Yes, I know I've gotten a bit Hong Gil Dong obsessed. No, I do not plan to stop. Here are screencaps from ep 14.
Got all of them from soompi, supposed to be credited to DC.
I just like this shot because of the steam:

Frankly, I have no idea what this is about, and don't care. I just like the thought of a sword at Creepy Goth Girl's throat.

*thud*

*double thud*

I love this bit with GD and Gom:

Ugh, Chang Hwe. I want to murder you. He is deliberately setting GD and his father against each other, is manipulating GD to bring down Lord Hong. Also, he offers to help get GD's men back only if GD steals the &&^%$& sword for him. Really, Chang Hwe! If Yi Nok knew, you'd wake up with bits missing.

Grrr. Why do all their awesome romantic scenes take place at night!!!! Apparently their conversation at that scene, according to hjkomo (I am quoting) from soompi is as follows:
YN: Gil Dong ah...touches his arm...I....
GD: I'm not going to die.
But I'm worried about you...am burdened...you're faster than an arrow...running after me...
......
So, don't be next to me. I have to run in order to live. I can't turn around to look at you/make sure you're there.
YN lowers her hand. That's right. Let go, just like that.
YN: then, I'll just watch from afar. I won't run after you...
Is that okay?
GD: Can you do that? Can you watch from afar even if I get caught?
YN closes her eyes.
GD: That's right. Close your eyes like that. It's better if you don't look.
She opens her eyes, and he's gone. (~ wide screen shot from above ~)
*dies*

He is about to turn himself in:

And that is why Yi Nok is so amazing. She watches Gil Dong turn himself in to save his men with this shining look on her face:

And he looks back at her. *dead*

Taken:

Do you know, I am getting the same irrational reaction I did every time Kenshin got his clothes torn (in this case, GD's are torn and bloodied). He is poor, he can't afford new ones, be careful! Heh.

Gil Dong is having a day from hell:

In case his day isn't sucky enough, he has to deal with Creepy Goth Girl, who begs him to sell out his comrades in order to live. (Note the difference with Yi Nok).

But never fear! Nutty King isn't all muttering about ghosts and killing peasants. For now, he is pleasantly surprised meeting a new courtesan candidate:

Who happens to be Yi Nok looking all gorgeous in courtesan dress (well, the cap is from a bit earlier, whatever)! Because she is going to act out as courtesan in front of mad King to help GD get the ***** sword. (The lady who was supposed to do it, couldn't). God, I love Yi Nok. She will brave anything to help GD and will be good at it, too! (I am dying to see GD's reaction to this though. Having to see her with nutty King probably ranks high on his list of worse things)

But, wait. Duty before pleasure. The bring the King a little present: Gil Dong:

And one of the shots I love. I think Chang Hwe just found out that his %&*^^ manipulation got Yi Nok at risk.
And in unrelated news, is anyone else excited for Ashutosh Gowariker's romantic epic Jodhaa Akbar opening this weekend? It tells the story of the marriage of Mughal Emperor Akbar and Rajput Princess Jodhaa and how it turns from arranged to love. There are palace intrigues, battle scenes with crowds of extras and real elephants, some scary hotness and chemistry, and OTP swordfighting.

I was excited about it but also apprehensive. Gowariker did make the awesome Lagaan and even more awesome Swades but this movie was taking forever which is usually a bad sign. However, the reviews are (shockingly) almost uniformly positive. Yay!

Date: 2008-02-14 10:19 pm (UTC)I love love GD and YN. She's so strong for him.
And that is why they match so well. I think he needs her unconditional love but he also needs someone to stand by him and trust him (but also not blindly or stupidly, but because at base they share the same values).
And Crepy Goth Girl? Very selfish. She is not evil, but that scene shows precisely why they could have never matched, even if YN didn't exist: to do what she suggests would be completely repugnant to everything he is, and she can't understand it. She would make him weaker, not stronger.
no subject
Date: 2008-02-15 12:58 am (UTC)Anyway, I do think GD and YN match so well, because they grew up the same and as you said share values. They have always shared a special bond, and it is only getting stronger.

No, I don't think she or Emo Prince are evil. Just terribly lonely and/or selfish people. Well, CGC is the selfish one, really. She may care about DG, but I think her "love" is totally selfish. She wants him to act/think a certain way. . . she wants that cool guy, but she also wants him to do what she wants and not think about others.

I am totally worried about the upcoming revelation to GD and YN about not only YN's true social status but also the family enmity thing. Yikes. They keep making GD more noble in behavior so I am getting worried he will get all sacrificial. Argh. Both MG and DGCH for me had this one moment of such horrid angst for the male lead that I still haven't gotten over it (in MG, it's the scene at the end of ep 14 with Gong-Chan pleading with his grandfather and in DGCH it's the scene at the airport) that I sort of dread something of the same here.

Oh, yes! I think, in general, korean drama writers love to have that one huge moment of horrid angst for their male lead. That "I've-lost-her-forever./Please-I-just-want-her." moment. The moments in MG and DGCH were heartbreaking. I recently finished What Happened in Bali. . . that poor man had more "I've-lost-her-forever./Please-I-just-want-her." moments then any male lead I've ever seen. The bar scene (banging his head over and over) in Que Sera Sera is just awful too.

Date: 2008-02-15 10:13 pm (UTC)True. Though since I logically knew the OTP in MG and DGCH would end up together and still ended up freaking out, I have grave fears for my sanity regardless :) But I'll hold onto that prologue image the way I am holding on to my knowledge of the ultimate end of QSS what with my current watch of doom :)
Oh, yes! I think, in general, korean drama writers love to have that one huge moment of horrid angst for their male lead. That "I've-lost-her-forever./Please-I-just-want-her." moment.
Oh yes, and they always get me.
The moments in MG and DGCH were heartbreaking.
Yes. I confess that I have huge difficulties now watching Grandpa from MG and Uhm Tae-Woong in anything without first having to overcome the instinctive 'ugh, hate HATE' reaction :)
I recently finished What Happened in Bali. . . that poor man had more "I've-lost-her-forever./Please-I-just-want-her." moments then any male lead I've ever seen
Yes. When I was blogging about Bali, I would get incoherent about that very thing. I mean, if I had to pick the most awful moment, it would be a heck of a competition. Hmmm. Maybe his grovelling to his awful father (HATE) begging to be allowed to have HJW? Oh, Bali just killed me, seriously.
The bar scene (banging his head over and over) in Que Sera Sera is just awful too.
Yeah, that would definitely be the 'horrid angst moment' in QSS for me too (though I am on ep 11, so who knows, there might always be something to eclipse).
Oh, now I am flashing to Capital Scandal and its moment. Yikes. Are there any kdramas who don't have it?

Date: 2008-02-16 12:37 am (UTC)QSS is addicting. I watched the whole thing is two days. It's so angsty and yet so good. Just keep remembering the end, because. . . oh, the angst! HGD will be okay, the Hong sisters do angst, but they don't do ANGST!. Besides, the OTP are two people that are still together, even when apart. I mean, after a year YN was still in love with a "dead" GD.
I mean, if I had to pick the most awful moment, it would be a heck of a competition. Hmmm. Maybe his grovelling to his awful father (HATE) begging to be allowed to have HJW? Oh, Bali just killed me, seriously.
Oh, that scene killed me! It was so freakin' upsetting. I also got upset over the phone scene in, I think episode fifteen. The episode after they have sex. She calls him, and he knows if they speak/see each other, she'll get hurt. So, while he's trying to hold back emotions, he's pushing her away. I hated that, because she was starting to give in to her love for him. And. . . oh, God! Plus, the scene where he sees her and secondary guy aka "Mr. Emotionless 96% of the Time" kiss, and he sinks down behind the way, nearly sobbing? I died. And the ending? With her finally saying "I love you" and. . . ah! So angsty.
I kind of hated the show, because if it weren't for money and family, they could have been together.
I don't know who wrote Bali and who wrote QSS, but if they did a show together - it would be the most angsty, perfect show ever.
Yeah, that would definitely be the 'horrid angst moment' in QSS for me too (though I am on ep 11, so who knows, there might always be something to eclipse).
There are tons of "horrid angst moments" ahead - for all involved. But the ending. . . worth it.
I am flashing to Capital Scandal and its moment.
Because of all the CS talk and pretty icons, I've started it. I've watched up to episode four. Plan to watch five and six this weekend. So far, there's no angst for either the main OTP or the secondary OTP. But, I hear it's coming. I dread it and yet, I look forward to it.
I wonder what GD's big "horrid angst moment" will be like? He hasn't had his big moment yet. I'm sure it will be when the past comes to light.
Are there any kdramas who don't have it?
Some sitcoms, maybe. And maybe the more family-comedy type dramas. There is always angst (usually thanks to the secondary leads or family members or both), but some shows do have less angst. Did Full House have a "horrid angst moment", I think it just had a "slightly upsetting angst moment". Family-comedy type dramas just have "slightly upsetting angst moments", really.
I think there's something wrong with me - I look forward to the "horrid angst moment", as there's usually some great acting in those moments. Coffee Price, Tree of Heaven, Que Sera Sera, Bali - some of their best moments were angst-scenes.

Date: 2008-02-16 12:58 am (UTC)Yeah, eps 8-9 almost killed me already and I've heard it's going to get worse.
the Hong sisters do angst, but they don't do ANGST!.
Though I have to say the scenes in My Girl when Gong-Chan looked for her at tha airport, a=or later in ep 16 when she'd lie to push him away to protect him, or all the scenes in DGCH when she had to break MR's heart over and over and over in order to save him from the attempted rape charge? I couldn't cope at all. Total incoherent sobbing territory.
I also got upset over the phone scene in, I think episode fifteen. The episode after they have sex. She calls him, and he knows if they speak/see each other, she'll get hurt. So, while he's trying to hold back emotions, he's pushing her away.
Oh yes. And how he has to pause between sentences to even be able to have enough control over his voice so she won't hear him sobbing and how he is just falling apart. And it's so horrible because it took him that long and so much effort to finally win her (it's like with some sort of a skittish wild animal) and she finally allowed herself to love him back only for him having to push her away (and her actually chasing after him, OMG. OK, just thinking about Bali is making me upset).
And the ending? With her finally saying "I love you" and. . . ah!
So horrible, horrible, horrible. And how even before she says it, you can see it's beginning to sink in, what he's done and...GRRRRR. I have NEVER hated a character as much as I did Jae-Min's father. Ever. He is just so beyond unforgivable.
I really need to see Jo In Sung in something happy. I've only seen him in this and A Dirty Carnival and he was excellent in both but they were both so depressing.
I don't know who wrote Bali and who wrote QSS, but if they did a show together - it would be the most angsty, perfect show ever.
I don't think I'd survive it!
So far, there's no angst for either the main OTP or the secondary OTP. But, I hear it's coming. I dread it and yet, I look forward to it.
It has some truly spectacular moments. *bites tongue*
Did Full House have a "horrid angst moment
Yes it did. When he said he was divorcing her and those scenes in eps 14? 15? 13? I remember being very upset.
Coffee Price, Tree of Heaven, Que Sera Sera, Bali - some of their best moments were angst-scenes.
I love Tree of Heaven but it was one giant angst scene. So good though. So good.
I wonder what GD's big "horrid angst moment" will be like? He hasn't had his big moment yet. I'm sure it will be when the past comes to light
probably. I am both dreading and anticipating it.
no subject
Date: 2008-02-17 04:50 am (UTC)Those moments were bad, I'll grant you that. However, they didn't make me sob, because I knew the OTP would get back together. There just had to be angst, for the sake of angst. Still, I hated that the girls had to break the hearts of the boys they loved, in order to protect them.
Oh, I am with you! The scene with the phone was one of the saddest and most angst-filled scenes in Korean drama. Just the way he's trying so hard to control himself, and the way you just know she's so confused about his new behavior.
And how even before she says it, you can see it's beginning to sink in, what he's done and...GRRRRR. I have NEVER hated a character as much as I did Jae-Min's father. Ever. He is just so beyond unforgivable.
It's the moment he does it, that look that spreads over his face (Jo In
Sung is so wonderful at displaying raw emotion.) is so heartbreaking. When
he goes to her, and she's in pain and crying and he's just holding her hands and holding back sobs. . . God, it's a perfectly angsty scene.
Jae-Min's parents are snobby a-holes. I hate to be rude, but it's true. Making their son marry some woman he hardly even likes, let alone loves to keep their family in good standing. What is this, the middle ages? Ew, his parents sucked.
I really wanted them to just run away together after his dad threatened her.
I really need to see Jo In Sung in something happy. I've only seen him in this and A Dirty Carnival and he was excellent in both but they were both so depressing.
I know his other movies are happier, or at least have happier endings. His other dramas either sound angsty or happy, but dull. In his newest film, he apperently plays the lover of a king. So. . . that probably won't end well.
Yes it did. When he said he was divorcing her and those scenes in eps 14? 15? 13? I remember being very upset.
Oh, yeah! It's been, like two years, since I watched the show. I had forgotten those scenes. But, to me, the angst was unneeded. I kept screaming: "You don't have to do this. You love each other, just stay married and grow together. Don't leave."
I love Tree of Heaven but it was one giant angst scene. So good though. So good.
It was good. I loved the angst of it and the chemistry between the leads was just perfect. The whole show was just heartbreaking scene after heartbreaking
scene. But, when they were happy it was adorable.
GD's big "horrid angst moment" is something I look forward to. Almost as much as the "big I love you exchange moment".

Date: 2008-02-17 07:18 am (UTC)Oh, I inhaled that drama at a crazy pace. So good. When he begged that other guy to stab him because otherwise he'd go after the heroine? EEEE. And so much chemistry, even with no kissing. I became a total Lee Wan fangirl after that drama.
Oh, I am with you! The scene with the phone was one of the saddest and most angst-filled scenes in Korean drama. Just the way he's trying so hard to control himself, and the way you just know she's so confused about his new behavior.
She must think he just wanted her for the conquest and the sex and now that he's gotten it, he doesn't want her any more. Ohhh :(
I really want to rewatch Bali now.

Yeah, the movie sounds awesome but not happy. I do want to track down a comedy movie he did about his character falling for a North Korean. Even if it sucks, the novelty of his getting a happy ending will keep me occupied.
And eeee, I know! I keep waiting for both the angst and ILY on GD's part.

I think I watched the whole drama in a day. I think I watched the 'stab me' scene three times in a row. Lee Wan was perfect in that role. So much chemistry that it was insane. They didn't kiss, because the actress was like, fourteen or fifteen, but it wasn't needed. Their chemistry just jumped off from the screen. Those scenes in the bed? AH! Or, the scene at the graduation party, where he grabs her and they fall to the floor? Or. . . so many great scenes between them.
And the mob guys were adorkable. But, that cousin was like, insane. He hits her and than she loves him? What? I feel like a missed something.
She must think he just wanted her for the conquest and the sex and now that he's gotten it, he doesn't want her any more. Ohhh :(
I know, right? So, she went off to the other guy. Who was nice, but not the one she loved. I just finished it, but now I want to rewatch it.
Yeah, the movie sounds awesome but not happy. I do want to track down a comedy movie he did about his character falling for a North Korean. Even if it sucks, the novelty of his getting a happy ending will keep me occupied.
You just know he or the King will end up dead. Oh, if you find that (possibly happy)movie let me know. I know The Classic and Madeleine had happy endings. He didn't die and he didn't kill anyone. Oddly enough, I don't think many of his films/dramas are subbed. At least, I haven't found many.
And eeee, I know! I keep waiting for both the angst and ILY on GD's part.
Yes, I'm waiting for them! We know YN loves GD. Hell, everyone and their dog knows she loves him. She might not know she's in love with him, but everyone else does. And, we know he loves her. But, she's been more open in regard to her feelings. So, I'm awaiting his big ILY moment. And, YN has had some angst moments, because she thought he was dead. So, it's GD's turn to have that big crying scene. I'm sure Kang Ji Hwan will blow us away with those scenes, just as Sung Yu Ri did with hers.

Date: 2008-02-19 04:04 am (UTC)Re: CS. Yes. Oh, I couldn't bear the torture scenes. it's different if it's a big strapping guy, but she is so tiny.
I am so glad you like CS. I have seen it twice so far and loved it both times, to bits. What do you think of KJH in it? And the secondary OTP?
no subject
Date: 2008-02-19 04:15 am (UTC)I'm liking CS a lot. Since the subs for Robbers and HGD are delayed, CS is keeping me busy. (When I should be studying!) KJH is really good in this. He has great timing when it comes to comedy, and I love his playboy 'tude. The scenes where he was reading poetry to try and get YK to like him, but she was bored? That was a great scene. Plus, I love the way his character is just so into YK - it's very cute.
The secondry OTP is awesome. Beyond awesome! They are so mature and adult about everything. No stupid games, and no love square with these guys. No, Secondary OTP are just wonderful, mature, adults with a heartbreakingly honest storyline. Plus, their brother/sister 'ships with the OTP are great. Very sweet and real.
no subject
Date: 2008-02-19 04:23 am (UTC)Yeah, he really seemed to be enjoying the torture (now there is a man who gets job satisfaction, yikes).
KJH is wonderful in this, I agree. He is a rare actor who can be both totally hilarious and yet five minutes later be all still and dead serious and just make me cry or melt. I also love how his character comes across as basically a very nice, not too messed-up guy.
Secondary OTP is my favorite secondary OTP in dramas. They are so complicated and reserved and...guuuh. I also love the friendships in this. I can't recall seeing a hero and secondary female ever just having s friendship, nothing more or less, in a kdrama.
no subject
Date: 2008-02-19 10:29 pm (UTC)KJH is really impressing me in CS. He goes from hilarious to bemused to anger to dead serious in one episode, and he never misses a beat. Perfect, perfect, casting with his CS role. (And his HGD role.)
The secondary OTP is so wonderful because of that complicated and mature nature that they both have. In some ways, it's almost as if the secondary OTP should be the main OTP - they are that dramantic.
I also love the friendships in this. I can't recall seeing a hero and secondary female ever just having s friendship, nothing more or less, in a kdrama.
Yes! All the friendships and backstories are just brilliant with this drama. I love the friendship between the male lead and secondary female lead, because it's so fresh and new. Finally, a strong secondary female lead that doesn't turn into a bitch because she "loves" the male lead! And, the friendship between the female lead and the secondary male lead is just so adorable and sweet and yet very real.
