Courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] crumpeteer linking to a a hilarious take on a comic, I have just discovered the Anita Blake series of books by Laurell K. Hamilton.

Oh My.

The hilarity!

I knew it boded well when the author and her letter to her mean picky fans appeared on Fandom Wank.

Heeeee.

This is dreadful. It’s like all bad, Mary-Suish, poorly edited, pr0ny fanfic you could desire. With vampires. And, I kid you not, wererats.

YES.

I will not read them, but flipping through them?

Priceless.

Sample quotes:

"I looked up into his eyes to see if he was teasing me, and I couldn't tell. You try reading rat faces."

"I took one more thing to bed with me, a stuffed toy penguin named Sigmund. I don't sleep with him often, just every once in a while after someone tries to kill me."

"As long as he didn't flash that smile at the wrong time and get us molested by nuns, we would be safe."

And those are supposed to be the good ones.

It used to not be so bad. The novels used to be good in a trashy way. The mysteries used to be pretty good. Now it's all five way sex and little else. My favorite part now has been LKHs insistance that if you don't like her writing then you just aren't smart enough to get it. I love pretentiousness.

I read that letter and laughed like a maniac. I guess I am just not deep.

heh.

In my life, filled with romance novels, urban fantasy, manga, etc., I have been forbidden to read exactly one series of books by people who wanted to maintain my purity and innocence, and that was the Anita Blake series.

This was by my coworkers at waldenbooks, one of whom was the gay assistant manager, the other the SHA active woman who regularly pimped romance novels and urban fantasy at the store.

I flipped through a book and could see why. Though truthfully, I've read worse.

I love the Anita Blake books because they are so cheezy! The longer ones get kind of tedious, but the early books are fun.

I tried one in the bookstore today. And failed :)

I skimmed about one and a half books of her Merry Gentry series. Bad. Bad bad bad. Fanfic bad. But smutty.

Merry Gentry? You are kidding. That's her name? Ugh.

Yeah. Short for Meredith.

She has to shag as much as possible because she needs to get pregnant in order to become queen and stay alive. Or something like that.

I read an early Anita Blake once and it was fun in a very trashy way but then I picked up a later one and it was AWWWWWWWWWWWFUL. It's basically porn.

On the LKH "you don't get my books because you are stoopid" thing the Smart Bitches who love Trashy Books kind of rip her a new one in a very awesome way.

I really liked the early book in the series (in an 'entertaining trash' kind of way), but the later books have really turned me off the series since they are mostly just bad porn with about 90% sex and 10% plot :P.

LKH's attitude towards her readers and the earlier fans who have been disappointed at the direction the series has taken is also pretty off-putting.

I am totally within spitting distance of Laurell K. Hamilton! Okay, more like get in my car and drive 15 minutes... but totally close.

I'm also once person removed from her. She's like my friend John's godmother. She's always thaking his dad, Mark Sumner, in her books.

Heeeeee. I guess I should be mum then :)

Does she have a harem of her own?

From what I hear of her, she's pretty wacky, so I wouldn't put it past her...

I read about her books in the Fandom Wank post. I didn't think they were serious about vampire Mary Sue pr0n. Guess they were. Wow.

How does this shit get published, is what I want to know.

She knows someone's dirty laundry? No idea. I confess they are not the worst published books I've seen.
