So, what to do?

Farscape is over, and I can rewatch it (and do), but would like something where I haven't seen it all before.

It is years until the next Harry Potter book.

And months till Serenity.

Star Wars is done, at least until a nebulous series in the future.

Jorge Amado is dead and won't be writing any more amazing books for my pleasure.

And Pratchett's latest isn't due until October.

There is no more Lord of the Rings. And Buffy is similarly over (though it was gone long before then).

I have read Wodehouse, Dunnett, Remarque, Bujold and Dickens until I know all the books.

And the new Amelia Peabody books suck.

And "La Dame de Monsoreau" does not, but rereading it will make me bawl.

There is no Bollywood movie coming out that I am excited about until August 12 (The Rising).

And there is only (understandably) one hour a week of BSG.

So, people on my flist, I need a new obsession, to while away the time. Suggestions?

ETA: Thanks guys! Everyone has been really helpful and I have tons of candidates for a new and shiny obssession. Mmmm, I like my flist!

Well, the S1 DVDs don't come out until October 11th. You'd have to download. But it's definitely worth obsessing about.

Failing that, Angel.

I don't know....you read David Eddings? His Elenium and Tamuli series are really good. He's a fantasy writer. His stories and characters are a bit cliched at times, but it's still a fun read. Lots of humor (the serious drama kind, not he Hitchhiker kind), and he plans out his storylines far out enough that he can plant little details in the books that would go unnoticed until a few books down the road. If nothing else, the book series may keep you busy until the Next Big Thing.

Hmmm, thanks for the rec! I'll give him a try. I was recently reading Simmons' "Endymion" which I really liked, though more on an intellectual "ooh, interesting concepts" level, than "yay, character love!" so it might be fun to do a fantasy read.

Hmmm. How about "Deadwood"? Season One dvds are out, season two dvds should be out this fall (I think). There's doomed romantic love, lots of angst, amazing acting, and the best writing for TV I've ever seen (yes, as little as I like admitting it, it's even better written than BSG or Firefly).

Assuming the (extreme) profanity won't turn you off before you can give it a chance ;->

Forgot to mention, "Sopranos" are pretty good. Only saw the first season, but it's quality TV! Get the DVD!

Also. are you a Star Trek fan? Ron Moore explored the same stuff in DS9 that he's doing for BSG. You might want to catch some of the latter DS9 episodes (I'd say season 3 onwards) to get a feel for his earlier works. Think happier BSG with slightly less angst. But he ties the themes of prophecy, religon, government all nicely together.

Might I suggest the Forsyte Saga by Galsworthy? It's about 700+ pages of Victorian soap opera with star-crossed and unhappy lovers stifling in the repressed environment of the 1890s. There's also a very lavish recent tv version of it that is currently replaying on PBS.

Otherwise, hm... Quantum Leap? Not very romantically angsty, though.

Check out Jim Butcher's books. He just put out a sixth book in his Dresden Files. It's about a wizard/private detective in Chicago. Solid world building, great characters and generous with the snark.

I echo the Deadwood & Veronica Mars recs. Deadwood is almost the only show my roommate & I both like...and that's saying something. I'm a new friend, so I don't know all your tastes yet, but if you haven't checked them out, there are some interesting closed fandoms-Wonderfalls was great and run by Tim Minear.

If you're looking for another OTP, could I suggest Alias? It has one of my all-time fave OTPs (canon, too - Syd/Vaughn) and season 1 kicked some serious backside. Season 1 (and 2) was good for the angst; season 3 kind of lost the way there for a bit; season 4 has been BRILLIANT and ended with an absolute (angsty!) corker. As far as I know the first 3 seasons are out on DVD and season 4 should be out shortly. Season 5 will start airing sometime early next year?

My Best Friend with uncannily similar tastes likes Alias a lot. The one ep I tried watching randomly had Syd pretend to be a Russian and thus lost me as she had (of course) really bad accent while everyone pretended she didn't :)

But the angst on it sounds VERY promising...

Since you seem to like OTPs, how about Nikita/Michael from La Femme Nikita?

I also love Dune. It's SciFi, though not you type of "bunch of people on a starship" SciFi. Personally I think it's very angsty and romantic. There are books (only the first 3 are really worth reading), a movie and two mini series. If you are just for watching maybe how about the second miniseries (better technical quality), simply because I'd love to hear your take on it.

Since we normally don't have the same taste, I could be totally off base though :) But Dune is a real SciFi classic. Well, that is, if you haven't read it already.

I know you've already got a whopper list, but... Are all you people X-files phobic? I loved the earlier x-files. Basically, actually, till they ixnayed Mulder and brought on that idiot Dogget... blundering non-beleiver fool. Geh.
Freaks me out repeatedly, but once you start, it's impossible to stop watching. I caught the first season over Christmas while it was snowing, and became hooked.

Also, have you read any Ursula K. LeGuin? I liked the Tombs of Atuan, couldn't get into much else. Garth Nix is another possibility, he wrote some good things. Don't like his most recent stuff though. Seems like everyone's pushing the envelope a bit too much, getting too cocky once they know they've got a good thing going. Which is when The Splat occurs.

My fandom is just fine as is. Lee/Kara is high maintenance, and I don't even write or run anything!

Veronica Mars reruns are on Wednesday at 9 pm on UPN, and Friday on CBS at 8 pm.
There are tons of websites dedicated to helping people get caught up on the show. marsinvestigations.net is a good one.
(I got obsessed with VM without seeing it as well, because that's how all of my obsessions begin, and I found that it was fairly easy to catch up on. There are transcripts from [livejournal.com profile] picklepocket for every episode.
I would also recommend the show "Lost". It's fantasy, which you like, character oriented, and sort of epic, in a way.

I'm gonna throw in my noms here too.

Stargate. You gotta find someone with the DVDs, especially the first three seasons. (Sci-Fi also does repeats nearly every day.) Dr. Daniel Jackson and Colonel Jack O'Neill. Two of the greatest characters *ever*.

I'll also second Alias. If you're looking for a great nailbitter show, this is it. And it has Michael Vartan and Bradley Cooper. GUH.

Lastly, NCIS. Though it deals in catching bad guys who murder military personal (and sometimes terrorists), it's not CSI. The characters are so great. Including a goth lab chick. An adroable geek. A gruff but completely loveable ex-marine leader. A charming playboy.

Thanks to the time difference I'm a bit late with my comment, sorry. :)

Someone already mentioned Ursula K. LeGuin. I'd say I agree that her works are well worth trying. Especially her Earthsea-novels are to die for. There's angst, there's striking beauty to the world, there's an OTP (at least for me, there is!), there's magic and what appeals to me, it's all very intelligent. And philosophical. You'll read the first three novels in just a few days and be happier because of it. :) And the newer additions to the original trilogy are at least as good as the originals.

And even though you said you're not a visual person and haven't gotten into comics because of that, I recommend you give Neil Gaiman's Sandman a try. Stunningly amazing stuff. An angsty (yes, I have a thing about angsty men, too...) protagonist, fantastic mythologies (and some Shakespeare, too!) and all kinds of goodness. :) Makes me cry, laugh and everything in the middle. And this coming from a person who had never really read comics and thought she most definitely wouldn't get into any of that stuff...

Have fun finding a new fandom!

Date: 2005-08-03 03:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Heee. I liked Gaiman's "Neverwhere" (a proper novel), but was left a bit cold by "American Gods." He is a distinct author, that's for sure.

LeGuin? I tried watching the scifi Earthsea mini and was bored out of my skull. But I know they messed up the book, so I might give the books a try.
