Dream High - eps 5 and 6
Jan. 19th, 2011 05:07 pmOne of the things I like about DH is how candy-colored pretty it is. Sometimes it feels like a manga come to life (the vibe feels like that too).

Warning - close to 100 caps behind the cut. Not one of Baek Hee because just seeing her raises my blood pressure. I don't dislike her because she does evil things (though seriously - trying to brain someone because they beat you in a competition is not a sign of a healthy mind) - I've liked plenty of entertaining villains who owned it. I would have little problem with her if she walked up to Hyemi and told her "listen, it's on - I am going to take away your career prospects and your potential boyfriends and everything else, down to your last pair of socks." But instead, she percieves herself as a wronged martyr - the scene after she did her best to kill Hyemi and sent Sam Dong to the hospital instead - it freaked me the hell out. Because Jin Gook confronts her about his suspicions and she starts weeping about how could he suspect her, she'd never do it, he should believe in her - and she genuinely believes every word she says and that she is wronged while she did her best to kill someone. That way lies Creepy from Gloria.
My OTP:

The misfits. I love all four of them, individually and separately.

Here for the pretty:

I kinda like the budding protectiveness Hyemi has for Pil Sook, the chubby girl with a sweet disposition and awesome voice, who's been put into the misfits class due to being too overweight for mean teacher in main class. I also find Pil Sook's crush on Jason, the 'cool boy' who treats her well, is adorable. I hope they get together.

He's trying to jar her memory that he's the little boy from her past, but it's not working. I can't wait for the moment she finds out.

This was my favorite scene in the drama so far - the four kids performing SNSD's Genie on the street to cheer up Jin Gook's adoptive hyung and to train Hyemi up in singing with feeling. I just love the joy of this performance.

Hyemi learns that Jin Gook has no idea when his birthday is but his 'fake' birthday is Christmas just like that little boy she met a long time ago - seriously, girl, connect the dots! (OMG, did he pick it because that's when child!Hyemi sang him a birthday song and made him a cake out of chocopies? Also, wtf is with horrible kdrama parents? His Mom was going to dump him in an orphanage and she never even bothered telling him when his birthday was? Ugh. Though seeing that his father appears to be BB from City Hall, a misplaced birthday is the least of his family problems).

Hyemi sees that the nasty graffitti slagging her has been replaced into pretty murals painting her as an angel. Oh, boys, you are really upping the ante - first Jin Gook calling her his asura (a demi-goddess in Buddhism) in his voiceover in the beginning of the ep and now Sam Dong transforming her into an angel? You got it bad, boys. Bad.

Hyemi is supposed to sing a song in competition and at the last minute she switches her choice to the birthday song she sang to Jin Gook when she was a little kid. Probably because that was the last time she sang for someone. I am pretty sure she hasn't connected Jin Gook with that long-ago kid, but just like Jin Gook, I am completely melting. As you can guess, I've rewatched this scene an unhealthy amount of times.

Sam Dong shields her from Baekhee's flower pot-of-murder with his own body, with predictable results. Baekhee, psycho, you deserve to rot in jail! Also, psssssst, the guy you are crushing on is even less likely to fall for you back now that you did your best to off the object of his affections and hurt his friend. Just sayin' (there is a large number of Baekmi/Jin Gook shippers and I honestly don't get it - she's a psycho. Regardless of whether he and Hyemi get together, I want him and any other male character, 100 miles away from Baekhee).

Oh, Sam Dong, you adorable weirdo goofball, ILY.

Hyemi is in the hospital and she keeps blaming herself - that what happened to Sam Dong is her fault. Jin Gook is comforting her, telling her this is not her fault. While kneeling and cleaning blood off her hands. Oh, drama, why so good to me? I am a sucker for the 'slightly tattered white knight' trope.

Hyemi is by Sam Dong's bedside, waiting for him to wake up.

Awww, you go, girl! Even as a Jin Gook/Hyemi shipper, I found my heart all warm with this scene! (Also, I love love love the trope of girl hugging Guy A and Guy B seeing it and stewing. Whether A is the OTP and B is the OTP interloper or vice versa, I don't care - I just love it).

Jason and Pil Sook, why are you so cute? I can't wait until he falls for her.

Coming up later (I ran out of time) - second half of ep 6, in which Jin Gook executes the classic kdrama fit of saving the heroine from traffic that she could have gotten out of the way of, if she could move faster than a 90yr-old on crutches and in which we are treated to Jin Gook's dad's douchiness (here's a hint, smartypants - if you don't want newspapers digging up dirt about you having an illegitimate son, keep it in your pants or use a condom. All right?)

Date: 2011-01-20 08:20 pm (UTC)I actualy like that all 3 guys in this are nice guys. I like the usuaal jerk with issues trope well enough but it's good to have a change - JG is basically proof that you can have issues and still be a decent person.

Date: 2011-01-20 08:25 pm (UTC)I think nobody pays attention to Pil Sook. I wonder if it's because they know that if they messed with her, Hyemi would pull their hair out and the boys will stomp on them.
