My fave anime is about to be turned into a likely horror - a horror with singing and dancing, I bet

I have seen it a few times on my flist already, but apparently a studio bought rights for a live-action version of one of my favorite animes of all time (actually behind only Trigun as a favorite), Full Metal Panic.

Even "better?" The rumor is Zac Effron (most known for High School Musical 1, 2, 3, 18, ten billion) will play Sousuke, the over-solemn teen mercenary. He will defeat the terrorists by singing at them. Maybe, if we are lucky, he and Kaname could do a tender love ballad while dodging bullets in the middle of the forest. Ahahahahaaaaaaaa. I actually like Zac Effron and think he was adorable in HSM but no. Just no. Who are they going to cast for Kaname, Miley Cyrus?

Bleh. And this is from the gal who actually thinks Keanu Reeves will make a good Spike in the upcoming live-action version of Cowboy Beebop.

(I reserve the right to be pleasantly surprised).

Hey, they did hilarious Lupine skits in the 1990s :)
Seriously though, from an acting ability POV, all, apart from Inagaki Goro, could pull it off, as they are good actors. As for physicality, Katori Shingo and Kimura Takuya have both played ronin samurai, Kimura and Kusanagi Tsuyoshi have been playing Kendo since they were kids and Kimura and Katori had real bushido training, Kimura esp. in the last 3 years.
Nakai has the acting ability and could learn the moves (he is a dancer after all) but Inagaki Goro ... well ... ummm ... no.
I think they definitely want to cast with Japanese actors, which are as well-known as SMAP not necessarily are SMAP. I could imagine it would be the usual suspects of Odagiri Joe, Oguri Shun, perhaps even Kimura Takuya.

DiCaprio is still attached to an Akira adaption, so that doesn't really surprise me.

They really need to leave the anime alone. Live action versions of it just don't seem to work because anime is generally so long. I can't imagine something like Trigun or Full Metal Alchemist getting their dues in a two hour movie. This isn't even taking into account the casting. I just can't imagine Sousuke singing and dancing. Unless it was about weapons.

Ugh I'm so sick of this American remake crap. Just leave it alone America and maybe try to come up with something original instead.

I just can't bring myself to get as excited as I should about the live action FMP. I mean I LOVE this anime, and it would be fairly easy to turn into a live action without gutting too much of it. But Zac Effron as Sousuke???? WTF?! Obviously they've never even watched the show!

I am reserving my judgement on Keanu Reeves as Spike, but not convinced!@

Nooooo! Leave FMP alone, you beasts! Urgh, horrible news. Blech. And as sodahands points out, how are they going to handle Sousuke's background? Isn't that going to offend American sensibilities? (By which I mean the censors' and marketers' sensibilities, of course.)
Funnily enough, I had just embarked on a judicious re-watch of FMP when I read this :-). Damn, it's good!
