dangermousieBecause I think random things as I walk, here is what I was thinking about the topic today:
1. Sam Dong is clearly having problems with his hearing and these problems are especially bad for someone looking to have a singing career.
2. Using Occam's Razor, this has to be the result of Baekhee dropping the flower pot on his head (I have no idea how feasible this is medically, but in kdrama world, where car accidents cause eye cancer, it's probable enough).
3. Sam Dong got the flower pot to the head saving Hyemi from being brained by Baekhee.
ERGO, this is how I foresee this going down:
Ironically, to me this puts paid any hopes of Sam Dong/Hyemi as the drama's OTP. Mainly because if she first fell for him and then the I-am-going-deaf-saving-you stuff appeared (or there were no flowerpot after effects at all regardless of state of her feelings), I could see the love story developing as she switches her affections from Jin Gook to Sam Dong (and then either has to deal with 'my love is going deaf and pushing me away' angst or, if there is no deafness issue at all, having a nice romance). But as it is:
1. Currently she has friendly feelings towards but no romantic interest in Sam Dong.
2. She currently has a thing for Jin Gook. If fancams are to be believed, that goes through at least ep 9 (i.e. Japan scenes)
3. At some point, probably not too far off, she is going to learn Sam Dong is going deaf, and because of her.
4. So what we currently have is Hyemi having a thing for one guy, learning that another guy is going deaf because of her (yes, theoretically she can switch her affections to SD and then find out, but how dramatic would that be? And not very kdramaish, especially since if they wanted to go that route, they would have had to start the switch in affections much earlier).
5. One does not have to be a genius to figure out that the typical kdrama "for maximum emo" thing would be to have Hyemi resolve to throw away her feelings for Jin Gook (at whatever stage they may be at that point) and get together with the guy who has wrecked his future because of her.
6. Thus a lot of emo will ensue: Hyemi will feel guilt and also shippy unhappiness. Jin Gook will obviously be miserable seeing the girl he likes date another guy. And Sam Dong is going to me miserable, knowing the girl he likes is with him only because she feels sorry for him. Isn't this what kdramas are all about?
In real life, it is possible Hyemi could be in that sort of situation and gradually discover that Sam Dong is more her thing, though even there I'd wonder at it - she would always be wondering if she just talked herself into feelings because she had no choice, not to mention that's a short road to resentment for both parties in the relationship. In drama, I foresee a lot of wallowing (at which I'll probably be amused - you guys are in high school, getting/not getting guy/girl you like is not life-ending. Outside of Hanadan, people don't usually marry their high school sweethearts). And ultimately, Sam Dong will get better/overcome his handicap/turn out to be K, and let Hyemi go.
Or not. What I typed up above are predictions based on usual kdrama cliches. This drama could be unusual and go for a different tack, who knows. I guess we'll find out.
Tbh, I don't mind Hyemi with Jin Gook OR Sam Dong (providing Sam Dong matures/wises up a bit) - my main shippy investment in this is to make sure Baekhee dies alone and eaten by cats.

He still needs to get more character, though, otherwise he's not an interesting character to watch (which is what dramas are about ^^)
