Largely POTC centric
May. 6th, 2007 08:52 pmSeeing that Pirates of Caribbean: At World's End trailer reminded me of how much I adore Will/Elizabeth.
They are such a huge ship of mine.
I am a complete sucker for the guys who are extremely capable and good at adventuring but have no interest in it. Will is really really good at doing derring-do, piratical things, but all he wants is to live with Elizabeth and have a normal life. And I am a super-sucker when they are paired with clever, strong-willed girls who are a lot more morally flexible about things. Will is a Boy Scout. Elizabeth is a real pirate at heart. And she loves him because he is like this. And he loves her because she is like this. And they are (as
meganbmoore put it) utterly single0mindedly obsessed about each other.
Mutual monomania is sexy.
I will be most annoyed if the third movie ends up Jack/Elizabeth. I get Jack's pull for Elizabeth, I do: he is a lot closer to her, character-wise, so free-wheeling, congenially amoral, like she is. Will defines straight arrow. But that is the thing. There is pull there for her, but that is all there is.
As
crumpeteer put it, Jack is someone you have a brief fling with, and Will is the one you marry.
And I always go for the straight-arrow guys. Cyclops over Wolverine, Will over Jack.
My fave:
And this is not connected, but must rewatch Lord of the Rings trilogy (though I am an Aragorn, not Legolas girl).
And I am through episode 6 of Blood + and it's amazing. Amazing. It just might be the most beautifully animated thing I've seen. There is one scene where Haji and Saya are confronted by a 'mouse' and the way they move, the way he fights, clearing way for Saya to charge with her sword, utter fluid grace of her movements, and their shadows, her collapsed on the ground, and the light from the windows. It's to die for.
I love it. This is going on my Top 10.
Best Friend is now hooked on anime as we watched these together. Now she is going to watch Ceres and Full Metal Panic (I showed her some of both and she loved them). And she wants to check out Otogi Zoshi.

Date: 2007-05-07 01:45 am (UTC)I think what all the Jack/Elizabeth people miss is that a nice, normal life isn't just what Will wants, it's what ELIZABETH wants. She wasn't hunting them down to clear her name, she was hunting them down to get her man back. If she thought there was a way to safely be with Will without bothering with Jack and clearing their names, she wouldn't have bothered, but A) she didn't feel like being a fugitive for the rest of her life and B) Will would never go for that, as the idea of not keeping his word would NEVER enter his mind.
And OMG that full body kiss...I swear, the girl almost got her wedding night(I blame her being irked about being deprived of that for a lot of her behavior in the second movie) right there on the beach...only the audience held them back.
*ponders starting the POTC rewatch tonight*
From what you say about the animation in Blood + and the pic and vid you've shown me, I'd say you'll definately at least like looking at Otogi Zoshi and Witch Hunter Robin.
Still on ep 1 of Basara?

Oh yes.
Re: Will/Elizabeth. I like my ships to be functional. There should be outside forces and what not but they should be inherently stable. I can see them together ten years later. J/E? No way.
Plus, they are so obsessed with each other.

Date: 2007-05-07 05:37 am (UTC)I like my ships either insanely disfunctional, or functional with outside influences. Get rid of the pesky pirates, and Will/Elizabeth is perfectly normal and comfy. In manga, get rid of all those silly interfering things like, you know, plot, and Kyo/Tohru, Shuri/Sarasa, Miaka/Tamahome, etc. are pretty much normal kids falling for each other.
Here's how I see Jack/Elizabeth if it happens: A month or two of hot sex, then one night he gets too drunk, she tosses all the rum overboard and they're 3 weeks from port, huge fight, and then they kill each other.

Date: 2007-05-07 05:30 am (UTC)I didn't mind the J/E implication because I think a lot of it they were trying to misdirect the audience so when the kiss would happen we'd be all shocked that she acrually used it to trick Jack to chain him to the ship.
I could buy the unwitting attraction: there is something similar in the two of them, and it's very free and she is a frustrated frustrated girl (who wouldn't be when deprived of wedding night with Orlando Bloom). But I never got the sense that it was anything more than that. She is still fixated on and in love with Will. I cannot see her ever doing to him what she did to Jack at the end, e.g.
Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind and be annoyed after the third movie. We'll see. But that trailer with the kissing on deck looked mighty promising :)
