So, what to do?

Farscape is over, and I can rewatch it (and do), but would like something where I haven't seen it all before.

It is years until the next Harry Potter book.

And months till Serenity.

Star Wars is done, at least until a nebulous series in the future.

Jorge Amado is dead and won't be writing any more amazing books for my pleasure.

And Pratchett's latest isn't due until October.

There is no more Lord of the Rings. And Buffy is similarly over (though it was gone long before then).

I have read Wodehouse, Dunnett, Remarque, Bujold and Dickens until I know all the books.

And the new Amelia Peabody books suck.

And "La Dame de Monsoreau" does not, but rereading it will make me bawl.

There is no Bollywood movie coming out that I am excited about until August 12 (The Rising).

And there is only (understandably) one hour a week of BSG.

So, people on my flist, I need a new obsession, to while away the time. Suggestions?

ETA: Thanks guys! Everyone has been really helpful and I have tons of candidates for a new and shiny obssession. Mmmm, I like my flist!

Where can I find it? (I know it's on hiatus right now).

Well, the S1 DVDs don't come out until October 11th. You'd have to download. But it's definitely worth obsessing about.

Failing that, Angel.

I tried watching S1 of Angel, but barring the Buffy/Angel ep (big B/A shipper), it just failed to grip. Should I start with a later season and give it another try?

I don't know....you read David Eddings? His Elenium and Tamuli series are really good. He's a fantasy writer. His stories and characters are a bit cliched at times, but it's still a fun read. Lots of humor (the serious drama kind, not he Hitchhiker kind), and he plans out his storylines far out enough that he can plant little details in the books that would go unnoticed until a few books down the road. If nothing else, the book series may keep you busy until the Next Big Thing.

Season two of Angel is pretty good....lots of angst for Angel when Darla, his maker and lover comes back. I really liked that season.

Hmmm, thanks for the rec! I'll give him a try. I was recently reading Simmons' "Endymion" which I really liked, though more on an intellectual "ooh, interesting concepts" level, than "yay, character love!" so it might be fun to do a fantasy read.

Angst is gooooood. Let's see if my local video chain has it.

The Marvel universe offers GALAXIES of stuff, and you can rest assured that you'll never catch up (spoken by one who is trying to right now, and failing miserably.)

I am not a very visual person, so comics generally don't work for me, as I tend to skip over pictures, and go straight for the words. But I do know their world is supposed to be good and complex!

Hmmm. How about "Deadwood"? Season One dvds are out, season two dvds should be out this fall (I think). There's doomed romantic love, lots of angst, amazing acting, and the best writing for TV I've ever seen (yes, as little as I like admitting it, it's even better written than BSG or Firefly).

Assuming the (extreme) profanity won't turn you off before you can give it a chance ;->

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, the Elenium comes before the Tamuli series, so read it in that order.

Also, those two are his more adult series---not the NC-17 kind, the more mature writing type of thing.

He wrote Belgariad and Mallorean first, then Elenium and Tamuli later, so the books kind of "grew up" in maturity with his fans.

His Belgariad and Mallorean series are more geared for the mid-teen age range (think the later Harry Potter books, maybe a bit more mature than that even). I read the Belgariad and Mallorean when I was in middle school but didn't get into the Elenium until high school b/c it was a bit sophisticated for my taste....So if one series doesn't peak your taste....

Profanity doesn't bother me any, and I know our local Blockbuster has it, so I know what I will be checking out soon!

I've been seeing love for it all over the flist.

Thanks!

Forgot to mention, "Sopranos" are pretty good. Only saw the first season, but it's quality TV! Get the DVD!

Also. are you a Star Trek fan? Ron Moore explored the same stuff in DS9 that he's doing for BSG. You might want to catch some of the latter DS9 episodes (I'd say season 3 onwards) to get a feel for his earlier works. Think happier BSG with slightly less angst. But he ties the themes of prophecy, religon, government all nicely together.

Might I suggest the Forsyte Saga by Galsworthy? It's about 700+ pages of Victorian soap opera with star-crossed and unhappy lovers stifling in the repressed environment of the 1890s. There's also a very lavish recent tv version of it that is currently replaying on PBS.

I doubt it'll become an obsession for you--in fact, I'm not even sure you'll like it, though I'd hope you would if you can get past the first 2 eps--but I'd like to maybe show some Escaflowne to you. Since you dissed me by buying Kenshin and all. :-P

Otherwise, hm... Quantum Leap? Not very romantically angsty, though.

Nope, no House or CSI because I don't like "___ profession" shows. Lost is a bit too weird for me, but HDM? I should give it a try.

I think I've been scarred by too much Trek. But this just reminded me that I actually *gasp* never saw any B5. Must remedy...

Also, have you read much Orson Scott Card? I'm kinda over him, but I remember I really loved his books earlier. And they are angsty.

(And have you read MY book?)

Oh, I read and adored the book...especially the very first novel. So beautiful. I didn't care for the recent adaptation because I didn't like the actress playing Irene.

Your book, hmmm.

I am getting to it, but it doesn't sound "obsession material" :)
