In need of another fandom
Aug. 2nd, 2005 06:34 pmSo, what to do?
Farscape is over, and I can rewatch it (and do), but would like something where I haven't seen it all before.
It is years until the next Harry Potter book.
And months till Serenity.
Star Wars is done, at least until a nebulous series in the future.
Jorge Amado is dead and won't be writing any more amazing books for my pleasure.
And Pratchett's latest isn't due until October.
There is no more Lord of the Rings. And Buffy is similarly over (though it was gone long before then).
I have read Wodehouse, Dunnett, Remarque, Bujold and Dickens until I know all the books.
And the new Amelia Peabody books suck.
And "La Dame de Monsoreau" does not, but rereading it will make me bawl.
There is no Bollywood movie coming out that I am excited about until August 12 (The Rising).
And there is only (understandably) one hour a week of BSG.
So, people on my flist, I need a new obsession, to while away the time. Suggestions?
ETA: Thanks guys! Everyone has been really helpful and I have tons of candidates for a new and shiny obssession. Mmmm, I like my flist!

Date: 2005-08-02 10:53 pm (UTC)Also. are you a Star Trek fan? Ron Moore explored the same stuff in DS9 that he's doing for BSG. You might want to catch some of the latter DS9 episodes (I'd say season 3 onwards) to get a feel for his earlier works. Think happier BSG with slightly less angst. But he ties the themes of prophecy, religon, government all nicely together.

Date: 2005-08-02 11:07 pm (UTC)I echo the Deadwood & Veronica Mars recs. Deadwood is almost the only show my roommate & I both like...and that's saying something. I'm a new friend, so I don't know all your tastes yet, but if you haven't checked them out, there are some interesting closed fandoms-Wonderfalls was great and run by Tim Minear.

Date: 2005-08-02 11:55 pm (UTC)I also love Dune. It's SciFi, though not you type of "bunch of people on a starship" SciFi. Personally I think it's very angsty and romantic. There are books (only the first 3 are really worth reading), a movie and two mini series. If you are just for watching maybe how about the second miniseries (better technical quality), simply because I'd love to hear your take on it.
Since we normally don't have the same taste, I could be totally off base though :) But Dune is a real SciFi classic. Well, that is, if you haven't read it already.

Date: 2005-08-03 02:00 am (UTC)Freaks me out repeatedly, but once you start, it's impossible to stop watching. I caught the first season over Christmas while it was snowing, and became hooked.
Also, have you read any Ursula K. LeGuin? I liked the Tombs of Atuan, couldn't get into much else. Garth Nix is another possibility, he wrote some good things. Don't like his most recent stuff though. Seems like everyone's pushing the envelope a bit too much, getting too cocky once they know they've got a good thing going. Which is when The Splat occurs.
My fandom is just fine as is. Lee/Kara is high maintenance, and I don't even write or run anything!

Date: 2005-08-03 02:15 am (UTC)There are tons of websites dedicated to helping people get caught up on the show. marsinvestigations.net is a good one.
(I got obsessed with VM without seeing it as well, because that's how all of my obsessions begin, and I found that it was fairly easy to catch up on. There are transcripts from
I would also recommend the show "Lost". It's fantasy, which you like, character oriented, and sort of epic, in a way.
Yes, I am obsessive. Why do you ask?

Date: 2005-08-03 04:00 am (UTC)Stargate. You gotta find someone with the DVDs, especially the first three seasons. (Sci-Fi also does repeats nearly every day.) Dr. Daniel Jackson and Colonel Jack O'Neill. Two of the greatest characters *ever*.
I'll also second Alias. If you're looking for a great nailbitter show, this is it. And it has Michael Vartan and Bradley Cooper. GUH.
Lastly, NCIS. Though it deals in catching bad guys who murder military personal (and sometimes terrorists), it's not CSI. The characters are so great. Including a goth lab chick. An adroable geek. A gruff but completely loveable ex-marine leader. A charming playboy.

Date: 2005-08-03 07:22 am (UTC)Someone already mentioned Ursula K. LeGuin. I'd say I agree that her works are well worth trying. Especially her Earthsea-novels are to die for. There's angst, there's striking beauty to the world, there's an OTP (at least for me, there is!), there's magic and what appeals to me, it's all very intelligent. And philosophical. You'll read the first three novels in just a few days and be happier because of it. :) And the newer additions to the original trilogy are at least as good as the originals.
And even though you said you're not a visual person and haven't gotten into comics because of that, I recommend you give Neil Gaiman's Sandman a try. Stunningly amazing stuff. An angsty (yes, I have a thing about angsty men, too...) protagonist, fantastic mythologies (and some Shakespeare, too!) and all kinds of goodness. :) Makes me cry, laugh and everything in the middle. And this coming from a person who had never really read comics and thought she most definitely wouldn't get into any of that stuff...
Have fun finding a new fandom!

Date: 2005-08-03 03:29 pm (UTC)LeGuin? I tried watching the scifi Earthsea mini and was bored out of my skull. But I know they messed up the book, so I might give the books a try.
