Dream High - my newest crush
Jan. 18th, 2011 12:34 pmI have finally started to catch up with Dream High - previously I'd only watched and liked the first ep - and I am startled to realize that DH is my new shiny crack. I like it even better than *gasp* My Princess.

This story of 6 kids at an art school pursuing their dreams and sorting out their issues has been created as perfect comfort food for yours truly. Is it's innovative or profound? No, not really. But it's fun and perfectly paced. It makes me care about the characters and puts a smile on my face. More importantly, I am not bored for a second.
My favorite guy in it is Jin Gook (if I were 10 years younger, I'd crush on him, but as it is, I want to make him soup and see him achieve his dreams. Bae Yong Joon's principal is more of 'Mousie's crush' material here) but my favorite character is Hyemi - I love her not despite her being a bitch but because of it. I just find it realistic that a teenage girl whose family just lost all their money and status and who's seen her career dreams ended, is going to be bitchy and standoffish and caustic and careful about trusting. I am rooting for her to succeed. Her nemesis Baek Hee I do not care for at all - OMG, your friend turned bitch on you - it's a reason to do well and succeed and not to be friends with her any more - but it's not a reason for underheanded evilness. Are you being chased by gangsters and sleeping in the dumpster? If not, no reason to bite heads off.
On the shipping front, I prefer Jin Gook/Hyemi (he saved her from gangsters! and gave her his helmet to cry into! and she cried for him when they were kids and he was going to be sent into an orphanage! plus, he's a tough street kid with issues and she's a former pampered princess! It's like it was written just for me), but if it ends up Sam Dong/Hyemi, I'll be OK with it because I do like Sam Dong and they are cute together. Which is the best shippy situation possible with a love triangle and many a better show could learn from DH (Veronica Mars, I am looking at you).
Have a triangle MV - that should convince you to give this drama a chance:
This drama just makes me happy. It reminds me of a good twdrama in its vibe but with excellent kdrama production values.
In conclusion, Jin Gook/Hyemi FTW!!!!!!!!!! But you can make Sam Dong a huge star to compensate!
Hmmmm, now I am wondering what happened to the two other musical-themed dramas - What's Up and The Musical. They seem to be in limbo. I want them!

Date: 2011-01-18 05:46 pm (UTC)Episodes 5 and 6 are SO MUCH LOVE that I am dying for next week's eps. The friendship between HY/JG/SD reminds me of a diffent dymanic version of the threesome in Nobuta wo Produce. Just don't with the two boys off frolicking in the sea and I will be happy.
But based on the official stills - I'm still thinking its SD/HM. I really don't care, because I love all three characters equally. Really the biggest surprise of the new year for me.

Date: 2011-01-18 05:55 pm (UTC)Yes, this is a huge surprise of the year for me - I never thought I'd like DH, let alone love it.
Haven't seen 5/6 yet (no subs) but can't wait.
I am shocking myself, since normally I am a rabid and decided shipper, by being OK with whoever she ends up with, even if I do have preferences.

Date: 2011-01-18 06:08 pm (UTC)However, what I love the most about DH is that it's not sappy. Whenever I swoon over JG/HM, the next scene is an amazing SD/HM moment that makes me crazy about them. So I toggle back and forth happily, and then the growing bromance between JG/SD makes me even happier.
I also love the personal growth in all three kids, and their artistic achievements as well. DH is a solid drama, and I'm charmed by its skill and heart.
Oh, and I can't stand Baekhee. Never much like Eunjung, but damn is Baekhee a beyotch I can't relate to at all. Hye Mi I like bc she gets her comuppance, learns from it, and then becomes better as a person and as an artist. BH is just ugh for me.

Date: 2011-01-18 06:15 pm (UTC)I agree that KSH is a better actor (is there anyone who'd argue otherwise? :P) but character-wise, Jin Gook is more of my fictional type, so there we are...Either way, both guys (and HM) are awesome and I love watching them.
I have to say DH is a rare instance where I am fine with an almost all-idol cast. The drama revolves so much around singing and dancing it makes sense to put people whose strength is singing and dancing in there. If they have to stick idols somewhere, it makes more sense like this, as opposed to the usual 'give him/her heavily dramatic role they can't handle.'

Date: 2011-01-18 06:22 pm (UTC)I love IU as Pilsook, I think she's a natural at acting (esp. in eps 5-6). The entire Idol + KSH cast is working for me, so no complaints here. A good script and gripping story goes a long way to keeping me interesting, some stiff acting here and there notwithstanding.
DH is getting better, and I'm thrilled to have picked it up. Of my three current dramas, all are good for the genre its in - MP, DH, and President.

Date: 2011-01-18 08:33 pm (UTC)Pilsook is cute but that fat makeup has to go. It looks so weirdly fake. She's 82kg, right? That's 164lbs. I have friends who are not much taller than her who weigh that much and they don't look like rolling tubs of lard - it's sort of ridiculous. I mean, unless she's 3ft tall, the proportions make no sense.
I'd love to watch President but I have yet to see subs anywhere. Hopefully KBSworld will carry it and I'll get subs that way.

Date: 2011-01-18 08:55 pm (UTC)President is superb and sublime, thought provoking and riveting. I wish WITHS2 can sub it for the world to watch. Hopefully KBSworld will carry it.
I totally agree about Taec, he's improving, and he has a lot of raw energy and connection with the screen. I enjoy his presence and he's really perfect as Jin Gook.

Date: 2011-01-18 09:10 pm (UTC)Also, after episode 5 I think Sam Dong deserves getting Hye Mi as well. I can't even decide. They'd both be such a good match for her.
I would have like Baek Hee more if she wouldn't have turned that evil. Standing your ground and becoming a stronger person, that I can understand. But using underhanded methods to succeed? That's just cheap.
I'm with you on What's Up and The Musical. I've been waiting for these since they were announced. I really like music dramas and series :D
Also, Re:subs. I found them here: DarkSmurfSub. Don't know if you already know this forum. You have to sign up but subs are superfast, at least for DH and MP. And as much as I like Haru2, I kinda want the DH ones faster. :)

Date: 2011-01-18 09:13 pm (UTC)DH is very fun - first ep is so-so but after that it gets wonderful. Someone upthread compared it a bit to Nobuta wo Produce and I can see the similarity in the whole 'school misfits trying to find their place.'

Date: 2011-01-18 09:54 pm (UTC)DH gets AWESOME on episode 5 onward. 1-2 are okay, 3-4 are pretty good. But 5 was complete and utter love from me. I've watched it 3 times already, and I pushed out that President-MP review in between rewatching DH ep5. it was a killer night last night.

-as far as I see she still can't dance-and she just recognize it in a KBS show last week:D

Date: 2011-01-19 02:14 am (UTC)I saw the cut of them performing Girls' Generation's "Genie" on the street, and it looks like a real fun ride. They really do seem like a charming cast. I hope it does come together for a good drama.
