I am on episode 9 and The Legend continues to be amazing. I am just so in love with it. I have also been amusing myself imagining what kind of fandom/fanfic things there would be if this was an American show.
(1)I can certainly imagine wall-to-wall Ho Gae/Dam Deok slash (they are wounded somwwhere and are forced to rely on each other and find out their lurve is existent! and true! Eleventy!) After all, if Dam Deok's reaction to finding out Kiha worked for Ho Gae was hugs and lurve, why not the same reaction to Ho Gae himself? ;)
Also, I think said slashers will make Sujini the resident shipper faghagYaoi fangirl for slash couple (as at this point in the story she is not really in his pants, and is a tomboy). And as a consolation prize, and be equal opportunity, they can femslash her with the awesome leutenant of the crack troops, who is so tough that when she is pinned by a giant sword to the wall, yanks the sword out herself.
Heh. Sad thing is, I would totally read this.
(2) Hmmm, what else. Endless shipper wars between Kiha/Dam Deok shippers and Sujini/Dam Deok shippers. With cries of 'story pushes feminine women aside' or 'you are unfeminist because you dislike Sujini for not being a traditional woman.' Slashers from (1) will at that point come into the discussion and be superior.
(3) I never undesrstand it, but it always happens: a minor hot character getting adulation. The second in command of evil elder, will totally get a lot of fic pairing him with everything under the sun. After all, he is deadly and evil (but not entirely so, he attempted to help Kiha once), is hot, has anime hair, and wears a covering on his face.
(4) Lord Yon or Evil Elder (or even the King) will have a long lost daughter, who will be sparkly and good and love unicorns. On seeing her, Dam Deok, Ho Gae, or Secondary Dude with Face Covering (or any other future upcoming hotties), will forget everything and lurve only her. She will rescue the world.
(5) Dam Deok etc are secretly EBOL. It is the Evil Elder and the Tiger Tribe who have been misunderstood through generations! They are cooler, they are hotter, they have shinier fingernails!
(6) Babyfic! I mean, in addition to an canon babies, we will suddenly be awash in fanon babies. Kiha learns to love Ho Gae (yes please) and they produce 12 children with long names! Like Alarimisissinisa, their eldest, who is the prophesied Heir to Shiny Things and will not just save the country, like the Jooshin King, but save the entire universe.
I really wish there was a fandom for this :D
Also, I was thinking how your first impression of an actor really does affect you. Because a lot of reaction to The Legend (or its existence) has been 'Bae Yong Joon playing manly sword-wielding Prince? WTF, isn't he the guy who was all emo and weepy and possessed of blue scarf* in Winter Sonata?' But for me, since the only thing I've seen him in was Untold Scandal, the main feeling is 'Oh thank God! At least this time, while he might be a violent, period-garbed aristocrat, he is not a violent, period-garbed aristocrat who is a disgusting slimeball ruining virgins.' LOL.
*I have never seen so much dislike heaped on a single item of clothing. To those people I say, go check out the fashion in twdrama 'Magicians of Love.' I defy you not to develop such blinding hate for all of Fernando's (yes, that is his name) wardrobe that anything else will pale in comparison.
In other news, because of
miss_dian's shiny post, I started also watching the adorable Korean movie My Little Bride and it's beyond awesome. It's a cute, sweet, under two-hours Korean movie about Sangmin, a college student (played by the adorable Kim Rae Won) who has grown up with the spunky Boeun (played by equally adorable Moon Geunyoung), who is currently 15 (I think. Or is it 16?). Their families have always been friends, but Boeun's eccentric grandpa decides to move it all up quite a level by asking Boeun and Sangin to get married! To each other! Obviously, neither has any interest in such a match: Boeun is only 15, about the most serious relationship she is interested in is a crush on a hunky fellow student. Not marriage with much too-old-in-her-eyes, and much too-well-known Sangmin. And Sangmin is even more disinterested. He wants to continue picking up hot college girls, not settle down with a snotty, bossy girl he sees as a little sister.
Grandpa, being not only eccentric, but crafty, does manage to get his way, by pulling the old 'I am dying at this moment, grant me my last wish' card. So the world's most ill-assorted pair are hitched, if in name only, and planning to get rid of this bond as soon as possible (example: Boeun, who obviously doesn't tell anyone in school of this development, continues to plan her date with Hunky Fellow Student). Can the two of them ever find love with each other? Do they even want to?
Huge kudos to this movie for taking an idea that would normally make me cringe incredibly badly (15! Yikes! Though I suppose not as bad as Buffy/Angel, age-wise :P) and somehow managing to make it wholesome and sweet and awwww-inducing (at least so far, I haven't finished it yet). In large part due to the stars. I have never seen Moon Geunyoung in anything before, but she is adorable and fun, but, even more importantly, her character is hardly meek, weak, or secondary to anyone. She can outboss anyone, unlucky Sangmin included :D So the usual power-imbalance I worry about in age-different relationships is gone. I have seen Kim Rae Won before and adored him: he has a certain 'nice guy' vibe that comes across very strongly in everything I've seen him in, which really really helps. Sangmin is an immature kid, really, which is also a necessary thing. There are a lot of Korean stars whom I love who I would totally cringe to see in something like this, even if they are the same age as KRW, because the vibe is much more grown-up or complicated.
Anyway, it's a fun movie.
In other news, Oscar Nominations are out.
I am glad of the following:
1. Viggo Mortensen for Best Actor. He was amazing in Eastern Promises. I mean, I bought him as a Russian.
2. Best Picture nomination for Atonement. Yay. I am glad that my third-favorite movie of the year got in, seeing that my Top 2 (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Lust, Caution) got almost completely overlooked. On that front, yay for Casey Affleck's nomination for Supporting Actor for Assassination of JJ by tCRF. Yay! Best, most overlooked movie this year.
3. Beaufort, Katyn, 12, and Mongol as Best Foreign Picture noms. And Persepolis in animation. Because that means I get a chance to see them on big screen.
4. Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd. Because he is Johnny Depp.
5. There Will Be Blood's eight noms. You go, Upton Sinclair! :)

Date: 2008-01-22 05:37 pm (UTC)And yep, I love MLB but as I whined to miss_dian, do not own it on a proper DVD (just a VCD, ack). I may have to try and find the Region 1 dvd or something. And yeah, no freaky power imbalance. She's got more guts than he does, which is beyond amusing. Like "hey my wife is 15 and I still always have to do what she says". XD

Date: 2008-01-22 06:16 pm (UTC)Ugh, so sick of Johnny Depp! Yes, he's been great in some movies, but he had nothing to do and wasn't impressive in the slightest in Sweeney Todd. How long can we consider him an artiste for just doing one-expression shticks for entire movies through! ('Cause this is, like, his fifth. And four of them have all been with Tim Burton.)

Date: 2008-01-22 06:22 pm (UTC)I like him. I have no idea if he is a great actor. Probably not. But I find him very fun to watch which is all I require.

Date: 2008-01-22 09:08 pm (UTC)I love Kim Rae-won here. He does come across fun and I really like that he has enough range to play someone slightly comical and immature (and for once, he doesn't kiss! :) He makes me cringe watching his kissing scenes, seriously.)
Moon Geun-young needs to do something soon. She's all grown up from this movie and Song Hye-gyo's younger alter-ego in "Autumn in My Heart."

Date: 2008-01-22 09:13 pm (UTC)Heh. Usually for me it's because the actress is trying so hard not to kiss, it's making me LOL. In Love Story at Harvard it was rather hilarious.

Date: 2008-01-23 03:22 am (UTC)I am seriously considering shelling out money for this one, if it comes with halfway decent subs. It seems so awesome, though, that I want to watch it immediately, instead of/while waiting for shipment.
Now, where can it be got (by any means necessary, i.e., paid or otherwise) *with subs*? Because I have scoured the four nets and d-addicts seems to be the only place, but my Internet is sadly retarded and I've had problems with torrents since forever.

Have also joined esthetique AND megaupload (premium style). Why is Internet so SLOW?
I normally hate creating new accounts for things, but you have so wholly convinced me of the must-watchedness of this drama that I am going out on a limb here to acquire it. *kicks megaupload* Faster! Faster!

Oh well, this is probably better on my hmwk status. :P
Thx, dangermousie, for the help!

Date: 2008-01-24 02:45 am (UTC)Woe. I think I'll just have to try and stream it from veoh.
Re: P.S.
Date: 2008-01-24 02:56 am (UTC)Have you tried dling raws from veoh or crunchyroll? Might be faster.
Re: P.S.
Date: 2008-01-24 04:38 am (UTC)This explains why I have not watched Jumong past the third episode.
I have tried dl raws from veoh (crunchyroll is out as cannot find it on there), but it took so long to get 5% of an ep that I resorted to streaming it from veoh and just watching it with 5 second pauses in between scenes (thanks to me godawful internet speed) and I just have BSplayer opened to another drama (Tree of Heaven, HEE) but with Legend subs and I hide most of the BSplayer screen behind veoh and that is how I got through 2 episodes of Legend. *tears hair*
See why I have resorted to BUYING the thing. Ahahaha. Let's just hope it is worth the money.

I can see the slash happening, but I was never a fan of slash.
I WOULD DEFINITELY READ BABY FIC LOLOLOLOLZ.

I. . .did not know that was a popular thing to do in fanfic. HMMM.
To be frightfully honest, I'm kind of happy there's no huge fandoms for Asian dramas because then I would have even more time lost, tracking down fanfic and stuff. Although there are times when I lament the lack of fanfic.
