People on metaquotes. They are busy being all smug and "oh, bombing! we/they Americans are so melodramatic. It didn't bother me at all!" and other people trying to outdo them by posting things like "9/11 was just a bombing we blew out of proportion and are being melodramatic about" and "I was only having songs about fires stuck in my head or just criticising Bush's speech on 9/11" like it's some kind of sick competition. No, it's NOT COOL to say you weren't affected by 9/11 or today or whatever. Innocent people killed are not funny, nor are they merely a fodder to feed your self-obsession. It just makes me think you are a solipcistic, shallow twit who should be whacked over the head until it flattens into the right shape. The utter feel that the world is all. about. you. is wrong. No, you are not mature, grown-up, or cool. You are just disgusting.

I am sick.

ETA: after seeing some further posts on metaquotes, I've unsubbed.

I'm not even on the same side of the political spectrum as you and I totally agree. Now how's that for sanity? ^_~

It's just I keep thinking about people who died, or whose loved ones who died, and then I see the smug teenyboppers posting about how it's overreaction and how not caring makes them cool and I see red.

Because they're young and stupid and think that death and tragedy will never hit nor affect them.

I didn't mind the dark humor - whistling in the dark has gotten this species through a lot of bad times - but I don't get the whole ratings system where one attack is worse/better than another and someone is more/less "cool" about how they react. Pointless wierdness.

On the other hand - No, you are not mature, grown-up, or cool. Exactly my opinion of quite a few groups, mostly fandom_wank.

It's like some perverse competition. The smug air is what gets me the most. Ugh.

Word.

I am sure some of the posters are fairly young (their "I am soooo mature" is a dead give-away), but that is no excuse. It's never too early to start being a human being.

I've noticed the posting over there myself and I find that everyone seems to be taking this a bit tritely. There is a time for dark humor and there is NOT a time for dark humor, and 5 hours after the tragedy happens is not it. And this whole "it doesn't bother me" competition that is going on makes me feel ill. It SHOULD bother you. People dying senselessly SHOULD bother you.

I know. The feeling of "I am so much cooler than you because I am unmoved by suffering" contest is just making me sick. It just exposes your deficiencies, not something that you should be cheering about.

The ones that get me are the ones now being all "it's just our sense of humor so don't get your panties in a wad, you stodgy old ladies" that are making me angry. If that's your sense of humor, it's not funny. This is the mentality of people who light cats on fire and hang dogs because it's so frickin' hilarious. Gyah. It makes me mad more than anything. I'm sure it would be stupendously funny to them if they were horribly disfigured in a car wreck or what not. People, where is your empathy? At least pretend you have a modicrum of conscience.

And the whole "look how much the Americans over reacted about that whole 9/11 thing" just makes me furious. Posting like that isn't even FUNNY is the thing. The quotes don't amuse me, they're just tasteless.

Exactly. The more I read it today, the more livid I got until I finally unsubbed from that group. Saying "oh, you overreact" is a. not funny b. insensitive and c. I would like to see the poster keep that attitude if he or she got maimed.

Things like this just make me utterly sick. There's no worse-than/better-than scale-- any attack where innocent lives are lost is a tragedy, one that deserves sympathy and compassion.

Sometimes human beings absolutely confuse me.

I know. Tragedy brings out the best in some people, but utterly the worst in others.

Amen, sister. The whole U.S. is still recovering from 9/11. We just don't recognize it for what it is--PSTD. We see monsters in shadows, and buy big, big guns to protect ourselves from them. We let our government leaders pick on people who can't defend themselves, because it makes us feel more potent and distracts us from recognizing their complete failure in terms of protecting the populace. People who think 9/11 was nothing, well, they're just not looking around them.

The USA PATRIOT Act could not have been passed without 9/11.

The war in Iraq might not have been waged without 9/11.

And the Republicans might not have completed their hostile take-over of the government without 9/11.

Sigh.

On the plus side, as a woman, it beats living in 1905 :)

The entire bombing has shocked me deeply, considering I was right there less than a week ago. But I'll admit that the initial HP comment on metaquotes made me laugh. It's the massive outpouring of non-chalance that bothers me. I don't know whether people are purposely being callous or if the troll is motivating people to emphasize their casual reaction to the situation. The whole thing is... messed up.

I think the people there ar showing their emotional age, which is 2. Only a non-psycho 2 year old would probably be more mature.
