you are the type of woman described in the proverbs for us men to look for, then God does have a man ready for you, and is seeking you. For you are likened unto a valuable treasure; as all God's daughters are.

The treasure never seeks the treasure hunter. There is a good reason for this too. For look at it this way. If the treasure is seeking a particular hunter, jumping from one place to the next, how does it know that the hunter is looking in place that the treasure just left. Liken that unto the good woman. For if you have looked around and jumped to some other man... a Godly man would not consider you because you belong to another.

SO be patient my sista. Trust that God is working on h.i.m. that will love you til your dieing day. A truly Godly man is not perfect, but God will make h.i.m. perfect for you. Selah.

He will come soon. Maybe not as soon as you like, but it will be soon as compared to the time you would have to spend waiting on the next one once you've missed the initial one.

As for me, when I missed and messed up on the first Godly treasure that I had in my life (way back in the 9th grade), it was almost 20 years before I came accross a next treasure of that calibre... and you can best believe that when I found her... I made certain that I made my self known... for she trusted God, and God gave her a man just like she wanted: Not perfect; but perfect for her. And sad to think of it, but she said, about the same amount of time went by for her...

beware the devils that have responded to your question. For the devil wants you to believe as they do. Trust in H.I.M. that created you. And you will prevail. Selah.

I confess to being puzzled as to what the Japanese Emperor has to do with it and why he is supposed to be the questioner's Dad (the only H.I.M. aka 'His Imperial Majesty' left around is the Emperor of Japan), especially since he is not a Christian, but I suppose the Godly people know what I do not.

There is also the following question:

How many Vile Temptresses does it take for an Amish man to finally give in?

Heh.

LOLOLOLOL. You know Hello My Teacher that I am loving at the moment? Well, I know Gong Yoo wasn't 19 when he did that, and I looked it up and he was 26. Heeeee. No wonder I am finding him cute. Also, even more amusing? The actress for Bori? The one who is supposed to be six years older than him? She is actually a year younger than he is. So she was playing her RL age and he wasn't. Heeee. Seriously. That is so amusing.

OK, sorry for the spammage but I just found this poster for the upcoming Vampire Knight anime:

Mmmm, YES.

Also, I looked up the voice actors, and if the listing is correct, Yuki is done by the same lady who did Tohru from Furuba and Zero by the guy who voiced Kiba in Wolf's Rain. Hmmmm. I like their voices a lot. (I didn't recognize any of Kaname voice actor's animes).

Header from Japanese page for anime )

While looking for this, I also came on spoilers for latest volumes which evoked a lot of tl:dr from self.

One very specific spoiler )
