Favorite sizzling Bollywood moments
Jun. 13th, 2005 01:28 pmNow, most Bollywood movies are known for their sensual restraint. Most of them have no kissing, and I have yet to see a movie with nudity. Yet, despite that (or perhaps even because of it), Bollywood movies have some of the sexiest, most temperature-raising moments ever put on screen.
I am going to list my Top 10, but would love for fellow BW-lovers on my list to add any (or disagree). These aren't necessarily the most explicit scenes or even the hottest, as I have listed here the ones I subjectively like. This means in movies I like, with actors I like, and romantic (Yuva had sizzling scenes but the Rani-Abhi relationship was way too disfunctional to end on this list). Also, I'm not listing any movie more than once. To everyone else on my flist, who couldn't care less about Bollywood, I'm seeing ROTS again tonight and will have more SW commentary tomorrow.
So, without further ado, here are mine:
1 Shahrukh Khan and Kajol's rain-drenched dance in the gazebo in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Are they friends? Lovers? Something in between? I don't think even they know when they hide in a lighted gazebo during a storm and he kneels, dressed in black, dripping wet, and extends his hand asking her (wearing deep red and also soaked) for a waltz. And as they dance, it becomes something else entirely.
2 Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee's "morning after the wedding" in Bunty aur Babli. She might have passed out from wine on the wedding night, but when she wakes sleeping Abhishek and asks him to "marry" her and they start kissing, as the screen dissolves into one of the most sensuous picturizations I've ever seen (her wearing nothing but his vest, as silouettes making love in the car, being pushed against the wall), I was surprised the celluloid didn't melt.
3 John Abraham and Udita Goswami in Udita's fantasy of making love in Paap. She pictures him coming into her kitchen where she is cooking, and soon she is smearing him with flour, the pots are falling from the table and I am staring in shock. Hot!!!!
4 Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan's wedding in Parineeta. One sentence: they didn't cut away into a song! I have never thought seeing merely people's faces in close-up and a glimpse of a back could be so hot. The whole thing was both sizzling and deeply romantic. I was a puddle of goo on the floor.
5 Shahrukh Khan teaching Kareena Kapoor swordfighting in Asoka. I can't explain it. But go watch it. *hyperventilates*
6 Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala in Khamoshi having make-up sex (outside of marriage, too) in a lighthouse. Grrrrrrrr....
7 Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor during the song Mere Humsafar in Refugee. There is a reason she gives birth by the end of the film. Hot, hot, hot!
8 Shahrukh Khan and Kajol during the song Suraj Hua Maddam in Kabhi Khushi Kabie Gham. I am not the movie's biggest fan, but any flick that has the two of them in the sand, and his kissing her prone, soaked in the stream body gets high marks.
9 Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta in Veer Zaara. As she imagines him everywhere, one of her fantasies is especially vivid: his coming into her room at night and removing most of her garments before carrying her to bed. If I had to endure being married to Manoj, I'd fantasize too.
10 John Abraham and Lara Dutta cavorting in a waterfall in Elaan. I wonder why I usually forward to this part :)

Date: 2005-06-13 06:03 pm (UTC)BTW, have you seen Jism yet? Because it's sorta legendary for it's love scene. (I haven't seen it, and I was kinda hoping you could tell me if the fuss about it worth it.)
Now, most Bollywood movies are known for their sensual restraint. Most of them have no kissing, and I have yet to see a movie with nudity.
I think it depends on what you consider nudity. I know I was totally shocked when I saw, what I swear was a tit-shot (from the side) in Tango Charlie, where I totally didn't expect it. And during the Kwk episode with Kokona Sen and Rahul Bose they kinda walked through the daring scenes he had done and apparently he has done both behind and short frontal nudity (he is parallel cinema, though).
I have to admit I was very surprised by the sex scene in Shabd. Simply because I have never seen BW do a 3 minute+ song dedicated to *one* love scene only.
Other than that I'm often more in favour of mini romantic scenes. Like Rani and Salman kissing through the window glass in CCCC. Or the scene between Nandini and Sameer where he is fiddling around with her clothes while the grandmother is in the same room trying to tell them a story.

Date: 2005-06-13 06:03 pm (UTC)However, there's one bit in Lagaan. It's not steamy, it's very subtle - but after 3 years of not kissing in Beauty and the Beast I'd've killed for a moment like it. Our Hero has finally decided that yes, he likes Our Heroine. So he nuzzles her shoulder and flicks her earring instead of kissing her. I loved it. Sweet, slightly silly, and yet slightly hot. (I think I'm going to dub those "barbeque moments" - sweet and hot, but not spicy.)

Hmmm, I guess I was correct in limiting it to movies I've seen. Though in the awful Naach, during one particularly horrible musical number, Antara Mali's flimsy shirt is soaking wet and you can see the nipples through it. However, most BW movies (certainly the mainstream ones) don't really have any.
Parallel cinema is a lot more "open" though. Just watch 1947-Earth. Interesting re: Rahul Bose. I think he is a very good actor, but he would be pretty low on the list of people I'd want to see strip. :D
I haven't seen Shabd. I like all the three leads well enough, but not enough to seek a movie that sounds dodgy to me just for their sake. I might check it out of curiousity, now. I prefer BW scenes that don't go overboard (I thought the Parineeta scene was perfectly done, mainly because of the editing and the fact that the characters were young and so madly in love), but I hate the overboard "come and see us kiss kiss kiss kiss" flicks.
The CCCC scene was cute. Ditto for HDDCS. I don't think they'd score on my hotness scale though. But then my favorite ever romantic scene (Raj and Simran's reunion in the fields in DDLJ) won't score on it either :)

Date: 2005-06-13 06:20 pm (UTC)I don't remember that bit in Lagaan. I am afraid unlike most people, I got bored with the movie because of all the cricket and lack of interest in Gracy. But maybe I should give it another try.
Barbecue Moments? LOL. A perfect tag.

KKHH was on the earlier side of the scale for me, but the first time I saw it I didn't like it too much because I kept expecting another DDLJ which of course it wasn't and wanted to brain SRK for falling for Rani first. But on rewatches, I fell in love. Hm, need KKHH icon.

I loved that scene.
Hey now, some of us actually like Manoj. (Apparently he got married in a secret, surprise court wedding to his girlfriend of a really long time. I was kinda disappointed when I found out... how old he was and that he had a girlfriend.)

Date: 2005-06-13 06:32 pm (UTC)Heee. I love how she says that she is going to talk about her past like it contains deep dark secrets, and in reality it's the hair pulling :D Poor Abhi :)
Hey now, some of us actually like Manoj.
Liking Manoj is understandable. Liking his character in Veer-Zaara is a whole other matter :D

That's like the first thing that came to my mind while watching KwK.
I liked Shabd (even though it wasn't "good" per se), but I've been told that I have a very high acceptance level for bullshit. Yes, the story itself was extremly weak, but it was very pretty (part of it looked like somebody went nuts with photoshop ;D) I liked the concept of it.
But if you thought that CCCC was already too much of a stretch to take the story seriously then Shabd is probably not for you.
But I was planning to put up some snappies from Shabd anyway, so you might want to check out those and then you can still make your decision.

Date: 2005-06-13 06:41 pm (UTC)The thing is, I love Salman. And really really like Rani and Preity. But while I think Zayed is OK, he can't save a flick for me. I loved Sunjay in Munnabhai, but generally I am pretty indifferent to him. And Ash? Beautiful, but stiff as a plank of wood unless in a Bhansali movie. She just has no inner warmth.
But still, pretty atmosphere goes a long way to reconcile me.
Re: Jism. True. But he is in a lot of other movies as well :)

Date: 2005-06-13 06:53 pm (UTC)Darn, I was hoping I could talk you into it, so I don't have to watch it (unless it's really, really good). BTW, it's one of the few John Abraham movies that got 3 stars at Marco's (the others are Dhoom and Saaya).
I did a long writeup on Bollywhat about what I liked about Shabd. Non spoilerish things include:
- Actors playing characters their age
- Cinematography
- Basic concept (Sanjay as a writer with young wife, potential affair of woman with younger man)
- Some of the ideas
I don't think Aish's coldness really mattered in this movie, since it's (to me) not really a relatable movie, it's not a love story and none of the characters are necessarily ... friendly. (btw, it's not a thriller, there is no violence in it at all)
The biggest problem of the movie is that it isn't sure where it is going and that the ending feels rather uninspired and tagged on (but then again, that's the way I feel about a lot of BW movies). But again, I really appreciate that the movie did *not* go down the thriller route and instead tried to do something else.

Date: 2005-06-13 07:01 pm (UTC)1. Bollywood Anonymous is just for introductions from newbies and a few Bollywhat community-based threads (pictures of members, listing of livejournals, updates on life).
2. Bollywood Masala is for general Bollywood gossip and discussion, anything from "Salman seen with a UFO" to "Feminism in Indian Cinema". It has also discussion threads for specific actors (e.g. SRK thread or Abhishek thread, etc.
2a. Masala has a small subforum called Interview Archives which is a board for posting articles about actors (that board has a thread for each actor. If there is no thread for one, a poster can start it). This is for reference purposes only, so only articles to be posted there. Discussion is to go on in Masala
3. Film Fair is my favorite forum. This is for discussion of movies. Each thread is for a movie and all discussion of it goes there. E.g. I've been balbbing all about Parineeta there on the weekend. If there is no thread for a movie, one can start it. You can alphabetize it easily to see what movies are there or not (or do a search).
4. Filmi Filosophy is a catch-all forum for less popular topics. All it has is subforums. They are:
4a. Naach Gaana: if you want to discuss anything relating to song or dance in the movies, that is the forum for you (of course, if it's part of your movie review you can put it in film fair, but exclusive and long discussion goes there).
4b. Beyond Bollywood is a forum for non-BW indian movies (Tamil, Malayam, Telugu, etc). In a way it's a combination of Masala and Film Fair (and to a degree even naach gaana) for non-bollywood or non-cross-over flicks.
4c. Polling Booth is the only place polls are allowed. They can be only Bollywood (or other Indian movie) related. It has all kinds of polls from "favorite movie of X filmmaker" to "how sexy is X."
4d. Stargazing is a forum for all the picture threads. There are threads for actors (e.g. SRK or Salman threads), or types of pictures (real life, needing funny captions etc). Of course, if these are all pictures for a particular film, you can post them either here or Film Fair.
4e. DVD Discussions is where there are threads about DVD vendors or quality/details of DVDs (e.g. when does a particular DVD ships, quality of Lucky's DVD, trades etc).
5. Lyrics: This is the forum to request translation into English of song lyrics.
6. language corner: people practice their hindi or ask about specific words here.
7. India forum deals with the southeast culture but does not pertain for film
8. world at large forum is basically Off-topc stuff that does not belong elsewhere
9. Help forum is jsut that, techie help.
3. Film Fair is for specific films only.

2. The train scene in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Ajay Devgan and Aishwariya Rai just standing close, holding each other and pretending to be so involved in each other that they don't notice the ticket inspector. Smoking hot!

Date: 2005-06-13 09:13 pm (UTC)I'd say that Bollywood is filled with these. They make me want to melt. One of my faves is Aamir's little pre-O Re Chori bit in Lagaan. I thought it was adorable. Not exactly sensual, but whatever.
But anyway, there are times when I just go through my DVDs and find the most romantic scenes (most of them SRK ones, but who can blame me! :D) and I enjoy myself quite a bit! :)

Another one I thought of that isn't particularly sizzling but still romantic I guess is in Dil Se, when Amar and Meghna are at the radio station in that dark room and he's giving her his smoldering glances. Shahrukh is a deadly weapon with those glances. He leaves a pile of swooning women behind him! :P
