Powerful Opponents: my canon-dar is very confused!

I am having this totally huge dilemma with Powerful Opponents, which has not happened to me before in all my drama-watching days! I fluctuate between OTPs like the wind. What I mean is, it isn't one of those 'I love the Secondary Guy so much, but prefer main OTP, so just want Secondary Guy to get someone else and be happy' (My Girl) or even 'I prefer Secondary Guy with Heroine but know it won't happen' (Bull-Fighting).

No, here not only do I ship Heroine/Hot Bodyguard when they are together, and Heroine/President's Son when they are together, and heck, Hot Bodyguard/President's Son when they are together, but, worse, I genuinely cannot figure out which way the drama wants me to jump. Not only is it not the usual, Main Girl, Main Guy, Secondary Guy, but instead three main characters, but nobody will convince me that at least at this point in time TPTB do not want us to ship Heroine/Hot Bodyguard.

I watched some bits from the raw of ep 6, and you have got to be kidding me! When he is super-depressed, and she is trying to make him feel better by offering to be his sparring partner in kendo, and they do the whole, lovingly shot thing with fighting-as-dancing, and a romantic-sounding song on the soundtrack, and random bodyguard watching with a 'this isn't routine practice' look on his face (in case we missed the hints), then...seriously. Come ON!





We start with Gwang Pil incredibly upset, and trying to work his issues through practicing (no idea what he is upset about, and do we care?)



He even broke the practice kendo stick!





And then he hears a noise and turns and camera pans to:







YESSSS!







This was so incredibly balletic, I sort of died. Mushy song in the background also helped.



















In case we are still in doubt of the shippiness of the scene, Bodyguard who sort of likes Heroine, sees and looks away...











And it all ends with a lot of staring. And to top it off, Gwang Pil is fixating about in the steam room:





AND while putting on his clothes:





And in case we are in doubt of shippiness, we get this scene later. Once again, no idea what is going on.

Heroine is all upset and splashing her face:



When a handkerchief magically appears!









She took it!









Mr. 'I never smile' is actually grinning!



And so is she:



D-E-A-D



I defy you to think TPTB don't want us to ship them!

I have this problem with Cantarella and xxxHolic and Big O and Nobuta wo Produce. I recommend you just take the OT3 route. It's easier.

I just realised with a pit in my stomach that one of the three of them is going to die (Gwan Pil?). The two survivors will be together.

Why would one die? Doesn't seem like that kind of heavy drama to me.

Hong Gil Dong is sort of sui generis in that kind of switcheroo, and it was based on a famous legend with an unhappy end :)

Hmm, I don't know. I have a feeling this can easily turn into heavy angst drama.

I am not trusting anything after Hong Gil Dong. :D The legend I have read about on soompi had a happy ending with Hog Gil Dong becoming a king in some other country..

I read some other indication where after it all he got tried for treason and executed (HGD, I mean) but since I haven't read the original sotry, no idea. Hmmm...

PO is light 6 eps in, but I don't know...don't see it being too angaty. Never know of course.

Heeeee... I think it would be good to have angst in this drama, re: death. YES. I think I am all for crazy twisted plots with Powerful Opponents.

Yes, I totally agree with you that drama does not give you exactly who it wants you to ship. it is turning out to be suprisingly wonderful except in the previews for episode 7 it seems like the heroine is starting to fall for the president's son? then the hot bodyguard who has avoided being secondary guy till now will start to become secondary guy! AH!
