It is flawed - a bit uneven - and the first two eps were rather slow - but oh God, it's so lovely and has this really unusual combo I haven't seen in any other drama - it's got something of the magic of an indie film like Lost in Translation, AND is giddily romantic at the same time. And main boy(whom I haven't seen in anything else) is very cute. I recommend it.
also, the heartbreak is EXQUISITE. there's one scene that I firmly believe is a classic of cinema - even if you decide not to watch the rest of the drama, you need to watch that scene. I'll let you know what it is later.
it's not. again, it's rather light-hearted the first few eps, then the angst hits and kinda never really goes away. I think they called it a sitcom because they didn't know any other word to describe it's more episodic-type style(no worries: there's still an overall story arc, fo sho).
SPOILER: the epic scene is one where she sees her boyfriend of a zillion years for the first time since he broke up with her and she pretends to be all ok even though they both know she isn't and they have a perfectly polite conversation, and then she leaves and just breaks down completely and then her OTP(a complete stranger at this point)comes along and..it goes from there. that was super spoilery but I know you pretty well so I figured that's what you wanted.
I liked it. Mind you this is coming from someone who tends to avoid romantic dramas altogether.
But I found it was intelligent and well written. It IS more of a comedy, but not those "wacky" rom-com style funny (yknow, with overly fiesty heroine and arrogant hero screaming at each other for an hour for the lulz). It's more "mature", for lack of better word, and affectionately parodies kdrama tropes in a playful way.
Worth a shot, I assure you, but don't go in watching it with kdrama goggles. It's very different from the usual stock.
I love Soulmate! It's angsty and funny and just really well shot/produced. The two characters in the last four caps are the OTP. It's got an open ending though. And the female character in the red glasses has "nails on a chalkboard" voice and I wish she was never on the show. But it's a really fun drama and it's only 12 eps too. You should watch it.
The music in it was amazing (every song on the OST is on my Top 20 Most Played list on iTunes).
The romance. This is where I kind of hate myself. It takes A LONG TIME for the OTP to meet each other. Like, not until the last 4-5 episodes. I guess they were trying to make the 'soulmate' thing work, I mean they have interactions throughout the drama, "fateful" interactions, but they never actually KNOW each other. So I kind of hated the fact that they don't interact until the very end (I think it was meant to have a second season) BUT I guess the buildup wouldn't have been as sweet? I don't know. Catch 22 I guess.
That rambling aside, I did like the last few episodes when they finally met each other. If only because for the first 10+ episodes, you knew that they wouldn't be with whoever they were currently with so it kind of felt like a waiting game instead. Just. Waiting. Waiting. WAITING.
It takes A LONG TIME for the OTP to meet each other
Yes, that's what irritated me as well in the beginning. But I realized that what I really loved about the whole drama in the end was the main heroine's struggles, mainly her relationship with her 3 year old boyfriend and everything that came with it (ahem*spoiler*ahem). It was portrayed so realistically and beautifully that it resonated with me in a way that is unlike anything I've experienced with other kdramas.
Plus, the soundtrack alone was worth sitting through until the end.

I found this so incredibly frustrating. And I wish they'd spent a little more time developing the OTP once they met as well. I mean I get they're soulmates and there wasn't very much time but they just fell in love so fast and that's one of my pet peeves. And then there was a freaking open ending too!
There was so much I loved about this drama, only.... I don't usually have problems with open endings but I just didn't like how it was left hanging here. Sort of spoiled all the rest of it for me. I really wish that planned 2nd season had come about.
YES YOU SHOULD WATCH IT. It is definitely one of my favorites. I don't have anything to add here, I think everyone here has said most of what I wanted to say.
I really wish that planned 2nd season had come about. This.
Come on, MBC, if there's ever a show that needed a Season 2, it's Soulmate! The end was too...well, you'll see. *dons evil grin*
