I am only about five minutes into The Princess' Man but I am gasping for breath, borderline crying, and already utterly obsessed. I haven't seen an opening this good and grim and gorgeous since Chuno.

We open on a sepia credit sequence which took my breath away:

And we learn very quickly that a political massacre is going on - a politician (who later becomes king) orders his political opponents and their families exterminated and the one escapee, Park Shi Hoo's character, is actually nothing of the sort - he's been allowed to let go so he, unsuspecting, would lead them to his father, the future king's chief opponent and number 1 murder goal. When the assassins arrive, he tries to save his father but is very outnumbered and soon, he's cut down and his father dies in front of his eyes.

And as he lies there, likely dying, he flashes back to this:

Did I mention she is the daughter of the politician who ordered the massacre? And his one true love?

Yeah. When Korea says it's going to do a Joseon Romeo & Juliet, it doesn't fuck around. The death toll in this drama is going to be insane. Chances of it ending happily? 0.08%, give or take.

I'd watch more but I must go to bed. ARGH! I bet I will dream of this. I believe I have found my new, post-City Hunter obsession.

I watched it earlier since WBDS subs weren't/aren't out yet. (Haven't checked since as not enough time to watch a full ep left.) Pretty fun, though I admit that right now I just want the heroine and the princess to sneak around having adventure and the guy running around behind them for damage control. (I'm sad that the girls seem to be set up as future rivals, as I thought their dynamic was fun.)

Also, the princess trying to seduce her teachers is probably one of the best illustrations I've come across for how abysmally boring it must be to be expected to be proper and decorative and never be allowed to do a single thing besides recite lessons, walk in the garden, and be pretty. (It's such a safe "seduction" too, because nothing would ever come of it. It's mean of her, but I can see how she'd grasp on to that as an outlet for boredom and frustration.)

BTW, the lead actress makes me think of a younger Lee Da Hae. (Well, she looks younger. Not sure how old either is.)

So glad I am not the only one watching this drama! Have either of you watched the second episode yet?

The politics is surprisingly historically accurate (although the whole Seung-yu/Se-ryeong story is made up). Seung-yu is such a goofball! (It's nice seeing Park Shi Hoo no longer playing jerks with a heart of gold.) I also thought Se-ryeong and Princess Gyeong-hye's dynamic was adorable; alas, by second episode, it is already starting to fall apart. But the cause seems to be about more than just being rivals over Seung-yu and heavily due to the fact that Prince Sayang wants to take over the throne after his brother's death, so at least there's that aspect to it.

Ep 2 doesn't have full softsubs yet.

I actually don't think I've seen any of the mains before, except maybe Gyeong-Hye.

This looks so good. I'm really excited to watch it. Sadly, it must wait until after City Hunter. So, I'll start next week!
