OMG, filmi_girl, we HAVE to go see Mongol !!!!

Mr. Mousie and I just got back from it and it's AMAZING.

AMAZING.

Mongol chronicles the early life of Mongolian Warlord Temujin, the gentleman better known to history under his bestowed name of Ghengis Khan. It's about his life leading to his becoming the Khan of all Mongolia (apparently this is first part of a trilogy).

Best movie I've seen all year, by far: gorgeous and stark (oh, the way it's filmed), both incredibly alien and yet very recognizable and familiar. I love. I love both that the people aren't modern Westerners in exotic dress but something of their own and that also they are incredibly understandable and human.

If anyone had ever told me I'd find Ghengis Khan (a) someone to root for and (b) totally hot despite the beard, I'd have thought they were insane. But in a lot of ways this is a character study and the lead actor is amazing as Khan, incredibly intense and both magnetic and frightening, and the story really makes him a man of his times and yet does not gloss over the whole 'kill your enemies NOW' mentality.

But my heart belongs to Borte, his wife. OMG. I have not seen such an awesome heroine in years. Without doing ahistorical things like fighting alongside or what not, she is still by far the toughest woman I've seen on screen. Incredibly hardcore. Wow.

So go watch!
