Yup, still dramaing

dangermousieOh, Beautiful Days, you are such a dangermousie-pleaser, aren't you? People, they reconcile amidst cherry blossoms. In the rain. And later go to karaoke where she gets Mr. Icicle to sing. 'I love you' singing. See why I thought she was destined to die? I mean, a few eps ago they gave us running on the beach! These things are never supposed to end well in kdrama, so I remain shocked at the happy ending here ;) I suppose they thought giving Hero a dead mother, a disturbed sister, an Evil Father, a martyr stepmom and quasi-brother from hell, plus making him lose his inheritance at one point, is enough to give the guy a romantic break. Hmmm.
I'd be more touched by Ugly Brother's help in getting Hero and Heroine to reconcile if it wasn't for the fact that they wouldn't have gotten into a fight of the century if it wasn't for him. I mean, Hero can be jealous and insecure and has huge difficulties with expressing emotions (he is much better when he is matter-of-fact nonverbal about it, like at a point during a dinner when he stretches out his hand and just holds hers, while looking at the menu) but I could certainly see why he got boiling mad when:
a. He asked Heroine out to a fancy place, to formally introduce her to his sister as his OTP
b. Heroine said yes
c. She called and said she won't be there after he waited for hours.
d. He came into his dark office to discover Heroine and Ugly Brother there, shadow-playing the piano and what-not
e. After the fight, Heroine told him if he is finished talking, he should leave.
Basically, shut UP, Ugly Brother! When she is about to go off on that date, he stalks her, and when she finally says she has to go for the date, he disconnects her cell-phone and mandates she give him one day 'at least.' UGH. Heroine is much more prone to be moved by martyr routine, than I am. And then instead of explaining situation to the Hero, he is all 'I wanted to spend time with her, blahblah.' No wonder Hero thinks she is playing games and stalks off.
The funny thing, and the reason I like BD, even when melodrama kicks in, the character 'feel' is realistic and right. Of course Hero has trust/relationship issues (and admits he does) and it's hard for him to work through them or open up. See his psycho family. And the Heroine, very conservative and calm as she is, is also no push-over, but they are both somewhat reserved people and so it's hard for them to work through everything. His emotional gates are shut pretty tight and she is not the type to enjoy banging on them. But of course she is steadfast in her feelings, which is even better for someone like him.
I loved their break-up scene, very grown-up. But then eeeeee, cherry blossom reconciliation is awesome.
Also, the stuff about Ugly Brother not being Evil Father's bio son came out. I loved the scene of Hero's confrontation with Evil Father. I also love when he tells Ugly Brother he envies him because now UB has the opportunity not to have Evil Father in his life. Dude, that is one messed-up family. Ugly Brother, otoh, whined his way through this entire problem. What a shock.
I think the thing I like most about BD is that it does something not often done in drama: it gets the couple together very early (and 'together together' not one of those arranged marriage type stories where they have to learn to care for each other) and the bulk of their interaction and the story is really about them learning to deal with each other and their love and working on it. I mean, their love isn't in doubt: there is never some 'other woman' for Hero (one he likes first, or who chases after him or whatever). And while Ugly Brother would love to get it on with the Heroine, she is never in doubt she likes Hero and never leads Ugly Brother on, and even the Hero is not really in doubt about her lack of feelings for UB, not really. Basically, what they have to deal with is to maintain their relationship in the face of external factors (his psycho family, her eventual illness) and, even more interestingly IMO, internal factors, such as the fact that he is a workaholic, and someone who finds it hard to open up and trust, or express himself, someone who is unsure how to act in love or someone who needs to deal with his own insecurity. Or the fact that she is a little too quiet, and finds it hard to express what she really wants to others (as opposed to with him, where she will push back). I find this sort of thing much more interesting than 'will they ever discover their love' type stuff.
Cute BD mv, even if you have to endure Ugly Brother.
In other news, I adore Robbers but am trying to hold off until I make sure Hero of it isn't going to drop dead. Nosebleeds in dramaland are a total sign of doom and I WILL NOT BE PLEASED if he dies here. He needs to redeem himself and find happiness with Lee Da Hae. YES. He'd better. I am OK with a little jailtime though (which one of the stages is bargaining, anyway?)
Oh, and I am working on a huge meta for Coffee Prince and a list of Top 10 twdramas and jdramas. Let's see how this goes.

Why do I have the feeling that AFTER they resolve the trust and redemption conflict, he's only going to discover that he has a terminal illness so that Dal Rae can finally get to have closure with the death of a loved one? With that, I can even see why they're making the other guy really stable. He can comfort her when Oh Joon bites the dust.
Still though, I would not be pleased either. Grrr, dramas.

It's a bit weird, because while I am OK with most clothes in this drama, the hair is atrocious. Hero has blonde (!!!!!) hair, which he carries off because I love his character too much.
