Finished ep 3 of Return of the Condor Heroes. [livejournal.com profile] crumpeteer is right, that kid was incredibly annoying. But I don't particularly care as now he is grown-up and incredibly beefcakey. Moral of the story? Be kind to stray children for they will grow into prime rib :P

Or something.

No angst so far, which is disappointing. I neeeeeeeed hot people angst.

In news of other violent hotties, Fair warning: I plan to embark on a rewatch of my favorite movie of all time: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (yes, I do think they are one movie). I discovered the books when I was 12 and fell in love with them. When years later I discovered movies would be made out of them, I was both excited and terrified. Best Friend and I would talk about it for hours.

But they turned out perfect, like someone reached into my imagination and plucked it down on the screen. It’s the kind of feeling you get when you walk out of the theater and the world feels less intense and real. Total dream-state.

If I had LJ at that point, it would have been a scarily fixated LOTR zone.

Yeah, I am the geek who took time off work for Trilogy Tuesday (Mr. Mousie and I both agree it was the best movie experience ever).

And when we were in New Zealand around Queenstown four or so years ago, yeah, we totally geeked out and took a tour of whether they filmed.

I am a fangirl.

So rewatch probably means a lot of posts.

Also, Aragorn? Hottest, most awesome movie hero ever. Yeah. Not that I don’t adore the hobbits or Legolas or Faramir or Eomer but you know. Girl’s got her priorities.

Also, I realized that while I watched and loved Buffy I never really watched Angel even though Best Friend was a huge fan and she is a good indicator of what I’d like. Should I give it a try?

Also, people have been going back and forth about VM’s last night ep being a series finale with no closure. Some (like me) being annoyed like heck and other saying ‘it’s noir’ or ‘he didn’t know he wouldn’t be renewed.’

OK.

It’s not the fact that it has no neat tidy ending that bothers me. Farscape’s last episode was ‘Bad Timing,’ the ending of which literally had me scream and scream and scream at the TV (Mr. Mousie went for the earplugs). At that time, they didn’t know they’d be able to get $$$ together to film the miniseries. And all they needed to do to have tied it up more or less was to snip off the last two minutes or so.

Yet?

I thought it was one of the most brilliant things I’ve ever seen, even as it broke my heart.

Why?

Ending it the way they wanted, and no tinkering was no ‘I am bargaining with the network because if it’s a cliffhanger, they’ll have me come back’ was the modus operandi. This is the way they saw the ep end. Close of story. And because David Kemper and Co. went out with guns blazing (second half of S4 is my favorite FS ever), because they didn’t do everything and anything, ditch their core concept, dumb down to get more viewers? To me the jaw-dropping end of BT came across as in line with their desire to do the story their way, and not patheticness.

And also? Because if the end of BT was the end, it would have been a great place to end in, narratively speaking. Yet another empire (even more powerful) out to hunt them down. Earth protected forever. And John and Aeryn finally resolving everything, no need to hide, and this time refusing to be separated in death. They tried it. It sucked.

That desperate last kiss, the blast, and that last shot of their intermingled ashes with the engagement ring sticking out? And D’Argo screaming? It was the perfect Farscapian end: bleak and super-romantic at the same time.

None of the above can be said of VM. The episode wasn’t interesting, nothing was resolved, or left at a place where it could proceed from. And there is no defense of artistic integrity from RT.

So…Buh-bye, disappointing show.

But this reminds me. I am putting ‘Look at the Princess’ eps into DVD player now as it’s where I left off my Farscape rewatch. I really shouldn’t let so many weeks go in between viewings because FS is such a heavily serial show that it dilutes impact to have it interrupted like this.

... okay, that tears it. Next time I'm at Highly Illegal DVD Store, I'm buying Farscape.

Happy?

YESSSSSSSSS!

I have to warn: most of the five year storylines only really start going at the end of s1 (the last 7 or so eps).

I just re-watched the LOTR movies o_O. I did finish to rewatch Rotk tuesday ^^. Ah ah! I'm looking forward your future posts then ^^. I love love that part with Eowyn and Faramir that they put in the extended version. And everytime I watch those movies, I miss Viggo. Don't ask why, I just do ^^.

Anyway, best trilogy ever with Indiana Jones XD.

I have a confession: I don't like Indiana Jones at all :) I don't hate it or anything, but I am always so bored. Got it for Mr. Mousie as a present though because he likes it :)

Give it time. No matter how light it may start off, I have yet to see one that didn't dwell in a deep pit of angst for at least a little while. Besides, you already know he gets put in chains at some point...

Also, Aragorn? Hottest, most awesome movie hero ever. Yeah. Not that I don’t adore the hobbits or Legolas or Faramir or Eomer but you know. Girl’s got her priorities.

And Boromir. Boromir is hot. (Boromir is Sean Bean and thus incapable of not being hot) But yes, Aragorn is the hottest.

Also, I realized that while I watched and loved Buffy I never really watched Angel even though Best Friend was a huge fan and she is a good indicator of what I’d like. Should I give it a try?

I *hem* actually like Angel better than Buffy(the first 3 seasons at least) But then, late s2-early s3 Angel was my intro to rgw franchise, so I'm biased.

Also, people have been going back and forth about VM’s last night ep being a series finale with no closure. Some (like me) being annoyed like heck and other saying ‘it’s noir’ or ‘he didn’t know he wouldn’t be renewed.’

What happened, anyway?

You have an excellent point.

Re: Sean Bean. Funnily, when we first heard the movie was going to be made, me and Best Friend cast SB as Aragorn in fantasy casting (we were thinking Sharpe).

I meam Gentle Crackdown had it's angstfest, and that thing was just pure comedy crack...if THAT has it's angst period, imagine what a show about forbidden love will have...

*points to icon and taunts with icon post she'll make later tonight*

Sean Bean...I SO need to see the Sharpe movies...were you like me in Troy and wishing it was about Odysseus instead of Achilles(esp since you can hear Brad Pitt thinking "deep manly voice" the whole time)

Eeeee! Icon!

Brad Pitt was yummy in Troy but that whole movie was awful.

Oh, and angst just hit in RoCH

I don't think I got very far when I watched ROTCH. It seemed like it would be The Perfect Drama, since it was SO Beautiful, but then...something about the characters didn't appeal. I think the acting left something to be desired. Or something. Alas that the pretty could not hold my attention.

Will keep tabs on your LJ to see if it ever gets addictive. :P

Ahahahah, angst helps everything along.

You know what seems REALLY good so far? Butterfly Lovers. SO SO SO GOOD. Even better than HanaKimi because her girl identity was not revealed, like, within the first two episodes. And from the looks of it, it will be quite a while yet until her identity is revealed. I rilly rilly want a slow build up of camaraderie and all between main characters. And, from the first three episodes I saw, the build up is AWESOME. Girl-dressed-as-guy is, like, my all-time favorite story plot, just because it has the potential to be SO GOOD in SO MANY WAYS. (My one disappointment about HanaKimi was that Sano knew practically right off the bat that she was a girl, so it was really only Nakatsu feeling the gay-angst thing, which was hilarious, but. Still. I really want the sort of storyline where people fall in love BEFORE they realize that they are in love. And that the love started off as friendship and just grew and grew until it became transcendental love (Cassandra Claire's Draco Trilogy has a bit of that) and then later on they realize there is that physical aspect as well. And OMG Butterfly Lovers totally has that plot. EEEEEEEEEEEE. *keeping my fingers crossed for further great development* This series will be SO AWESOME if it continues on the track it is now.)

Anyway. Ahahaa, will stop now.

Okay, so I decided to give ROCH another chance (since you are raving about it constantly on LJ), and I realized I actually have NOT seen it before. Ahahah, what I saw before was Chinese Paladin, and I thought that it was ROCH, since Crystal Liu is in that one as well, so I was all confused. (I think it is because she's so ungodly hot in these dramas that the watcher all confused. :P)

So I guess I will be watching ROCH afterall, ahahah. First episode of it looks v. interesting.

Date: 2007-05-30 08:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Yay! You are giving ROCH another try. Yay!

Two really really big warnings though:

1. I don't usually rec it, but seriously, please, just skip the first three eps and start with ep 4. First three are backstory and because they had to hack it down like crazy, unless you are familiar with the book, it's rather confusing (I was constantl going 'wha?'). Also, child actor is annoying. All you need to know is he ran away from abusive monks and now lives in a cave with his OTP who trains him (she is 4-5 years older but looks ageless). And now they are grown up. Seriously. It's not a big deal to have disorienting first three eps, especially since this drama is so awesome later on and since (because of the length) it's an equivalent of disappointing first ep, but if you skip, you'll just save some time. (Or maybe just watch ep 1 and skip to ep 4, but the kid is pretty annoying).

2. I adore it, but it's a wuxia drama with all the benefits and drawbacks. It has romance to die for (literally), gorgeous scenery, marvelous fights and a complicated plot, but it also has wuxia drawbacks: it feels like a fairytale which might be good or bad.

Anyway, I didn't mean to scare off, it's just I love it so much I want to maximize viewing enjoyment.

From: [identity profile] lenabean.livejournal.com
Have already seen most of ep1, so I will just take your advice and jump straight to ep.4.

And anything that feels like a fairytale is usually good with me. :D Like Fairy From Wonderland? AWESOME AWESOME WUXIA-MODERNESQUE C-DRAMA (or at least the first half of it was--just so so awesome, and the OTP, Ariel Lin and Hu Ge, is to die for--and I took a long break from it due to LACK OF SUBS, so when I returned to watching it, everything felt a bit...off-kilter. Still v. good, though just not as gripping as the first half, but I really blame the long hiatus).

I can't WAIT to see Ariel Lin in Legend of the Condor Heroes. Will be dying a happy death.

From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
OMG, you saw Little Fairy. I want to watch this but could find no info on it. Tell meeeeeeeee about it :)

I am going to die of glee with LCH too :)

Re: ROCH. It gets good between eps 4-6 and then after that it gets awesome.

General info for FFW can be found here (in case you haven't seen it before): http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Tian_Wai_Fei_Xian

The director, named Li Guo Li, for the series is AWESOME. I <3 him to bits. He's also director for Chinese Paladin AND Legend of the Condor Heroes (2007). Heeeee. I just like his style.

You can download it here: http://www.d-addicts.com/forum/viewtopic_29721.htm
Though only 9 or 10 eps of it has been subbed. I ended up watching a dubbed version of it out of desperation to SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, but it's not an English/European language dub, so you will probably have to wait a bit. :(

Or if you have a problem with dl'ing using BitComet like I have, you might want to check out the first 4 eps (Eng subbed) here: http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=storm003

But, yes, it is totally fantastical and fluffy like cotton candies, but with enough angst not to make it nauseatingly so. It might be prettier than ROCH in terms of filming quality, but I can't ascertain until I see more of ROCH.

So, story is about this fairy from heaven (who happens to be the 7th daughter of the God of Heaven, so she's not only a fairy, but a PRINCESS FAIRY, ahhaha) who is naughty so she gets punished to earth to live with this hardworking and honest family. (Fairy God Father hopes that they will be a good influence on her.) Son of hardworking and honest family is NICE TO A FAULT (ie: Mr. Hu Ge) and adorable and he tries to teach her about love and respect for others, and they end up falling for each other. And there's lots of hijinx and a great supporting cast. (That's the nice thing about c-dramas sometimes--they're not all focused on the OTP and actually give the other characters a bit of a role.)

I just loved the first part, where she's disguised as male (because it'd be dangerous for a FEMALE, fairy with magical powers notwithstanding, to be wandering earth unprotected) and she attends his school and tries to live life like a human being. <333333333333.

And there's this one scene, about the smell of burning potatoes that I will remember forever. The whole discovery of love is embodied in burning potatoes, you see. But I won't spoil it for you. Heeeeeeeeeeee, <3 the drama.

And! To top it all off, it has The Best Soundtrack Ever Ever. Seriously beats all other movies/series soundtracks. I listened to the entire soundtrack on repeat 5 billion times. Still not bored.

PS: Aragorn was hot and The Perfect Hero. Am still ambivalent about his Hero Swagger, though. Aragorn is my Manly Hero, and Legolas is my Pretty Hero. Ahahaha, yes.

You should totally watch Angel. (Even if the forth season is a little iffy, it does make up in the fifth.) Even if Angel is a little dull at times, he always has great supporting characters. My personal favorite from the show is, and will always be, Doyle. He's ADORABLE. And Irish. Which adds to the adorableness.

I’m totally with you on bad timing ending: it’s completely awful, it makes you scream at tv and hyperventilate for an hour after, it’s absolutely unfair and terrible, and yet… right. not ‘fitting’ end, but possible one; it’s so farscape style, which likes to remind us that there’re no happy endings sometimes.
I haven’t seen peacekeepers war yet, so I don’t know anything about species that pulverized J&A yet, but it would’ve been okay even if it were some meaningless mercenaries from nowhere, since bad things happen without any sense of drama. and it’s still satisfying, because J&A did everything they could, and resolved all secrets, and refused to fall apart even in the end.
and it completely broke my heart, too. oh, farscape.

on another note, Aragorn? is totally made of awesome, oh yeah ^___^
