Bad Love: why so good?
Jan. 10th, 2008 12:55 amIs anyone watching Bad Love? It seems like one of those dramas I'd love. Love triangles, illegitimate angsty woobies, etc etc.
Our Heroine, a cellist, falls in love with Secondary Lead, a son-in-law of a tycoon, only to find out the man lied to her, and is married. That relationship obviously ends. Some time later, her paths cross with Our Hero (played by hunky Kwon Sang Woo), the half-brother of her previous boyfriend's wife. KSW is an artist with a lot of issues, a huge chunk stemming from his evil family and the fact that he is illegitimate and has been made to feel it all his life. Oh, and his first love dumped him in some horrifying manner I have not yet found out about.

The chances of hero and/or heroine dying in the snow/of cancer/by poison? Not so great, which is already a score.
Chances of manpain and tears? Exxxxxxcellent.
And just look at this gorgeous shippy MV:
Or this. Phew. It's elevator sex with KSW and his ex. Ohmymmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I didn't know kdramas could do this!
This is getting o:o
Another vid:
A note of warning: the subs seem to have stopped, as WITHS2 is having its 'put our foot down' moment and is saying it won't continue subbing until all of their hardsubs are removed from youtube/veoh/mysoju. Obviously their right and a fair request but in which case, I say 'good luck ever seeing WITHS2 subs again' as I doubt they can control the internet.
I am not unduly worried to existence of fansubbed kdramas in general as a new sub group will form if they go away for good (point in fact, a new group formed to sub Hong Gil Dong and Robbers. I was amused to note that suddenly WITHS2 came back to life and said that they will sub just those two without lifting the moratorium in general. LOL at the power politics), and in any event, a lot of kdramas get proper releases with subs. But, as relates to this drama: to be fair, I don't know if BL will be released with subs officially as I don't think it's a huge hit.
ETA: Apparently WITHS2 just released a huge amount of subs for their current dramas, Bad Love included, as an anniversary present. So now that this hurdle is over with, go watch! :)

And such is the scariness of dramas. I find myself going 'ho-hum, another drama with sibling love and cancer, what's next, anything new?' (not with this drama) LOL.

Uhh-oh ... it is a KSW drama after all, and most of his dramas and movies end with him either riddled with bullets or dying from some mysterious disease. I guess I watch one of his romantic comedies again *sigh*
Why is it that every time a scandal occurs in the subbing microcosm WITHS2 is somehow right in the middle of it? They are subbers, not damn divas!
Subbing is very timeconsuming, I know that. It takes time to time the actual episodes, to transcribe the diaglogue, then translating it and making it short and conscise enough to get timed with the actual ep, but this is ridiculous. You cannot stop ppl from uploading hardsubs onto streaming sites. There will always be that one individual who doesn't care about policies and rules and requests (and gives a damn about fansubbers being charged with copyright issues) for that one short moment of instant gratification in form of a comment in their account with: OMG, u are so good, thx for subbing/uploading/whatever!
One way to avoid having your work up on streaming sites is to only provide soft subs. If ppl are so intend on hard subs, let them do them themselves and as a fandubbing group only release the soft subs (without the vid file) to avoid the main bulk of legal issues.

Exactly. They can't control or police 6 bln people out there, or a large chunk of them who have internet. (As an example, WITHS2 fans have been apparently bombarding mysoju with emails about this, and mysoju ignores them). If they stick to their policy, it basically means WITHS2 is dead as a sub group. Which isn't a huge thing, in the scheme of things. Groups subbed kdramas before WITHS2 was around, and as the fact that a group formed double-quick to sub two new kdramas (HGD and Robbers) shows, will form again to sub kdramas after WITHS2 is gone.
The only problem is, it affects the dramas they were in the middle of, as subbers are unlikely to pick them to re-sub. Which makes me an unhappy girl, as I wanted to see Lobbyist (which they have 20 out of 24 eps subbed, so I just might put up with summaries and Engrish for the last 4), In-Soon is Pretty and Bad Love.
Oh well, there are so many dramas out there, I think I can cope :)
I am amused immensely however, that as their two-year present they chose to lift the ban only on HGD and Robbers, precisely the two dramas which already had other subbers, and subbers which were getting a lot of praise, as opposed to other projects they were working on, which nobody took over. I think they were not wholly motivated by altruism :)
Re: KSW. He was in comedies? OMG. I find it even harder to believe than with SJS. Any recs? Wanting to make sure nobody dies is another reason I am holding off with BL. But seeing they are on ep 12 and there is no inkling of dying but lots of other issues, maybe it will have a happy ending this time.

Date: 2008-01-10 08:31 pm (UTC)Oh yeah, that is so typical. If another kdrama formerly being subbed by them would find new subbers, bets are they would release the remaining subs in no time with some other see-through reason why they release the subs anyway.
KSW has done only one comedy dorama We Are Dating Now with Chae Rim (Dal Ja) and SJS. And of course some movies, like Love So Divine, Make it Big, My Tutor Friend.

Date: 2008-01-12 07:11 pm (UTC)Their small "exception to the rule" mentality really drives me nuts--especially since one of their "chosen" series just happened to be the highly anticipated Hong Gil Dong. I mean, I respect what they're doing and how much time and effort goes into fan-subbing (I belong to several groups myself, though I'm not nearly as active as many of their members) but honestly I'm SICK of this juvenile "I call this series" trend that's going around!
For Hong Gil Dong, the subs by that other group (though not great) were still decent, and more importantly they were FAST. And then WithS2 went all pseudo-humble, NAMED the other group that was subbing HGD, and then went on to say that two groups working on one series is a waste of time and effort. But since it's their 'anniversary', they're going to continue subbing it anyway. So of course the other group backed out (who wouldn't after being publicly humiliated by one of the most respected/popular fansubbers around), and volunteered to sub something else instead.
To me, that sounded like someone bullying a little kid, but in a very underhanded way. They should have done the nice thing and let the other team sub the new series, and continue on with two dramas that they were already working on. Or better yet, not bring it up at all, and just say they are going to continue subbing that particular series, despite their ban, because it's their anniversary. They obviously felt threatened--why else would they drag an innocent and new fansubbing group into it? That whole announcement just made it sound like they're only subbing for recognition and power.
And they can't control the internet, no matter how hard they try... so why punish hundreds of viewers for the sins of several? Besides, if the legal issue was really the ONLY problem, then why wouldn't they simply TAKE OUT the parts in the soft subs that SAYS who subbed it?! Problem solved. They can't get in trouble if nobody can link it back to them. In fact, I almost wish all groups would do that. When giving credit, what good are a list of made-up internet names anyway? If you're really doing this for fun, or as a free service, just upload the scripts randomly like they do at kloofy for movies. Or if retaining credit is more important, then only release hardsubs, and face the risks.
What I'm really saying, is that the translators/timers/editors should get to waste time subbing whatever the heck they want, guilt-free. So what if there are two versions of one series--the viewers aren't going to care! And if fansubbing groups would just let go of their ego/pride, they'd find that they don't have to either!
There. Rant finished.

You are only noticing now? Ever since they appeared in the fansubbing world, there have been petty fights involving them. They came from a much bigger group whose name escapes me now and they were like recalcitrant little brats. When they split up they lacked class and they still lack class.
The folks from SARS and JTV would never do such a thing. Esp. that policy of holding back subs or calling other subbing groups out in public. That's petty and childish.

Date: 2008-01-12 11:25 pm (UTC)Oh well, I need to get my subs somehow :)
I do have to say that they seem to have picked up their subs again, they finished In-Soon and Lobbyist and released a big chunk of Bad Love that they had done.
I do admit I always feel better with reliability of jdrama sub groups. Oh well...

Date: 2008-01-10 09:00 am (UTC)I hope somebody else subs Hong Gil Dong meanwhile. Or maybe I ought to wait for my drama order and then watch Fantasy Couple & Flowers For My Life..

Date: 2008-01-10 04:01 pm (UTC)They have stopped all of their subs except for Hong Gil Dong and Robbers. Which they promised to do as promptly as ever. (I am amused that those are the very two that another sub group formed to do when WITHS2 handed down its ultimatum. I think they didn't want to be displaced :P)
So you (and I) are OK :)
I think the only dramas really affected are the few they have been currently subbing. I did want to watch Bad Love, and In-Soon is Pretty and Lobbyist, but ultimately, oh well...By the time I would have gotten to them, it would probably be 2015 anyway.

But why is it strange? They are both very appealing :) Unless you mean for them together, but then I have so many slashers on my flist, that doesn't particularly seem odd to me either :)
Man-pain + Elevator sex + angst ? OK! Count me in...
And there are tears, too :)
I just want to make sure nobody dies :)
