After watching Why Why Love, with its bad father for Mike He, I was thinking about how many of these dramas feature evil relatives. It's extrraordinary. So a little poll. This time with checkboxes :)

[Poll #1031776]

It's a little disturbing how many options there are for absolutely miserable parents/siblings/other relatives. It's also disturbing that Shin's father in Goong (who I wanted to punch for a significant portion of the series) looks downright loving next to, say, Kurosaki's father. It makes it really hard to choose.

I wanted to kill Shin's Dad so badly, because he was such a bastard, but you are right, looking at these? Shin should send his Dad a thank you note!

Mars really has a monopoly on the whole "messed up" thing - pick a category, any category! (But I still love to hate Kaede & Kurosaki's dad, too.)

There wasn't a single normal family member in there. Even Ling's stepdad/uncle (by far the best parent of the bunch) stuck him in an insane asylum and straightjacket.

I feel a rewatch coming on.

But they should definitely adopt if they want kids.

Definitely, definitely adopt. The thought of passing on that insanity is scarier than Tong Dao - & I found him downright freaky.

I mean, the only good thing to be said for that genetic pool is that Qi Luo's stepdad was not related to her.

Re: TD. I saw the actor in a small part in another drama. He was being very normal but I freaked!

I always thought it takes a brave actor to play that kind of role - I mean, who is ever going to look at him the same again? (at least, not without tons of nice-guy roles to water down that image) I remember off the BTS special Barbie talking about after filming that scene how everyone was very quiet around her almost as if they'd really witnessed a rape - I imagine it was just as bad for him.

oh yes yes yes! rewatch! again! again!

i want to rewatch too!

btw, have you seen Vic Zhou's rather disastrous haircut lately...for delicious relationship or some such title? and he has lost an immense amount of weight! he didnt have much on him before...so he looks a bit ill now! :(

Yeah, I saw a pic, and seriously, he is not a JE boy. He needs to eat something!

P.S.

I just thought of something brilliant.

A swap between Smiling Pasta and Why Why Love.

The dad in SP only loves the acting out badboy son and is horrid to his sweet good son. And the dad in wwl likes his dutiful one and despises the acting out one.

They should swap. The Dad in SP can take Mike He in and give the Dad in WWL Nicholas Teo's character. That way one will have two troublemakers and one two responsible ones. Everyone happy and appreciated/appreciative.

From: [identity profile] ladysaotome.livejournal.com
lol! I can see the dad in WWL being happy with that arrangement but I'm not sure about the dad in SP - sooner or later he's going to have to think, "gee, having 2 badboy sons, one of whom likes joyriding on motorcycles & getting in accidents really isn't helping my public image anymore than having an idol son was..."

Hey, if he didn't think having an underground band performer, going around beating up people son was bad for image, than he can take Mike He :P

I haven't seen all of these, but of all I have, the worst is the dad in Bali. It takes a special something to beat your son to near unconscious with a golf club and then act as if nothing had happened. I am glad the secondary lead ran off with his money.

The worst step-sibling/step-mother award goes to Stairway to Heaven, though. That pair were in a class by their own and exuded evil through their very pores.

and then act as if nothing had happened.

What, you mean that doesn't happen daily in the best families?

He really was in a class of his own. (I still need to finish Bali btw, I have only three eps to go, but the prospect of so much angst is daunting).

Though the dad in Silence (most depressing drama ever) also took the evil cake.

That pair were in a class by their own and exuded evil through their very pores.

And bugged out eyes :P

I like the actress in Silence and it goes without saying that I love Vic Zhou, but I've watched so many angsty ones lately I am not sure I can take it. I should check out if it's on jdrams though. Just in case I really need to depress myself.

It's on jdramas.

autumn_yaar and myself put it up.

It's really good, but seriously, super angsty. And unlike some silly ott ones, I actually care for the characters in it, which makes it worse.

Seriously, watch The Outsiders. it's really good!

You've convinced me! Whenever I get to Canada I will try and dl it. (God knows when that will be as visa is still not in appearance). But if I end up suicidal as a result I plan on spamming your journal. :)

Mars's families just frightens me to the point of no-return. I want to see it so badly and in the same time, it's just too much. Rape? Suicidal? Insanity? What the hell? o_O

Kurosagi's story is pretty messed up too. Goong's relatives (for the royal part) are horrible. Plain and simple.

Date: 2007-08-01 11:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dangermousie.livejournal.com
Mars is really really good and is optimistic and sweet and hopeful desite it all. I can think of plenty of depressing dramas, but Mars is not one of them.

Kurosagi's Dad was incredibly horrible. And the entire royal family in Goong should have been drowned.

This makes me realize that there are surprisingly few truly terrible wuxia parents(well, Hu Ge's in Chinese Paladin and maybe Crystal Liu's father in the same...and Ady An's, to a degree...and some in The Little Fairy...hmm...only bad wuxia parents I can think of are ones that make Hu Ge angst a lot...)

good point. I tend to try to banish characters who truly raise my instinct to rabidly stab from my mind, hence my not immediately thinking of him.

well, it's all on my LJ from when I watched it, but in addition to being a truly awful father who constantly undermined his daughter's value and selfconfidence and made sure everyone thought she was a spoiled brat(in reality, she was young and hotheaded and a little impetuous, but the bulk of that, and her rebelliousness, was solely her desire to get a lil recognition from her father) He tried to force her to marry another guy when she fell for an assassin, then tried to kill them when he rescued her from the wedding, then when they escaped, he essentially declared them the enemies of him and all his allies, which was the equivalent of putting out a hit on them.

He also killed the person who loved him most, framed the lead for his crimes and his actions directly resulted in half of one of the OTPs being in a coma the tail end of the series, resulting in the other male lead to join the bad guys because they were the only ones who could save her.

Just a few highlights.

indeed, it's quite good(though, being wuxia, it does take a bit for the otps to get started)

he's the kind of truly descipable character only a good actor can play.

I mean, when at one point, you observe to yourself that the man who murdered his 9 months pregnant wife and didn't realizeth bby survived for 20 years nd thentries to convert her to evil is the better father, well...

oh my god! I've realised that 3 out of 4 answers are to do with Mars, the only one that wasnt Mars was because there wasnt a Mars choice in the category of worst drama father!

erm, i suppose it;s because these parents/relatives are entirely too real! though the father in goong really takes some beating in the rankings! can i please stab him with a fork!?

Coat the fork with a deadly virus and I am in.

Agreed re: Kira. And the end of that relationship is so sad. She knows she will never see the daughter again, and knows she failed her, but she can't make a break even then.

Rei's situation is horrible and actually less OTT than it seems at first (he is basically from a family with a history of mental illness, when you strip it from its melodrama underpinnings), but yes, less common.
