So, I was watching the first two eps of Can You Hear My Heart, basking in the warmth and sweetness. Surely, it's odd to ship the two kids the way I do Woori and Dong Joo? But they are such adorable, sweet, loveable, quirky darlings:
I was blithely ignoring the darker undertones and then ep 3 happened and...
and...
and...
Oh my God.
My jaw literally dropped.
Wow.
And while we are at it, please please have a giant boulder crush Dong Joo's stepfather to death. I'd say DJ will need decades of therapy after inadvertently witnessing stepdaddy gloat over and kill DJ's grandpa over inheritance, but something tells me with that family (e.g. creepy creepy mother of Maru, i.e. stepdad's bio son) that isn't going to be anything compared to issues characters are going to get later.
ETA: Yup. DJ just fell off the ladder after witnessing all this fun from it and hit his head. I see head trauma in your future, young man. And, if you are lucky, some memory loss. Also, nnooooooooooo! Who is going to teach Woori to play the piano? She is waiting for him and then decides he got bored with her and forgot :(
ETA2: I love DJ's bio mom who found out about her husband using her and having a kid with someone else, and all during attending her father's funeral while her only kid is in a coma, and she still has the smarts and will-power to keep it all to herself because she knows she is not in a position of power right now. Thogh I cannot forgive her for trying to get revenge through Maru - the kid is innocent and is a child, leave him the hell alone.
ETA3: Frell!!!! Ep 4 was as cheerful as eating nails. OMG, the stuff that happened to Woori and Maru's family is awful and they are still kids! And Woori's Mom and poor Young Gyu and also, Maru will totally feel guilty, even though he shouldn't. Ugh, die die die evil stepdad and your shoddy safety practices. Hmmmm. Jailtime for some! Therapy for all!
ETA4: Dong Joo woke up with his hearing gone and the drama does show how terrifying it must be (not getting into personal details or TMI but I sort of know how it feels, and it sucks, and my situation wasn't nearly as bad).
ETA5: OK, the whole DJ's Mom 'adopting' Maru dynamic is fucked-up as all hell but I really love the bond between Maru and DJ.
Also, even though I want to shake DJ's Mom for refusing to have him learn sign language because she wants to pretend he's normal, normal, normal - she's dealing with a horrible situation and she clearly loves her son, even if she needs to express it differently - yelling at him to speak because he can talk (though not hear) is not productive. I can sympathize with her desire for normalcy for him, especially since I doubt Korea (or most other societies) is welcoming of handicapped people, but you are going to screw him up for life, lady.
The shocking thing? I loved all the children eps and am sort of sorry ep 5 is the last time they will appear. I marathonned four eps in one sitting - this is how obsessed I am.
