You know me. Would I like it, would I hate it, would I be screamingly bored?

Hard call, imho.

Lacks the genuine angst I believe we both love ;->. A couple of the characters really annoy me, and the writing...isn't that great.

But it *does* have something that keeps drawing me back to watch, and I do enjoy it. There are a couple of characters I do like (Captain Jack and Gwen), and their situations pull on my angst kink strings, even when the show itself doesn't make much of what *must* be there.

I vote you give it a try and see what you think.

Good idea, thanks!

Well, it's not so much with the OTPs as the random gratuitous making out and/or sex in all possible combinations. And the angst was sort of iffy (it was there, but they didn't get into it much). Besides that, it's just...not really a terribly well-written show. I found I got bored with it pretty quickly, and while we have very different taste, it doesn't strike me as something you'd like much.

That makes sense. Thanks!

I'm not a fan of Torchwood. I can't say for sure that you wouldn't like it, but I think it's a weaker show than Doctor Who and really the rather raunchy content sometimes puts me off (especially since DW is so clean).

I don't mind 'adult' stuff if necessary but just for randomness sake is annoying. Oh well, I have tons of other things to watch...

I don't care for it, so you might love it. ;p

Heh. That doesn't always work. There are a lot of things either of us dislikes, even if for different reasons :)

I loved it (shhhh...actually sort of more than Dr. Who). The characters are great, and the cases are interesting. Plus Captain Jack? MMMMMMMMMMM.....

More than Dr Who? o_O :)

I really did like it a bit better. Maybe because I love Captain Jack, or because it was original stuff, and I didn't feel like I needed all this background like I sort of did with Dr. Who. Plus, I think that Gwen and the captain have potential OTP written all over them.

You'd like it, but you'd have to hang in there for a while.

Also, Captain Jack, duh!

But I have such a short attention span :) Which ep should I jump to...

it took me a couple episodes to warm up to it, and i didn't go in with high expectations. but by the end of s.1, i was all a-squee. i think one of the things that worked or me is that instead of DW Jack v.2.0, we instead got Broken!Jack -- while he could still be snarky on the surface, he has this dark river of suicidal angst running under it all. he suddenly became much more appealing to me that the DW Jack v.1.0. say hello to my kink.

i expected from promos i saw to hate gwen -- not my type of heroine. by episode three i decided she was totally kick-ass. everyone else is screaming for character development (there was an interesting Toshiko episode, but they could have done so much more!). i'm hoping season 2 remedies this. oh, no im not. i'm watching s.2 for Spike James Marsters. and the promised hot violent sex with Jack. they better deliver.

it's not a strong show writing-wise, but it is good candy. i liked some of the episode's premises/mysteries, and for me, sometimes that is more interesting that OMG!OTP! if you can snag the british downloads, do. the show is improved by the bad language. :)

The thing with Jack is I find him amusing but not hot. Well, we'll see :)
From: [identity profile] eccequambonum.livejournal.com
same here. but i think if you put him in a gratuitous sex scene with James Marsters, hottness will be a result ;)

hey, with the way you fast forward through things and watch it, i say give the first three or four eps a try and see what you like. i really liked several of them at the end. one of them creeped the beejeebers out of me. . .

Took me a couple of episodes, but it kind of gets under your skin with its cracktasticness. That's pretty much what I always describe it as, but I can't think of better word. It is like someone wrote some crackfic and then made it into a TV show. There are some annoying characters, but Captain Jack and his coat are awesome, and there are some moments that are just hilarious. I don't think you can take it seriously or it would do your head in, but it somehow makes you want to watch more.

Plus Season 2 looks heaps better, and has James Masters in it! AND MARTHA!

It wouldn't take much to figure out what Torchwood is about. The new season starts screening in the UK in a couple of days :D

Er, I watched the first few episodes...and got impressed with how they all managed to get on the roof of all these buildings in Cardiff. Remember it being the main point of discussion in the office... Also remember an office of geeks losing interest very quickly...

I got bored in the middle and picked it up at the end again. There is some angst, hand-holding on death-bed, hints at love that is not meant to be, a life that has got tiresome...but that is towards the end...so i dont really know about the middle!

Reception in the UK seemed quite positive. The show is more adult in content with a bit more nudge nudge wink wink. Captn Jack does absolutely nothing for me, though he has a great coat and boots!!!

Anyway, the second series is airing soon and i've committed myself to watching it!

I might just watch the bits with James Marsters in it, and see if it catches my attention.

My friend who's a Who-fan thinks it blows. She's not like you, but the way she made it sound like, I doubt you'd be into it. It seems to lack an OTP, it's kind of like fanfiction on-screen.. Fanservice galore. Some people are suckers for that stuff, and I do admit the "DW for adults" does sound neat.

Ehhh, not big on fanservice. We'll see.

Well, you might've (not) noticed I totally squeed about Torchwood in August (around the 18th through 24th). I got hooked at once. There are, for sure, eps that are not so great (I greatly dislike Countrycide, for example), but on the other hand there are very good eps that concentrate more on the little oddities of humanity instead of great big alien monster thingies.

And you with your angst addiction - I'd say there's desperation of many kinds in the series. Gwen has loads, and Jack has heaps more beneath the surface. One of the best eps was the one with two Captain Jacks... Definite angsty twists, there.

I'd recommend S1 eps Ghost Machine, Small Worlds, Greeks Bearing Gifts, They Keep Killing Suzie, Out of Time, Captain Jack Harkness and End of Days. Especially the three last ones were my favourites when watching the season for the first time. Although the big baddie of the season finale is a let-down.
