Tashan: so stupid, so fun
May. 3rd, 2008 01:30 amJust came back from Tashan.
Tashan is a Bollywood movie, in which an English-obsessed mob boss Bhayaji (Anil Kapoor) finds out sneaky femme fatale Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) used the help of hapless English teacher Jimmy (Saif Ali Khan) to disappear with his cash. Bhayaji hires 'retrieval' small town thug, Bachchan (Akshay Kumar) to bring wayward Pooja and the cash back, and the story goes from there...
It was arguably the stupidest Bolly movie I've ever seen and I could feel my braincells dying.
I was also incredibly entertained. And mmmm...Akshay.
So ultimately, a 'Yes, go see it!' from me.
ETA: This is such a tribute/throwback to 70s movies. Can't you just see it with Pran in Anil's Role, Shashi in Saif's, Amitabh in Akshay's and Hema in Kareena's roles?
ETA2: This movie gloriously makes no sense and works both despite and because of it. It is even more free-form then Dhoom 2, this maker's previous, so I am eagerly awaiting what movie he makes next: it's going to be abstract :D
ETA3: In all the randomness, craziness, and hilarity, Akshay/Kareena sort of stole my heart. It was all so unexpectedly, genuinely sweet. Yeah, I am a sap.
ETA4: Oh, OK, thoughts on performances are: The movie totally belongs to Akshay and (to a lesser degree, as his role is smaller) Anil. They own this flick. Akshay is fast becoming one of my favorite Bolly stars and this movie works basically because of him, here, being funny and ridiculous and endearing. And Anil looks like he had a blast. I used not to care for him too much in leading man roles (though I did love Lamhe and 1942, so maybe I should re-investigate) but I love him so much more that he's gotten older and does quirky stuff. Saif is competent, of course, but it's a role he (or almost anyone) could have done in their sleep, so I am really wondering why he signed on, especially since it's sort of secondary. Well, they can't all be Omkara and Parineeta. And Kareena veers between scarily skinny and quite cute and I rather liked her in the role, but it's not going to win her any awards, obviously.
ETA5: Akshay fights ninjas, people. Ninjas!
ETA6: Worst song picturizations ever. Ever. UGH.
ETA&: I promise replies to everyone soon.

Oooh I wish they could retrospectively remake Tashan. That would be AWESOME.

THEY WERE. So totally. :)
Akshay totally stole the show and Saif's character was kind of a dick. I recently read a review where the writer talked about the director's conscious decision to portray Akshay's non-English knowing 'Hindi heartland' character positively and Saif's, in all his English-proficient excellence, rather negatively. He had not much to do, and what he had to do, well, wasn't amazing. I thought Saif-Kareena, in a different movie, a movie that actually focuses on their pairing, could be an amazing jodi.
Oh, and of course the fact Saif got almost no backstory but Kareena-Akki got a long, super-sweet backstory also says something.
Ninja-fight = A+++
Song picturizations ... CRACK. That's all. Delicious crack. I rather like them, actually. ;)
Overall, I was not let down. :)
