Dream High love triangle thoughts
Jan. 23rd, 2011 08:40 amI was thinking about Dream High shipping (OK, obsessed, I confess) and I realized something weird:
I cannot get enthusiastic about Hyemi/Sam Dong at all. Don't get me wrong - latest ep 7 promo stills got me annoyed with Jin Gook so I don't particularly want him with Hyemi either. And if Hyemi falls for and is happy with Sam Dong, I am fine with that. Basically, in shipping here I am Team Hyemi - i.e. I want her with whoever makes her happiest and treats her best.
BUT. While I will be fine if it's Sam Dong, if SD stays the way he currently is, I can't see being particularly shipper rabid. And then I started thinking about why and came up with three reasons, one of which is pretty insignificant (the accent - I hate it. I hate it in every drama I've ever encountered and it's no exception here. If he started speaking the standard way, I'd love it so much better). The other two are kinda bigger.
1. I know Kim Su Hyun is 23 but he looks 16, max. He looks so young, in fact, that I can't ship him with anyone because it makes me feel slightly icky. (Sort of the same reason I can't watch Flames of Ambition where 17yr-old Yoo Seung Ho has a romantic line, with 25yr-old Seo Woo, no less). OK, not that the other students look 45, but they look older. Old enough that while I can't want to jump their bones myself, I have no problem shipping them in various combinations.
2. This one is the biggest problem - perhaps I am projecting because the thought of being with someone so simple and naive would drive me up the wall. Might be nice to have a son like that but a romantic partner, unless you are a Pil Sook type (i.e. sweet and simple), no way. Sure, it's a simple gender reversal of the usual 'simple but good-hearted and cheery girl gets the usually not-simple-and-cheery hero' but while I am used enough to it in the original combo (but often prefer other type of ships to it - that is why I was happy Coffee House OTP turned out who it was), I don't really like it when it's a guy who's a sweet-natured simpleton. Let me put it this way - it's sort of like my toddler - unstinting and unjudgmental affection is lovely but if someone who offers it is really simple, you end up being the adult in the relationship and the caretaker, and it can get tiring (Obiously, it's one thing in a child but in a romantic relationship - not my thing). I just don't see how SD can truly get the dark sides or issues that Hyemi has, and if he can't, what sort of a relationship is that? You want the other person to truly know you and be on the same wavelength. Now, if SD grows and gets more complex as the story progresses, than this, my biggest objection, becomes moot. But as it currently stands, I sort of want Hyemi with neither boy and just become a successful singer and have a glamorous career.

Date: 2011-01-23 03:35 pm (UTC)I'd love for Sam Dong to mature a bit and get a more complex character. Or at least show, that you can have serious conversations with him and that you can rely on him in tough times.

Date: 2011-01-23 04:49 pm (UTC)Before I even started watching this drama, I found it creepy that Suzy (born in 94) would be paired with these two boys who are born in 88. But now that I'm so into them, I just don't care. :P

Date: 2011-01-23 11:25 pm (UTC)because of a few factors, the first is that even before the drama started to film and air the fans already made a large fan base for taecyeon (jin gook) and eunjung (baek hee) mostly from the same people that disliked the fact that suzy was the lead. some people also complain over the fact that jin gook and hyemi couple is like incest because both idols are from the same company, hence being like siblings, they also complain about hem not having chemistry. and third they argue about the age gap between them (and they often ignore that soohyun is in fact a bit older than taec, even if by months).

Date: 2011-01-23 11:30 pm (UTC)and while i love hyemi with both guys i don’t think that right now samdong is the right guy for her, he's too soft and sweet, she needs someone that keeps her on her toes and know how to challenge her, not someone who keeps patting her on the head.

Date: 2011-01-24 01:51 am (UTC)Well, at least that's more child-friendly than the unprintable but joyful exclamation that came out of my mouth upon seeing this.
OMG my secondary OTP ILY!
(But what on earth is Pil Sook wearing? I know she's fat by Kirin standards, which means what - size 6? But there is no need to put her in a tent).
Re: there is a god!
Date: 2011-01-24 01:58 am (UTC)and don't you know? fat people on kdramas are tacky! because how dare any of them be proud and confident with their bodies and dress something that suits their bodies. i really can't wait until hyemi gives her the makeover [at least i think it will be hye mi, i mean she already gave sandong's] so she can dress nice and stop wearing the stupid wigs.

I kind of like this? But then again, they're not stepping too far away from the norm either, with him being all "I'll protect you" etc. He does need to eventually grow more of a backbone though, I agree.

Date: 2011-01-24 02:55 am (UTC)I am usually OK with most actors unless they are really horrifying as long as I like the character, and I do like JG's so far more than I do SD's.
