I have started the anime Wolf's Rain, which I know is a huge favorite of [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore and [livejournal.com profile] crumpeteer.

One ep in and I have no idea what is going on, though it's clear Kiba will be the main character, but I am so so SO sold. A fantasy/postapocalyptic society of some sort. Characters hunted for their otherness. Gorgeous animation. Looks like a complicated story. Yay.

Anyway, are there any ships in this one? Fine if not, but if there are, I don't want to ship the noncanon thing :)

Also, if I was capable of a 'walk of shame,' this would be it, walking to the checkout counter at a bookstore with a book with this cover. Luckily I am not. Yeah, I am rereading all of Absolute Boyfriend. Seriously though, I really like AB because it's both incredibly shoujo and yet at the same time it pokes fun at the shoujo trope: of course the heroine's boyfriend will be drop-dead-gorgeous, willing to risk life and limb for her smallest whim, utterly loyal (Night refuses advances of girl who kept stealing all of Riiko's potential dates), talented, devoted to extreme measure. Yeah, he is all that. Because he is a robot programmed to do that! Heh. And it makes Riiko overlook the very real and very cool, if very flawed Soji. Of course, Night develops a personality and the whole thing is quite shoujo, but I do like that there is that layer there.

Also, because I was in a bookstore, I flipped through the Battle Royale manga. Bad idea. The novel was one of the most brilliant things I've ever read, but also one of the most scarring. It gave me nightmares (not literally) for weeks and I am never rereading it again. The manga's art is gorgeous and in a way it's a little less diturbing because you are not in the characters' head, but it's still horrrific. But I still ended up reading most of vol 12 because it all dealt with Sugimura and Kotohiki, and Sugimura's story was always the one that hit me the worst in the whole book. He spent the entire Game just searching for her in order to make sure she was safe, and did not kill anyone, only for it to end the way it did...I think he was my favorite character and there was crying from yours truly. The manga is actually much kinder in that regard than the novel and rather more bearable. Still ends horribly for everyone but at least it's just tragic not 'want to bash your head against the wall to make it better' horrific...ehhh, anyway, I am getting incoherent again.

Wr has epic love ALL OVER THE PLACE!!! There's the "our love is epic and destined and could save the world" and the "our love is tragic and doomed but i shall fight the entire world to save it" *points to icon* and the "we are clearly meant for each other but things made it not work the first time, but we'll try again" and finally "we are nice and sane and sensible in our love...is only there weren't that pesky apocalypse..."

Uhm...I can give you names for all but one(the last is a spoiler for midway through)

I MIGHT have dissected the first ep when I rewatched...

But basically: near apocalypse, wolves supposedly extinct, but really learned how to appear human(but they aren't werewolves) prophecy that one day the scent of lunar flowers will lead the wolves to the gateway to paradise, several wolves have gathered in a city because they can smell a lunar flower. Man hunting wolves. Man who believes only the lunar flower can save him wife. Scientist investigating lunar flower. Cop pining for his scientist ex.

*cough* favorite anime and main reason I got into anime *cough*

I will be 100% honest and say that Battle Royale scares me, and did even before looking at the manga...

I positively adore Wolf's Rain, and I don't watch much anime. Actually, it's the only true anime I've ever seen all the way through - other than WR I've only caught bits and pieces of Trigun and Last Exile (both of which I'd like to finish one of these days, when I'm not busted for time).

I hope you enjoy it! It's a slow burner but so well done.
