Various drama things
Jan. 5th, 2011 09:22 pm1. Short preview for ep 17 of Secret Garden is out and ouch - here comes the angst! Gimme moar!!!!!!!!
2. I just found out that the second lead in the upcoming Paradise Ranch, the drama that's the acting debut of Changmin from DBSK, is Joo Sang Woo. You may remember him from that little drama known as Giant. Yes, it's my baby Min Woo a.k.a. my favorite character in the drama. Seeing that JSW more than held his own against people like Lee Bum Soo in Giant (and in fact his and Miju's storyline expanded and expanded due to crazy popularity), I feel kinda bad for poor kpop idol Changmin - JSW is going to wipe the floor with him! It doesn't help that JSW looks like a man but Changmin looks all of 12 years old. Come on, are you telling me this boy is old enough to drive, let alone date anyone?

While I am being a cranky grandma, why don't you eat something and get clothes that fit?
And while we are on topic - why, oh why do idols get starring roles as their acting debuts, as a matter of right? WTF! Most of them can't act. I have no objection to them entering the acting biz but how about starting with small roles and learning a bit first? Why do I have to suffer through their learning curve? If you are not ready for a leading role, then you shouldn't be in it! There are a ton of excellent actors who never get leading roles or who take years to get one, but instead we are subjected to cardboard idols as leads who fail miserably. I mean - it's one thing to give a newbie a starring role when you are basing it on their chops - see Joo Won and Jung So Min - but they were presumably chosen based on their acting ability as they aren't idols - and they did a great job. I don't want kdramas to turn into jdramas so all the recent idol-drama stuff is making me unhappy. Sure, some idols do a good job even at the start (I loved Changmin's former bandmember Yoochun in SKKS) but that's an exception not the rule. Yup, skipping that one.
3. An upcoming drama I am excited for is 49 Days. The soul-swapping theme sounds interesting (more Who Are You than Secret Garden in this case), Jo Hyun Jae is sexy and manly and I adore Jung Il Woo (though I want him to have another leading role - talking of non-idols who should be starring in things). Lee Yo Won has always underwhelmed me but she's gorgeous. Plus, the writer is the writer of Brilliant Legacy and Prosecutor Princess, so what's not to love?
4. Ep 2 of Dream High fully put me into Hyemi/Jin Gook territory. Sorry, Kim Su Hyun! ILY and all, but you can't comete with his saving her from gangsters, and giving her motorcycle rides, and letting her cry into his helmet, and the fact that he remembers her from when they were both kids and she wept for him because his mother was going to dump him in an orphanage. Sorry. Go console yourself with glasses girl.

Date: 2011-01-06 09:32 am (UTC)That's so true. :( and it's not like they have a lack of talented actors available! Unfortunately those have to wait in the backsear while the talent-less idols take the good roles.
As for Changmin... I have hopes for him. He might surprise us all. And just because he looks like a badly dressed little boy in the promo pics, that doesn't mean he'll look the same in the drama.
But yeah, leave "singers" in the idol business and actors in the acting business.

Date: 2011-01-08 02:14 am (UTC)I much prefer it when the idols are given supporting roles as their debts (the friend, the younger brother, etc), because it allows them to learn and yet they get a nice storyline. Like Kim Hee Chul (from Golden Bride), he started off in small roles - still does them - and that makes him enjoyable. Or Lee Hong Ki (Jeremy from You're Beautiful), who was a child actor and then re-debted as an actor in a supporting role; he was cute. Then, TOP, Kim Joon, and Taecyeon - they had smaller and/or one-dimensional roles, but that worked well for them.
Then, you have guys like Changmin - who get the lead role their first time out. What really gets me is the rumor that Paradise Ranch was put on hold for nearly a year (the first couple of episodes where apparently filmed last January) because they ran out of money and because Changmin needed/wanted acting lessons. I'm not sure about the acting lessons part, but I read it on several Korean entertainment sites. That worries me. Also - the rest of the cast.
Joo Sang Wook as the secondary male lead? After Giant?! He should be the lead. He'll act circles around Changmin. Lee Yeon Hee, is someone the camera loves; she can be really good or bit shaky, but - she's very very good when she's in her element. I'm worried Changmin might bring her down with his acting. (Honestly, I think the only reason she's in this is because of agency is producing the drama.) Yoo Ha Na is someone I love because of My Lucky Star and The Sons of Sol Pharmacy House. She plays the fun, bubbly character really well. I'm hoping they give her something to do - I don't want to watch both girls pine after Changmin for sixteen episodes.
I know Changmin will be with Lee Yeon Hee; but, I'm hoping they'll have two OTPs ala Coffee Prince, Secret Garden, and Gloria. I just. . .he looks 12, and I cannot buy two pretty women fighting over him. Sorry.

Date: 2011-01-08 02:24 pm (UTC)Changmin - I am sure he sings well - I've heard DBSK. But the fact remains (a) he should not get a leading role out of the gate and (b) he does look 12. He doesn't even look old enough to be in high school.
Lee Yeon Hee went from East of Eden and being opposite Song Seung Heon to this? WTF! She is an uneven but charismatic actress who also deserves better. I wonder if they have blackmail pictures of these actors somewhere, that is the only way to explain it.
I agree - sometimes a few idols have chops to start with (see Lee Seung Gi in Brilliant Legacy - he did well) but as a general rule I believe they should train and work their way up.
This is lining up to be so bad it will make Heading to the Ground look like a masterpiece.

Date: 2011-01-08 11:19 pm (UTC)Changmin, I'm sure he's a great singer and a nice boy, but. . .this leading role just seems like a weird thing. Because, the company producing this is his agency - clearly they are just trying to make money off their products (aka Changmin and Lee Yeon Hee).
She is an uneven but charismatic actress who also deserves better.
So true. Again, she's a member of the company that is producing this series. As far as I know, she's their best known (and one of their youngest) actresses. So, they stuck her in this opposite Changmin.
Lee Seung Gi really proved himself with Brilliant Legacy. But, it wasn't his first acting role. He had done a 257 episode sitcom with other young idols and he had a supporting role (as the youngest sisters boyfriend/husband) in the 80 episode family drama Famous Princesses. He learned during those two shows. That's the thing - idols should have secondary/smaller/supporting roles before getting the lead role in a "big" drama or film.
Changmin had to have acting lessons - that makes me very wary of this series - because someone thought he wasn't very good after just filming two-three episodes. Which sucks because I really like the other three cast members. This really is shaping up to be a hot mess.
BTW: Are you still watching Gloria?

Date: 2011-01-09 04:46 am (UTC)Re: Paradise Ranch. Acting lessons thing is very horrifying to me too. The premise sounds idiotic no matter who was in it, but couple it with a boybander with zip acting experience and it's going to be a spectacular wreck.

Date: 2011-01-09 06:50 am (UTC)Re: Paradise Ranch: Yes, the fact that after just a couple of episodes - a time when most actors are still finding their characters - someone thought he needed acting lessons. Someone what he really just wasn't getting better.
I really don't understand the premise. They got married in their teens/early twenties, divorced, she left, she comes back and they realize they are still in love. Meanwhile, poor Secondary Guy (who can act circles around the rest of the cast) is a cold business man who falls for Heroine and becomes nice while pining for Heroine. And poor Secondary Girl is just. . .there, I guess. I don't want to watch sixteen episodes of that! It's sounds more like a movie or ten episode drama to me.
This drama is such a hot mess, and it hasn't even aired yet! (Just watch, it turns out to be good - and we eat our words. . .yeah, I don't think so. It is listed as a romantic melodrama.)
