OMG. I am now reading По Ту Сторону Рассвета ("On the other side of the dawn," the Beren/Luthien fic I mentioned earlier) and it just might be the best fic I ever read.
I wonder if the author of this is some sort of Russian BNF, sort of like Cassandra Claire was in Harry Potter fandom, only as far as I am aware, this author didn't plagiarize.
OMG.
BEREEEEEEEEEEEN.
Now I am frustrated that so few people on my flist read Russian....
egelantier, you might have to hold my hand through all the angst and h/c.

I tried to translate one fic of mine from Finnish to English and it turned out a completely hopeless task - the language switch portrayed such a different message. Or maybe I just suck at translating.

Date: 2007-08-16 10:13 pm (UTC)Unrelated but am curious: do you own Meteor Garden on DVD? What type of DVD (fansubs, pirated)? I'm not buying it - yet - but am veeeery close to considering it seriously as it's becoming one of those "bed or one more ep? one more ep!" dramas for me. Also, I just spent an embarrassingly long time talking to the characters in my commentary post on LJ. It's weird. I love it.

Date: 2007-08-16 10:14 pm (UTC)I own two sets. One official one, but the subs (while not crazy) can be dodgy at times. And one a burned copy with excellent subs. I can link you to that seller if you like.

All BNFs usually do.
As long as I like the person's fic, I don't particularly care about their views and I love this fic. Beren is so messed up and with h/c up the wazoo but not in a 'let me sit by a tree and be emo like a 12 year old girl' way.

Date: 2007-08-16 10:31 pm (UTC)Yeah, anything based on Silmarillion is going to be depressing.
*prepares to swoon for Finrod whom she has swooned for before anyway*
and Beren, Beren, Beren.
I am madly crushing on him even so far (I am in the really early part, when he is staying in the woods and haven't met Luthien for the second time yet, just that one brief meeting). He so need counselling and meds though.
So good.
I am in love with this fic.

Date: 2007-08-16 10:41 pm (UTC)(good thing about her angst? it can be very severe, but there's never a sign of self-puty and 'see how beautifully I suffer' in her heroes. they're just so mature, it's amazing).
one more link before I'm off to sleep - it's Белый by Lora, which is basically events of Quenta Silmarillion in Galadriel POV. it's concidered 'White Book of Arda' by some fans, and it does provides some amazing insights in her character. after this one I, for example, suddenly thought differently about her helping Aragorn and Arwen get together, and fighting Sauron - she does basically the same thing Finrod died for, this interracial star-crossed marriage, and she has a very personal grudge with Sauron - he killed her brother..
and so on and so on. it's surprisingly good

I mean this bit already made me die: - Долгое время я...
and it wasn't even heavy duty. Yikes.
'see how beautifully I suffer' in her heroes. they're just so mature, it's amazing
That's what I love too, no spoiled wallowing. Messed up or not, the man is a professional guerilla/nobleman/warrior, he is not going to sound like a 20 year old modern girl :)
Thanks for the link.
Re: Galadriel. You know, I never thought about it: she does basically the same thing Finrod died for, this interracial star-crossed marriage, and she has a very personal grudge with Sauron - he killed her brother.. but that is absolutely right. Wow.

Date: 2007-08-16 10:48 pm (UTC)ha, he's practically whole and healthy at this point. wait until they'll go under Shadow...
also, watch out for Rusko. this is one completely original character, and some readers loves him more than anybody else - and for a good reasons too.
also, watch out for really, really good polemic with Black Book of Arda. so clever, I loved it.
also, Maedhros. incredible Maedhros, much as I dislike feanorings as a whole.
really, there're so many good points to this book, I can't count them all -)

OMG. *shudder* He is going to have it worse? OMG. *braces self* I mean, there is only so much h/c and angst a girl can take.
Maedhros. incredible Maedhros, much as I dislike feanorings as a whole.
I can't stand Feanorings (bunch of annoying gits like their father) but I love Maedhros. He is the only one of that nutzo family that I love. (And no, not just because he was horribly tortured by Morgoth for ages and ages. I just love him generally, as he was so awesome. Someone should write a good fic about him).

Date: 2007-08-16 11:02 pm (UTC)and Beren? pretty soon he'll be remembering this time in the woods and his state of mind as easy-going and healthy, I'm telling you. the sheer amount of mindfucking he'll have to go through later (Sauron, remember? he likes head games a lot) is incredible, and for some time things go from bleak to bleaker. and then dungeon, yeah.
here, have some extremely good Aragorn fanfic as a rest. it's h/c, too, but of more comforting ones.

Date: 2007-08-17 06:21 pm (UTC)Yeah, and plus he was already saner than the rest even before because he wanted to turn back on the ice to save his friend when the burning of the ships occurred.
I remember a hilarious 'diary of Feanor' fic a long time ago, where Maedhros featured but don't remember where it was which is a pity.
